Veteran 593 Mandeville | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'd also practise changing the inner tube if you do get race wheels, it's a bit more fiddly with the valve extenders than a normal wheel. Good point. If you do borrow some race wheels, make sure you get new spares and have your LBS put valve extenders on before hand. They use some teflon tape an make it to where on race day, you don't have to worry about it if you flat. |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Thanks for all the feedback on race wheels. Guess I need to do some calling and some visiting the LBS to see what I can find out. As far as practicing the changing of the tube - I need to do that anyway. I'm thinking one day I'll just sit there for a couple of hours and change tubes/tires over and over and over again. |

14 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread On a bike related theme, can anyone advise how good Southwest Airlines are at baggage handling and whether there will be a problem bringing a large bike box on the flight? I've checked their baggage policy and it seems OK, subject to a fee, but some of our UK low cost airlines can be a nightmare if you try and bring some outsize luggage, even if it's booked in advance. I'm flying BA from London to Orlando, overnight stay in Orlando then out from there to Panama City Beach the following morning. Any insight appreciated |

Any insight appreciated About 2 weeks ago I flew SW orlando to Providence and traveled with my bike. It was $50 each way and they didn't bat an eye. Not sure what they will do on the UK end tho. I did put a note in the bike case stating that this is a $6500 worth of bike and if the frame is scratched the bike will be compromised and if they have any trouble re-packing or any questions to call on my cell phone and left the number in the case. It was inspected both ways but I think they just swabbed it to test for chemicals and closed it up as it was not disturbed. I wrap my frame with ace bandages to protect it when I pack it. I really didn't have any issues but it might be a good idea to call the SW terminal at your departure airport to ask ahead of time. I would suggest getting to the airport with a little extra cushion of time. FYI having traveled to europe a few months ago my cell would not work over there so yours may not work here. CHeck with your carrier. Here its easy and inexpensive to pick up a throw away cell phone to use during your stay for porbab;y around $40. Rural france not so much. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread its all about the bike dkrrt. and the run (and the swim to a lesser degree). the thing is you need to have as strong bike (engine) as possible, even if you have to keep it toned down a bit for a better run. its really a highly individualistic algebraic equation for each of us. but don't undersell the bike (and the equipment) or any one sport. |

I thought about a yellow shirt. Blue and red print on the front and black and red on the back. I'd change the date on the back of course. I'd love to have a shirt and don't mind recycling ideas. I love the new front. I know color choices for tech shirts are limited, but I'd be ok with yellow. Just NO orange like last year, please. |

Last few ones I hated being on my bike towards end of ride as fit was off and it was miserable. Change in stem and more time riding in position made the difference. Watts were even so I had very steady effort. Felt I could ride as long as I needed to just keep giving me fluid, electrolytes and calories. Plus after the ride I feel great not zonked or so out of it my kids wonder why I can't communicate. Just over 6 hours and 93.7 miles with 2990 feet of climbing. |

Does this mean you are going to do the modification/ordering, or do you want help coordinating? Since you all are racing this one, and I am a lowly volunteer, I would be willing to get the counts and sizes together, collect, etc... Let me know - happy to help. |

Just let me know where to send the check :-) Same here! OK, let's just get this started... we will need quantity and shirt size, regardless of whether I order or JCC does it. email me: [email protected] those requirements. Assume shirts for participants AND supporters, cuz they are a big part of the reason you are going to begin with. I guess once we have an idea of how many, we can get pricing... by then we will know where you need to send the $$, and the coordination of delivery will follow. If JCC does the ordering, I will pass this on to him. I would expect we need to order pretty quickly, so let's say get this part done in the next week max. |

Regular 408 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I flew SW to NOLA HIM in the spring. I checked my bike in outside and gave the guy a $20 tip and he did not charge me anything for my bike. I have a ton of FF miles on AA but with the charge for bikes it just made more sense for me to pay and fly SW. I have not had any problems with SW handling my bike. I to have a nice hard case I pack it into. I have actually have just been considering driving to IMFL instead of flying. |

Regular 408 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I have always raced without socks. Never been a problem even when I sweat a lot. This spring I was racing an HIM and the dumping of the water over my head at the aid station and just water everyplace at the aid station soaked my shoes. For the first time I got a bad blister. |
