Fred D - 2012-02-09 10:35 AM Ok, got my second workout in (morning off work). 2x20' hill climbs on Luz ardiden ERG video. Good challenge with me hitting 97-99% FTP for te two. These climbs are different than steady state 20' efforts as there are efforts above 120% and then down to 85% as well depending on where they are in the climb.

IMO these are much tougher than just riding steady at 95-100% FTP.  The sufferfest videos have those jumps to 120% as well and they are always tough to recover from...if you can recover!

This morning I ran 6 miles with 2 at tempo.  Did the tempo portion by RPE and was happy with the end result paces which is always good.

I swam 2k at noon and feel like I am pretty close fitness wise to where I left off last year.  This is good considering I have only been swimming once a week since October.  Only recently have I added a second swim workout.  Hopefully I can make some improvements from here by adding a 3rd session.

How do you structure your swim workouts each week?  Does it change as you get closer to your target race?  I typically have a longer distance set (3x300 w/ :30RI) and a shorter distance set (10x100 w/ :15RI) at my best average pace that I usually do each week.  Think I should modify this at all or do you think those are good staple workouts?  There will be some variation in there but the general theme is longer distance vs. shorter distance interval.  Thanks Fish!

I'm not a fish. However, if swimming 3x a week I would do one session with a focus on shorter faster efforts, one effort longer and the 3rd perhaps a combination. Truthfully I swim for recovery a fair amount which is slow and eas but I can't run everyday, my body says no.

That is exactly how my plan lays out from MOA.  There is some speed work in the longer day as well, but it is a combo of speed/easy on some sorter sets after I have already swam a pile of longer sets.

Fred D - 2012-02-09 2:46 PM Again I don't even have a plan when I arrive at the pool beyond 'swim' lol

I jus do what the (triathlete) masters coach put on the board.  He usually tailors it to upcoming races either he or I or both are doing

I'm surprised to hear that' actually. I think that's a mistake. You should get the Bernhardt book at the very least and use that to create a swim plan with planned workouts which compliment one another. Just doing whatever isn't really that effective. You need to do things you don't like doing more then the things you do. We tend to avoid workouts in the pool we don't like and usually those are the ones we should be doing.

Taking a day off from swimming to rest the shoulder.  That gives me until Monday so that should be a good chance for it to heal up.  Have an interval day on the bike.  I have a friend in town so taking the day off work and I think we are going to hike later.

Today is a sad day though.  I am putting down my cat this morning.  I know it is the right thing to do but doesn't lesson the pain any.  I've got many fond memories though.  Like when she goes after the dogs when they are fighting.  Funniest thing.  Two 70+ pound dogs going at it and in comes the cat to break it up.

Fred D - 2012-02-10 6:09 AM Woke up exhausted and have decided to definitely take a rest day. What's on for the group today? Would like to hear from everyone

Nothing?

Between the marathon two weeks ago and my boyfriend moving across the country in three weeks, my motivation is pretty low. Mental recovery seems to take me a little longer than physical recovery. I do intend on moving to Tucson as well, but I need to secure a job first, so I'm not sure how long that will take.

I've decided that this Monday is the return to a somewhat normal training schedule, though! Early mornings, here I come!

Yesterday I took an extra day off trying to give the knee a rest. I'll be hitting the trainer tonight.

When was the last time you had a bike fitting session? I have one scheduled this coming Tuesday and really looking forward to the whole works. I am heading to see Rob at http://www.orangestreetvelo.com/.

My last bike fit was early winter 10'. I should do one before I start ridding my TT bike. The last time I rode that bike was fall 10'. I've always been curious about the FIT. I guess this may be a good opportunity to try it.

Got fit by a friend who rides a lot. I'm planning on getting fit when I get a new ride. Rev3 announced one bike sponsor (Argon18) but they are pricey and our athlete discount isn't huge. But, there is a chance that we will have an additional bike sponsor. So, I'm waiting....

This morning I had a fun 2x18' @ 94-100% on the bike and this evening has another short run.

The last time I had a fitting was 2 years ago when I purchased my bike.  I would definitely love to get another fitting I just wish it was not so expensive.  It is probably a small price to pay considering al the time I spend on my bike but still hard to justify that to the other half.  Also, there is nobody that I trust locally so I would need to drive 1.5 hours or more to get to a good shop.

I took the morning off to get some much needed rest.  I am planning to ride an hour at lunch - likely 6x4 intervals @105%.

When was the last time you had a bike fitting session?

I last had a fitting about 6 months ago (about a month after buying my Tri bike). Even though I'd only had the bike a month I immediately noticed the benefit.
