Glad you are ok Chris! I try to buy "highlighter" colored biking apparel whenever I can. I got a new bright yellow zip-sleeve lined jersey a few weeks ago that i am excited to wear when the mercury drops.

The brighter the better!

I just bough a hi-vis vest so I can throw in on over anything I own for biking and running.

I used to have this 'highlighter' jacket but I misplaced it. When I say misplaced I mean I had it on the roof of my car and drove away. Yell

OKAY WATCH OUT HERE THEY COME.......SmileSmileSmileSmileSmile Dunno why it just happened -mmm maybe coz DH and DD have gone away for a few days, I get to hang out with me and my friends and not be mummy or wifey!  I left dishes in the sink today and I don't care!

I've done no training at all since Monday!  I thought about getting up for 5.15am squad today but really it was dark and my bed was so comfortable.  I'll get back to it all tomorrow!  I can't train today - lunchtime we got a bbq at work, and tonight I'm out with my girlfriends for dinner.

Oh I seem to have signed up for something....

cdban66 - 2012-09-27 4:34 PM  OK, I was on my ride home today when it nearly happened. Let me start out by explaining that I live in a retirement area. This is where little old ladies can barely see over the steering wheel of their Lincoln Continentals. All you see is two hands on the wheel and a puff of blue hair. So I am 3 miles from home (remember that most accidents happen within 4 miles of the home) and some oncoming idiot decides to turn into his driveway. So he cuts right in front of me. Did I mention that the only color jersey I have is High Vis Yellow? At 6'3" and 215 lbs in a glowing shirt, I'm hard to not see. Oh, but due to my superior bike handling skillls (yeah, not so much), and by the Grace of God, I was able to swerve and avoid him. Less than a mile later, same thing, but this time there were more cars around. I threw my tail end off the back of the bike, squeezed the brakes, and luckily I didn't go tail over head. I actually managed to stay upright and get past her. And I didn't even curse the friggin' old bitty. Until now. The moral of the story is be alert and practice bike handling skills any chance you get. Have a safe day everyone, I'm off to scrounge up dinner!

Wow, that's scary; good thing you have such good bike handling skills and good thing you were paying attention.  I only ride outside Sunday mornings when traffic is lightest and i go to areas that have little traffic and are popular with cyclists.  Even then I am hyper alert.

ah it's only a half I'm doing a half in about 7 weeks too!  Jeez I better start doing some hours!  I'm in that strange place of not caring at all!  ho hum!

The HIM in January falls perfectly in the training plan for IM in March - it's about 9 weeks out.  Takes the pressure off performing well in the November one!

Open Water Swim Calendar is out !  Here's what I've thought about....

SAT NOV 24TH      1.5KM
SAT DEC 1ST         1KM
SAT DEC 8TH         1.2KM
SAT DEC 15TH       1.2KM - there's also a 4km....
WED DEC 26TH     1.2KM - there's also a 5km....
SAT JAN 12TH        1.2KM
SAT JAN 26TH        1.4KM
SAT FEB 23RD        3.0KM - this is at my squad training site, last year I did the 1.2km this year ...
SUN MAR 17TH       1.2KM

I figure if I do half of these in varying conditions I should get comfortable in the ocean!

TriAya - 2012-09-27 7:12 AM Well, I'm back, rather unhappy and in a bit of pain but it went better than anticipated (the internal tissue was so rotten from infection the dentist didn't have to do too much wrangling or breaking of anything to get the tooth out) but boy that smell was hideous. He let me check out the tooth and tissues that he cut away (and a bit o' bone as anticipated) and damn they were disgusting.

I wish you a speedy, painless recovery! My dental surgeon let me keep my nasty wisdom teeth when they took them out---talk about motivation to keep my teeth in good shape! The worst part was not being allowed to eat real food for 2 days! I remember watching "Bizarre Foods" thinking oooh, that looks REALLY good! "You know you are really hungry when...."

Okay, off to classes for me...

First off, that is great news about school. Phhheeeww a huge relief I am sure!

