acv - 2012-08-21 10:40 AMSo whats your nutrition plan advice for a half iron man?
I've only done one, but the nutrition worked out pretty well. PB and J and some sugary sancks for breakfast and a gatorade before the race.

During the bike, every half hour, I take a couple of squirts (about 125 calories) of my home made GU. I carry it in a 8oz soft-flask and only drink water (2 bottles, a 20oz aerodrink and one on the downtube for filling/exchanging). The liquid nutrition seems complicated to me and the packaged nutrition seems expensive to use for all the hours of training we put in. On the run, its one shot of whatever they are handing out per half hour. I messed this up on the last race and ate too much at the beginning of the run and paid for it a little.

GU MIXTURE

Just under 1 cup honey

1/4 tsp salt

2 salt stick capsules, emptied (to get a mix of electrolytes)

1 heaping tsp instant coffee

About 2 tbs choclate syrup

Put the dry ingredients in a bowl, stir with just enough hot water to dissolve, add honey and hersheys, mix, and go train (makes 8oz)...

Bill,

That's a pretty cool recipe!

That sort of reminds of my staple backpacking high energy homemade mixture. Replace the instant coffee and salt tabs w/ peanut butter and spread it on a bagel - you can hike a loooong time with energy to spare.....

I can't offer a lot of advice on the nutrition plan, the only time I tried to control it was IMFL by using Infinit.  It worked out pretty good using a custom formula and having the bottles pre-made, but the logistics was somewhat of an aggravation.  I have gone to researching what is served on the course and training with it.

I will set a timer on the Garmin, especially on cooler days, that goes off every 15 minutes to remind me to drink the energy drink and every other alert I will take a gel or occasionally a bar.  I am fortunate that I have an iron stomach for the most part so I don't have a lot of issues with GI issues during events.

I think a key part to any nutrition plan is to have flexibility.  Temperature, effort, and race day stress are all tough to predict and train in.  If the nutrition plan is not working you need to be flexible enough to adapt mid race and adjust which for longer races makes it nice since there are usually choices at the aid stations.

It has been one year since my PF reared its ugly head - as of now it is mostly gone - just some stiffness and tenderness of the heal. Which is great.

HOWEVER - I have been dealing with increasing pain on the outside of the same foot (5th metatarsal?) and top of my ankle, bottom of the tibia.  I think I may have a stress fracture - anyone had one?  I have been in denial over it for a few weeks, but thinks its time I made an appt. for an xray. sigh.

I was making such good progress on my running - I hope it is nothing.

Robin,

Ugg can't believe you are having pain on the outside of that foot. I have no idea what it could be but do you think it's related to all stuff you went through with the PF? I wonder sometimes if our bodies over compensate for an injury and then the muscles get thrown off balance and when we return  to being active then we notice it.

Robin,

I had a stress fracture training for my first marathon a couple years ago.  I actually ran through it and still did the race.  Surprise.......right! Sealed  Anyway, having both PF and stress frature, I'd rather have the stress fracture.  Give it a couple weeks off and start back slow.  That should fix it.  If it doesn't, it's time to see the doc.

I hope it is nothing too!  Your progress has been good and I hope you can continue.  Maybe a day or 2 with some icing as well?

Yeah I do think the pain is somehow related to the PF.  Even though I did PT to strengthen the foot and started back running really slowly, the time in the walking boot and my limping to keep off the heal may have weakened the foot too much or overstressed other areas.

Made an appt. to see a new ortho (didn't like the last guy), but it isn't for a few weeks. I figure I can always cancel if it gets better.

Anyone racing this weekend?   TGIF!!!!

I've been talking to a coach recently.  I'm going to sit down with him in the next week or two.  I dont really want to spend the $$, but it may be the wiser thing to do.  Even if that means I don't get a new road bike in the spring.  I need to get something going.  These injuries, and this years dissapointments have taken a HUGE mental toll on me.  I'm finding it VERY hard to get motivated to do anything.  I've been sitting around gaining weight since HIM.  If I don't get something going soon I'm concerned I'll give this whole thing up, and go back to getting fat and playing xbox.  I don't want that!

I think my wife may be dealing with a stress fracture right now.  It hasn't kept her from running, but it's hurting.  Keep us posted.  I certainly hope that yours is nothing and will stop hurting soon.

Doing a 50 miler or so tomorrow and that's another checklist off my Cycling bucket list. Finally someplace I never been because of the hard climb!  Did 92 mi of cycling this week, and with the 50, it'll bring it up to 142 miles THEN I may throw in another 40 miler on Sunday. Will have to see how I feel because the ride that some of my friends doing is a little bit on the hilly side, and I rather take that day as a true recovery ride.

Today - my legs finally started to feel the fatigue of the rides. Nothing I can't handle, but I was a little bit sluggish today.

This weekend has been cool to Vegas standards because of the recent downpour/flash floods we got. However, that means some of the roads are a bit rough with gravel and dirt. Something we have to deal with.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I got out to CA and it is kind of nice weather wise.  Not too hot and sunny although for the first hour or so of my run this morning it was quite foggy.  16 miles this morning building for the marathon, not quite at the level my plan is calling for but I got a late start on it and am just using it as a guide at this point.

I hope everyone else is having a great weekend too!

Had a pretty good week of training considering I was on vacation in Cancun until late Saturday night.  This was our first trip together (1) without the kidlets and (2) while I was doing any tri training with any kind of volume.  One thing I have to to remember about training is to always switch to a run-focused week while traveling.  Its the only sport I can count on getting in.  I tried one session on a spin trainer in the hotel's under-airconditioned gym and decided that wasn't for me.  So I skipped a couple of a bikes until I got home but got my runs in some pretty challenging conditions.  Also only got in one real swim.  I didn't count on how rough the sea would be in August where we were staying...

Now back to real life.  No more bloody Mary's for recovery drinks :-)

Adam, glad to hear about the PR.  Looking forward to the RR.

Ken- have a great trip and keep cranking out those running miles.

Adam....congrats on the PR!

Lets see.......I rounded up 4 animals.  Took one to stay with the vet, because she's still not doing so good.  Took one to stay with a friend, and the two dogs to the Petsmart hotel to stay the night and get grooming.  (Funny!  doesn't my wife own a pet sitting busines!! LOL)  Then packed up all my wifes things and drove into the city.  Stayed downtow at the Hilton.  I was woke up at 3:30am, because my wife was afraid to pump air in her own tires.  Back to sleep while she went down to rack her bike in transition.  Woke up again at 5am when she came back.  Slept till 7 and then packed a back pack to go down and watch the start.  Got said back pack loaded up with all of Anne's stuff she needed me to hold.  I watched the swim and sweat my but off!!  Then the rains came in and sat in the rain the rest of the day!  then packed up all my wifes things and drove back home and then back out to round up all the animals......FUN!

wife PR'd in her second ever Olympic!

Training is going well for the half IM on 9/23 in Branson.  Going to IM Moo on 9/9 to volunteer, then signing up.  Still trying to unravel the coaching situation.  All good.  Strong and light.
