Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Hello all, Ironman here! Made it back home safe and sound from Wisconsin! What a fantastic weekend!! Luckily, I was able to hook up with Kathleen and Carla (fantastic spectator extraordinaire)at the Athlete Dinner. My husband was in town, but busy wrangling our kids. I'll give a quick run down of the race, I'll try and do a race report later, but I'm terrible at getting them done! Race morning I woke up at 3:55, 5 minutes before the alarm. Got up, got some food, and my husband picked me up at 5 to drop of my special needs bags and get my stuff on my bike. My bike was waaay down at the end of transition, so I had to walk all the way down and all the way back. The plus side was that I only had to run a short distance with my bike and bike shoes on. I got in the water right after the pros started, and positioned myself to the left of the ski ramp. I'm a slow swimmer and wanted to avoid a lot of contact, so I was a ways back, but there were also a fair amount of people behind me. I also looked behind me to try and get in a decent spot so if those behind swam faster they would swim next to me not over me. We were off, unbelievably I actually passed some people!! I was honestly concerned I would be the last one in the water & how that would affect me mentally, having only wave starts in my HIM's and going fairly early. I received very little contact. I was so afraid of getting kicked in the head with a breaststroke kick that when I saw feet in front of me I made a note of what stroke they were swimming. This was harder on the long back part, as the chop was making it hard to sight. Sometimes people would stop completely to sight so they would kick wide. I still avoided them! I was able to follow some feet, but was always worried they weren't swimming straight, given the conditions! Took it easy and was glad to see the shore. Wanted anything under 2hrs and it was 1:53, so I was happy with the first leg! Felt good coming up the helix and into transition. Had to make a quick bathroom break and then was out on the bike. On the way out to Verona, I noticed a rattling sound. It wasn't until I was out of Verona and onto my first loop that I realized one of my aerobar armrests was loose!! I've never had a problem with it, and it was fine the day before. I was trying to rememeber exactly how it was set up without stopping. Of course, I normally carry my multipurpose tool, but I decided to put it in the bike special needs instead, since it's a little heavy. It forced me to remain aero the majority of the next 40 miles, for fear it would fall off. I thought about flagging down bike support, but honestly I didn't want to stop! I love, love this course. It is so pretty, and fun (Garfoot Road is such a blast!!) and the crowd support is fantastic. I made it to SN and fixed my armrest, which was such a relief. On the second loop I had some foot pain, and the hills were harder, but managible. I didn't want to have to walk up or stand up on any of the hills (I think there are 84 hills total), and I met that goal. The stick back to Madison was a bit windy, but I've done much worse, and I was headed back to town!! In T2, I saw Kathleen!! So happy to see her as I was thinking about her on the choppy swim, but she rocked it and was out of the water before me. The run was ok, mentally I was in a great place, but the first 5 mile I was having some issues with my feet. My goal was a 2/1 run/walk and I was able to maintain that (exception was I ran all the downhills and walked up Observatory Hill). The crowd support on State Street and most of the run was so great as were the volunteers. The first loop was done and on the the second loop. My legs were pretty sore by then and I had to slow to a 1/1 run/walk, but suprisingly my second half was only a couple minutes slower than the first. It was amazing how many people I passed by running every other minute on the second half, and I was running slow!! I took the time to make sure I was properly spaced for the finish chute, purposely walking for a couple minutes, letting two people pass that I could just tell might try and crowed the finish line. First goal was to finish, second goal was anything with a 15 at the beginning, and I knew I had beat that, so I wanted to take it all in. Ran it, high fived a ton of people, gave thanks to my Mom in heaven and finished in 15:40. The entire day I could not stop smiling!!! In all my pictures I'm smiling. It was fantastic. I was so blessed to have my husband, kids, cousins, dad, and 3 of my best girlfriends that were there cheering for me all day. I rented the MyAthleteLive tracker and I would HIGHLY recommend it. Not only was it much easier for those that were following me in person to find me on the course and know where to go, but also to those following at home. So many people said it was really exciting to follow me on the website. Plus my girlfriends did a great job posting videos and pictures (not my husbands strong suit-he had my phone all day and took 2 pictures, one before the race and one of some poodles that were shaved except for the M-Dot--but I have NO complaints, he was and is fantastic). My legs are a little sore, but not bad. Think I'll head to the pool tomorrow. Ken--online registration for IMWI doesn't open until next week, they said because of some online registation issues, which must be referring to your situation. Dwayne--so glad you had a good race. If you would have slowed down, I might have been able to say "hi"! There was food (Pizza and brats I think, but it was off to the side) I didn't see it at first, but at that point my stomach wasn't super happy, so I only had some chocolate milk and water. |