Second, hahaha about the above comment. I am probably supposed to get my wisdom teeth out but the thought of not eating real food is a HUGE deterrent.

I was supposed to get mine out when I was in high school.  Instead, I finished high school, graduated from college then law school, worked as a prosecutor then defense attorney and then general counsel for the sheriff and then had them out.  Needless to say, they weren't impacted.

Okay. Nobody hate me. This is one of the only really cool things about me: I have no wisdom teeth!! Never had them. I am an evolutionary freak of nature.

Ah, my dad has got you beat--he's had two sets!!! I know creepy....but I just had to share.

Oh the other reason for the smileys, well yes I've signed up for a HIM in January which is 9 weeks before IM - perfect timing.

BUT better than that, I had an Olympic in 5weeks and a HIM in 7 weeks, I've withdrawn entry from both.  I'm not ready I won't do it justice and I'm losing more sleep over these two events than anything I've ever done!  So I shall still go to the Olympic, it's a great location flight and accommodation already booked and paid.  The HIM I will not go, it's local so no need.

A weight has been lifted and I feel much better!  Smile Bonus smiley.

Chris, I'm so glad that you you are OK.  I try to wave at drivers (I think that their brain clicks to the "that's a human" setting) but you can't always do that.  Yesterday I was running.  It was early.  I had reflective gear on my ankle, shirt, shorts, head and a light on my head.  Did they stop at the stop sign or pull right in front of me while I was in the intersection?  Be careful out there!

Agreed, I wave to everyone, cars, trucks, other bikes, motorcycles, grannies with walkers. I don't care who it is, I'm happy they are out there and hopeful they don't run me over

One of the nice parts of my bike club was a couple of training rides that we did, we went through bike handling, stopping, clipping, unclipping, turns, water bottle retrieval, etc. I went and it was informative. I really think everyone that rides should take advantage of something like that, if it is available. And try to take a few minutes out of every ride to do more of the same, in an effort to gain more comfort and confidence on the bike. I LOVE the fact that Jo is taking the coaching to heart and pushing herself to be more comfortable on the bike. It is just so important and raises the safety aspect if you are more comfortable.

Just my 2 cents.

Alright, I am once again going to give you my weekly track practice update. It's hard to talk to anyone about this stuff because they just don't understand, so ... sorry pod, you have to listen to me.

I had a choice last night to either hang back with the group that is a little bit slower or move a group ahead (who are admittedly better runners than I.) "Well sh*t," I thought, "I don't come all the way back here to take it easy." So I joined the other group and off we went. The workout was a 3.5 mile progressive  run, going faster with each mile then  faster yet with the last .5 miles. We did:

6:46

6:38

6:30

and 3:11 for the final half

I was barely hanging on (per usual) and since I don't run with a watch I am at the other people's mercy. It was hell. Every second of it. But it's hard to explain, it was also somewhat euphoric. I know ... Undecided

After that we had to jog to "the hill" (by the way, this group doesn't jog. They run. You can't fool me.

We had to do 5 repeats at full strength, just pushing as hard as we could to the top of the hill. It was dark by now and the hill was a gravel trail that is pretty steep. Anyway, I beat the 5 ladies and one guy in our group every single repeat! Ahhh the small victories!!!!!!!!!!

Our coach said he is really happy with my progress in a short period of time BUT, (agh, the dreaded but!!!) I need to desperately work on my flexibility. Damn, busted! It's so true though.

Hooray! A triple awesome.

Did he make any suggestions about working on your flexibility? What does that mean exactly, in the context of running?

Yeah, he gave me a series of flexibility exercises to do.

In the context of running he said my inflexibility is limiting my stride. He said I am doing more work than I should and once I become more flexible I will have a little more flow. If that makes sense. He worded it really well and it's unfortunate I can't remember exactly how he said it but that is the gist.

Hmmm. Interesting. I have a short stride (that comes with short legs), but when I watch Mirinda run, I think differently. She is about the same size as I am, and she definitely does not have a short stride. And I'm not tremendously flexible.

What type of exercises, more specifically? Yoga and pilates type?
