Anyone know a good sports psychology book?

I was listening to a podcast while running over the weekend and it talked about the internal governor we have in our brains that limits how fast we can go.

I have thought for awhile now that mine is set pretty low, I joke that my body has a serious self preservation thing going on and has me shut it down way too soon.

Seems kind of silly but just something I wanted to check out.

Good cyclists always talk about the ability to shut out the suffering and just keep pedaling, lol I have none of that, my mind always beats my body when it comes to arguing about pain and suffering...

Suzy recommended "Running Within" and I read it before my marathon last year.  It was an excellent read then just for pre race mental toughness, but I have referred to it many times this year and highly recommend it.

It is a very small paperback with lots of good information.  For me, I really had to embrace the positive mental attitude.  Self doubt can really affect our performance negatively.  That sounds so simple, but for me, it is years of self doubt to erase.   In fact, with the HM coming up this weekend, I guess it's a good time to revisit!

tahrens - 2010-11-29 9:49 AM Okay Canadian brothers, a little help please.  All the 2011 IM Canada racers recieved this email over the weekend, and I hear it is causing quite a controversy.    I admit I need to reread my receipt and see if I was charged tax or what the details are, but is it even legal to collect back taxes on a sale?  And when I tried to pull up my registration from Active I was told I am not authorized to view my registration.  WTH?  With this additional tax this race has cost me over $800 just for registration!!! I was wondering if anyone knows anything more.  I hear there is a big discussion on ST about it.  Off to look.

Dear Subaru Ironman Canada Entrant,

As many of you may be aware, effective July 1, 2010 British Columbia moved to a harmonized provincial and federal sales tax at a combined rate of 12%.  This has been a controversial and confusing tax change but it is the law and therefore must be collected on all sale of goods and services.  Unfortunately when your entry to the 2011 Subaru Ironman Canada was processed through Active, HST was not collected on the entry fee.  This has recently been brought to our attention and we are obligated to collect that tax.

To that end, the credit card that you used to enter the race will be charged $69, the amount of the HST on the entry fee.............

Hey Sugar.. Trevor is right about BC. We had the same thing happen in Ontario. (D@%! harmonized tax. Not only did they put the provincial and national sales tax together they are also collecting on more items now so it is costing us more overall.) As long as they had the sales tax in place at the time of registration they (govt and ironman)  can legally collect it. Lot of money involved here as John said. It was perhaps a little harsh but maybe the best way to circumvent the controversy before collecting the tax. That amount is certainly not going to stop anyone from racing. Especially not you Sugar. Not when you look at the overall cost up to and including the race.

I loved Running Within and it gave me what I needed to be a mentally strong runner.  I now have one that set my mind straight for IM training.  It' called Training and Talent are Overrated by Liam Stryker.  It comes with a supplement called 3 painless ways to increase pain tolerance.  I read key excerpts before every race and built mantras from it.  Some think it's corny, I think it makes me more bulletproof.

Thanks Suzy, I picked up Running Within on my way home, I'll check out the other.

LOL, I wish HTFU was all I needed sometimes.  My brain is too smart (or stupid depending on how you look at it) and ignores HTFU.

We've had this discussion before, but I think it's worth repeating.  HTFU is a ridiculous, negative phrase!   It doesn't give you any tools to call upon when you are really hurting.  Next time you are doing a 10K at above LT the whole way say it and see where it takes you.  Or read a book or talk to a strong mentally tough athlete and ask him/her how they do it.....until you've tried it you'll never know it's power.

I think HTFU is valid sometimes.  (and I know Barry was just joking)

When you roll over at 5:00am to hit snooze or turn the alarm off because you don't want to get out of bed because it's cold you need to HTFU.

Me not wanting to do the 5k in the cold rain on Thanskgiving was a HTFU moment.

I agree thought when you're in Z 4/5a on a run and needing to push through it HTFU doesn't quite work (not for me anyways, might work for some)

I seriously have conversations with myself when things get tough in races asking why the heck am I working this hard and I never have any good reasons other than wanting good results, I need to come up with something to help that.

I need a giant-sized dose of HTFU today!!!!!!!!!!! Pouring rain and I need to go and run. Some days this doesn't bother me. Today it does. I just want to hibernate. Oh, I'll get out and do it, but I'm going to dread it and dread it and dread it and whine a bit about it before it's done!! (WHINE WHINE WHINE WHINE... see? Feeling sorry for me yet?? Whimper whimper.)

I agree that having some mantras can really help. I'm gonna check out those books -- thanks for the recs!!

I wonder if he did a limited print run--it literally is this spiral bound huge print thing?  the most important book is the training and talent anyway.

Swimming people, how can I eliminate cross over?  I've been working on it since i started this master's class and apparently it isn't any better.  I feel like I am reaching very wide.  It happens to my left hand--I'm a right sided breather.

Oh and today is "post the stats" day.....so when done, DO IT!

PS. Kyla, I'm not going to tell you to HTFU, but it is only rain and if you need to run, you need to run, right?  I mean you could go on the TM as a last resort, but barring a tornado I don't know why you would! And conider running a gift.  There are at least two people in this group right now who can't run!

A coach that Sam and I used before our Tri-coach was featured in  USMS (the magazine they send you when you join US Masters) talking about the technique she used with both Sam and I, it's pretty simple.

Get a 12 inch piece of pvc and do catchup drill with it, it worked pretty well for me.  Just hold on to each side of the pipe and always return your hand to the same spot after your pull.

Also she had me focus on doing my drills much slower and for things like plain catchup drill, look at my hands after the enter the water, where are they?  If you sink when going that slow, wear fins, they'll give you enough propulsion so you don't sink and can focus on the drill instead of staying afloat.