IRONMAN cluCongratulations Ali!! Great recap and it sounds like you enjoyed the experience!!! Thanks for sharing and I will look forward to your RR when you get the chance! Not sure what they expect to have fixed by next week, but maybe they will at least have a better idea of how many registrants there were on sight, which has also been an issue at times. Again, congratulations IRONMAN!!! |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Another wierd weather week, it was over 80 at 4 this morning when I got up to do my long run. I thought about moving to tomorrow, but it looks about the same temp wise with t storms. So I sucked it up and sloshed through 16 miles. Sorry that your hand is still bothering you Karen! Hopefully you can get back in the water next week! For some reason I am not getting the e-mail notices of postings like I used to. Not sure if it is a work security issue since we upgraded our servers last week, or a BT problem. Is anyone else noticing that? |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed HOORAY, Dwayne and Ali! I am so excited and happy for you both! I loved reading your race recaps and look forward to your reports when you post them. Even though it's been over 2 weeks since Louisville, I'm still on an IM high and reading about your experiences made me smile wide with appreciation for what you went through and your successes...CONGRATS! Ken, I also have not been receiving any email updates except for the last two you posted--I've been waiting for the IM Wisconsin reports from everybody, so I'm glad I came onto the site to read them after seeing that you aren't getting email updates, either. I still have not gotten back into a schedule yet--have to stay out of the pool for a little longer because of the tattoo, will bike tonight, and I did a 7 mile run Saturday morning, which was my first since the IM. I think I was more sore on Sunday from running probably too far and too fast on Saturday than I was from the IM--crazy! Though I'm probably going to do a mid-length tri in October, I am now thinking about which marathon I want to run before next April to try to qualify for Boston. Have any of you done a marathon in Florida/Georgia/South Carolina that is fairly flat and well organized? I could probably do a late November/early December one, or anything in February and March. Suggestions? Happy training all! |

Suggestions? Happy training all! Must have been a BT thing since I received the e-mail on your post Becky. Glad to hear you are getting back into some training again, IM does take a lot out of you, both physically and mentally and sometimes the return to training is more of a mental block! The only marathon in FL that I have done that is flat and well organized came at the end of a 2.4 mile swim and 112 mile bike! Disney is flat, but it is definately not a PR race due to crowd size. I read about an interesting new marathon (maybe not new, but changed) over at Cape Canaveral, or in that area. Each year starting in 2014 the medal would honor a different space shuttle and if you did 5 years or 7 years or something like that there were special medals or awards. I beleive it was in February. |

Life and training became a little more complicated this week as my wife is out of town till Friday. that means that I have to take care of the boys 24 hours of the day. Fortunately I have made it to the pool yesterday and today which I needed badly to get some time in. As I mentioned before, soccer for my oldest started, but I did get an 11 mile run on Saturday and over 60 on the bike on Sunday so not much lost for the week. This weekend (if I can get permission from the wife) I am going to try a long swim Saturday of two miles after soccer and then 80 miles on the bike on Sunday followed by a 6 mile run. Sunday will be my first race rehearsal where I will test the bike/clothing/nutrition etc... I will do another one three weeks before the race.. Time is flying by.... |

