OK serious equipment question. I hate goggles I have not found a pair that I like, and get overwhelmed looking at all the choices. I plan on buying a couple different pairs and styles....need recommendations....manufacturers? Models?

FWIW, I had the same problem until I tried the Aquasphere Cayenne.  I have found that those fit well on me, provide excellent field of vision in the water, and -- apart from making me look like Kurt Rambis -- are exactly what I need in goggles.  I tried them because I went into Paragon Sports (I think) when I was in NYC and did not have my old goggles with me on that trip, and Paragon had one of each type/brand of goggles out of the box for customers to check out.  I tried the fit by pressing the goggles against my face without using the strap behind.  Because the Aquasphere Cayenne stuck on my face without falling off, I believed it was the right fit and got a pair.  I have not been disappointed.

(I will rely on John to: a) provide a link to the cayenne; and b) to provide a picture of Kurt Rambis.)

I had no idea who you were talking about, but i got him now.

typical canadian, doesn't know who kurt rambis is.  and probably the two celtics behind him i s'pose as well.      short shorts. ha!

Bird and McHale

BTW:  Ran the Boston marathon a couple weeks ago (as a bandit) and there was a guy near me who ran in Bird's #33 Celtics uniform and was getting loud cheers of support all along the course.  Amazing how much Bird is loved in beantown even after all these years.

Quick question, can you race Tri's wearing calve sleeves? I am asking becuase I know they mark you legs so I was wondering about it. Reason asking is stupid stupid stupid stupid me ran 3.5 miles in Vibrams and the next morning did a brick where I decided to push myself to try and find my limit for racing and now my right calf is super tight and sore so I was going to purchase a pair of sleeves for future training and racing.

On another note, does anyone actually use these and what are your thoughts?

Like FattylessFatty said, I DID wear calf socks (not sleeves) for long distance racing--HIM to IM.  I felt they kept my circulation going and lessened calf tightness.  You can definitely wear them.  For Sprints and Oly's I did wear the sleeves and put them on under my wetsuit.  Getting them on when wet is a pain.   I have no idea whether or not they really helped or the placebo effect was in full force.  For whatever reason, I stopped wearing them over the winter.  I don't plan to use them at REV and will see how things feel afterwards.

PS.  I don't like the sleeves.  They are tighter at the bottom right where your AT sits and putting extra pressure on those makes no sense to me....at least mine are too sensitive to mess with.

We're lucky to have any formal swim practices. Lonestar didn't have one, Racine didn't have one and you already know IM WI doesn't have them anymore....my guess is you can plop yourself in the water at any time....that's what we did last year.

No whining...this is supposed to be FUN!

Goggles I think tend to be a personal preference, I did not have good luck with the cayenne's, so you might have to do some trial and error on finding ones that fit you correctly.

agree on tony and toby's post.  its personal and i wear aquashere.

here they are in pink!!!  plenty of lens colors to choose from, just like the other brands

I LOVE the Kayanne's (with a K!).  My only gripe is the seals do not seem to last very long for me.  I used to wear the Blue Seventy Visions and thought those were the bomb until they came out with the hydro upgrade.  Now they don't fit my face....

Yep.  Ran Boston as a bandit.  I did not highlight it here because I felt like it should be Linda's day (and the other folks who actually qualified).  Great race.  Beautiful day, and I loved the 15-20mph tailwind.  Loved running past Wellesley College, and was tempted to circle back so I could run past it again.  Newton hills were a killer, but the crowds were fantastic.

I can't remember when it was last year, they actually had a pro doing a clinic before it started.

If they do it at the same location as last year it should be helpful.  You got in and out at the swim finish so you could see how it worked to have to pull yourself up on the dock.  Not sure if they put in a ladder or anything this year but it was a bit awkward.

If anyone is interested I plan on riding the Oly course on Saturday sometime.

As far as the relay went they could never find someone to do the bike portion so Sam's just going to be kid entertaining.

Wow you don't have to be away from this group long to have the conversation turn to butts, boobs and BS.....LOVE IT !!!!

I own a sleeveless wetsuit and like the fact that it does not restrict my arms, however there is an OWS this weekend and there is NO WAY I am getting in that water....hovering around 58-60 (just found out official temp 51 - NFW!). If there is one thing I hate it is cold water...yes I am a wimp....

No race this weekend although I was thinking about a trail race...too much going on....get to sing in the choir for first communion on Saturday morning and then Mothers day on Sunday...I guess I have to do something for my wife right? Although she is not my mother...that should be my kids job? Is it possible to count on 20 year old's to do something for their mother? Probably should not hold my breath......

OK serious equipment question. I hate goggles I have not found a pair that I like, and get overwhelmed looking at all the choices. I plan on buying a couple different pairs and styles....need recommendations....manufacturers? Models?

Haha Bruce,  told you we would fit right in!!!

You're right, your wife's not your mom, so sit back and let your young-adult kids take care of it.  Then, make sure you let us all know how that works out for ya!  Wink

Okay, since Suzy did not mention it, I will!  Don't overdo it in those five fingers!!!  Please take it slow, even 3.5 miles on the first run is alot.

Even if you already are a mid to fore foot striker, there is definitely a break in period when changing to a minimalist shoe and you can seriously injure yourself by doing too much or too fast, too soon.  You can read all about that in the Runners World injury forum.

I spent almost a whole year changing my foot strike from a heel strike (with a history of plantar fasciitis) to a mid foot, and last year after my last race, I was ready for the new shoes.  I run in Saucony Kinvaras.  I was really careful to stop at the first sign of calf tightness or soreness.  My first three to four weeks were 30 minute short easy runs with walk breaks.  No calf tightness or soreness afterwards because while running I always stopped at the first sign of ANYthing out of the ordinary.  I am happy to report that they do a great job and my legs, heels, ankles and feet feel great even after long runs and racing.

I also have the calf sleeves and much prefer the calf socks.  There seemed to be lots of pressure at the cuff and my ankles would get really swollen with the sleeves...not very pretty and not very comfortable.  I use them only for recovery, when I tried to run in the socks, my legs would get too hot and feel like little tree trunks.  weird!

Funny.  I was going to scold on the five fingers and didn't.  Glad you did.  There is a kid (20ish) who works at the tri store here....he is a big runner and a really good triathlete.  I was having a conversation about the 5 fingers.  I asked him how much he runs in them....his comment, oh about 9.  I said 9 miles?  He laughed....he said 9 minutes.  He uses them to help with the foot position and that's it.  They've seen a lot of injuries with folks taking the plunge.

I'll never go there....but that's just me!

With size 12.5 to 13 feet that are totally flat, and I mean no arch whatsoever, I can not even dream of using a minimalist shoe. Not even the cool racing shoes! OK self pityis over.

Hi Grapejuice!

If you wear the Vibrams you gotta transition slowly.  Why did you choose them, just curious if you were having problems with regular runninng shoes? Be careful!

Thanks for the advice, I will give them a try

P.S. Even though you didnt mention it I will try harder not to over do it in training Embarassed

I have calf sleeves that I wear for recovery, but as others have said, I don't like to run in them. Feels weird. What's going on with your calf? Is it just tightness, or do you think you might have pulled something?