I am hoping to get a 2 1/2 hour run on Saturday morning before we head to the football game and a 5 1/2 hour ride on Sunday hopefully followed by a couple mile run. No swimming for me yet. I thought I would post a picture of my lovely hand so everyone can understand what a true clutz I am! Like I said, swimming is probably out for a bit yet, riding in aero is do-able but out of the bars is a bit of a challenge! (hand.jpg) Attachments ---------------- hand.jpg (3KB - 17 downloads) |

Race plan went off without a hitch other than I forgot my usual nutrition on the bike. Luckily the back up worked just fine. Great venue. Definitely going to do it again sometime, but need a one year break. (you people who do them every year are animals!). I'll hopefully get a race report up sometime, but feeling really lazy now. - Todd |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Got up to do my longest workout ever (3.5 hour ride and 45 min run) to find pouring rain. Super unusual here, so I didn't know what to do. But I'm also working a ton for the next 2 weeks and have an Oly race coming up after that so I had to get it done today. So I got on the trainer. 1 hour watching TV. 1 hour doing intervals with Sufferfest. Outside to check weather. Rain has slowed down a bit. Decided I could get an hour done on the bike trail by my house (New Mexicans do NOT know how to drive in the rain, so no way I was headed out into traffic). Did an hour at race pace and felt pretty darn good. Was going to call it close enough, but decided to just get the whole damn thing done and finished the last 30 minutes. Then headed out on my run. Maybe it was the fact that I wasn't hot for the first time in months, but I felt awesome. I've been eating since I got home but super happy I got this workout done. It was much more difficult mentally than it was physically, which I suspect was an important lesson. Also, my nutrition seems to be working well. Austin, here I come! (I realize how weenie my workout must seem to all of you IRONMEN AND WOMEN but please know how much I am inspired by you!) Jaime |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Congrats Todd! Really awesome, you are an Ironman! And I agree about needing at least a year in between--I can't imagine committing to IM training year after year--or doing more than one in a year, Ken! Though that might be easier on the training schedule. Looking forward to hearing more about your race, Todd. Jaime, that is not a weenie workout! Well done! Especially since you still got it done with poor conditions, that's really awesome, congrats! Heading to a Depeche Mode concert tonight! Hopefully I can still get myself out of bed tomorrow to run in the morning. Have a great weekend all! |

Jamie - great workout - no weenie workout at all -- it's really rewarding when you break through to longer and longer workouts. 4 years ago 4.5 miles was my long run and I would think I was world's best runner for doing that. Good luck to all racing this weekend. Off to the shore for surf camp with my daughter - I'm bringing my wetsuit! 92 derees here on Wed - today high of 68! |

Member 326 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Hello everyone, I made it back from Wisconsin safe and sound. I had planned on going to Wisconsin Dells after the IMWI race and relaxing. But, most things were closed as of the Labour Day weekend. None of the outdoor parks were open. I spent a day at Kalahari (indoor water park) but they only had 5 slides for singles and the lazy river was partially closed. I wanted to spend a night in Chula Vista, but their indoor water park was closed for cleaning. I spent some time in Wisconsin Dells (the town) and every second store was closed. So, I played 2 rounds of golf, at Chula Vista and Trappers Turn, then headed to Minneapolis. I took in a Twins game, went to the Mall of America and then the outlet malls. I unpacked, washed all my race gear and took my bike into the LBS for a complete end of season overhaul. Monday I am right back into training. Mon/Wed/Fri is masters swim, Tues/Thurs is bike to work. I have a half marathon on October 9th. I am trying go sub 1:30 in that race. I have signed up for the Fargo Marathon on May 9th, 2014. I am going to try and Boston Qualify in that race (sub 3:25). I have also signed up for Ironman Whistler on July 27th, 2014. I was waiting to finish IMWI before I signed up for any new races for next year. I originally wanted to do Mont Tremblant but it was sold out, as well as Chattanooga so I decided on Whistler. I am going to Volunteer for Chattanooga next year and try and register for 2015 then. I am moving up an age category next year. I am going from 40-44 to 45-49. I really enjoy the training and I am in the best shape of my life. I am a single guy, no kids, so I have plenty of free time. If I wasn't training I probably would be watching TV or playing my PS3. I have season ticket for the Winnipeg Jets and the pre-season first home game is tonight. I am really hopeful that they have the pieces together for a strong and successful team. I haven't done anything training wise in a week. I am getting antsy. My coach says for the next couple of months do stuff because you want to, not because you have to. Switch things up. Play hockey, do some strength training, just go for a ride, take the dog for a walk. This is the rest and recharge time. Yes, I am going to be one of those guys who do one IM a year. I was so impressed with the race and how much fun I had that I want to do one of these every year. I am going to do a different one each year. Travel to all these great locations and have fun. I was impressed with the thousands of volunteers and I want to give back as well so I am going to race once per year and volunteer once per year. I want to thank everyone for the warm congratulations. This was a great mentor program forum. Hopefully if/when Kenj opens another forum for next year I will be back. Congratulations to all those who raced this season and achieved dreams and goals. Dwayne |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I had a hard bike effort this morning I did on the trainer. 2.5 hours at 220 watts to start not allowing it to drop below 200. I wound up at 198 dripping wet. On a plane now heading to Minneapolis for a couple days, I love airplane internet! |

Veteran 385 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Well, my weekend of training did not go as planned, but all is not lost.. It started Saturday morning when we found out we had family in town and that means lots of family events. so After my son's soccer game I had planned on swimming 2 miles. We were meeting for lunch so I had to cut it back to 1.5 mile which was not bad. Saturday night we had them over for dinner which meant beer and steak. I did however cook a bit of pasta on the side just to get some carbs in my body. Sunday morning is where everything went south to a point. I had a limited time and planned an 80 mile bike ride followed by 6 mile run but we had a birthday party at 1:00 PM which meant time was at a premium. Woke up and headed out but when I got about 4 miles from home, I had a blow out. I changed the tube and put it back together and the new tube blew before I got on the bike. Looked closer and realized that my tire had a blown as well... Fortunately I carry two spare tubes and changed the tube and used a dollar bill to prevent the tube from blowing out again. I rode back home and changed the tire and got some spare tubes and hit the road. Rode out and believe it or not got another flat at around 50 miles. I changed it and continued on my way home. I made it back home from the ride at 1:30 so I had to scratch the run and meet the family at the party. I got my 80 miles in and felt like I have a good feel for pacing on the bike etc and had not issues with what I took in as far as nutrition. I also felt like I could run the six miles after I got off the bike. This is different for me because when I did the half last year, I got off the bike and I was cramping and had no clue if i could walk a mile much less run 13. All in all not a lost weekend but as I keep saying, I have to be a dad and husband first. Run my business and then do what I can with what time I have left. 6 weeks to go.............. |

Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Nice job this weekend everyone! I'm just getting back from vacation. We were in Vegas for a week. I helped my wifes aunt purchase a new car, did some gambling, ate at some good resteraunts, and drove an Audi R8 for some laps around LV Motor Speedway. Had a good time! Rained a lot so didn't sit by the pool too much. Unfortunately, I got sick the last few days so that was dissapointing. But it was still relaxing and much needed. Spending a couple days getting better and then I'm focussing on next season. My coach and I already started talking about what races and mapping out a plan. Might as well, since this year was a wash out. I still haven't run, so I'm hoping my PF will cooperate with me next year. Fingers Crossed! |

Veteran 536 Long Island, NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Congratulation to all you ironman finishers - simply amazing! I have my HIM in 2 weeks and I wanted some advice on tapering. I've learned a lot in the past few years about how to taper but I've been reading Joel Friel's book the triathletes bible and he mentioned feeling flat the day of your race. I know a long tape is not good I learned that during my marathon training last year. I also felt a little flat before my HIM at the end of last year. I plan on doing some extra swims this taper. Last year I think my swim fitness dropped a bit during my taper. I don't plan on doing any long runs or bike ride but I have few bricks scheduled. Anything specific that you can recommend to me?
