Dream Chaser - 2011-05-17 3:18 PM I remember a sentence from Kathy G's blog when she was in the middle of Ironman training and it went something like:  "I'm fatigued all the time, except when I'm training."  Anyone else have this going on??  I felt tired and crappy yesterday and today.  Got in the pool and felt like a million bucks.  Same thing with the Run and Bike.  I gotta drag myself to start, but once I start I feel good.

I also have a little bit of the fatigue fog going on.  Anyone else??

I was just thinking something like this. I rode 80 miles on Sunday, did 75' yesterday and ran hill repeats, swam 3200 today and still have some big ring low cadence work to do later. I was tired all morning wondering how I was going to get through my swim. Felt great in the pool but now feeling a bit tired again and wondering how I'm gonna get through the grindfest.

To top it all off I've got a HIM this weekend and am wondering how much to taper. I was going to make todays grind session my last hard workout and take Friday off completely, then race on Saturday. It's basically a C race as a long training day/tune up sort of thing. I'm torn about tapering a bit more to race harder than I am planning right now, but don't want to pay for it next week. Next week I've factored in 2 days off and easing back into workouts as recovery, if an hour run and 2 hour bike on Wednesday is easing back in

You're doing Harryman Saturday... DUDE... TAPER NOW!!  TAPER HARD!!!  No, seriously... I would remove all intensity, keep everything really light and short.  You want to be 100% for that race.  The hardest half Ironman I've ever done.  6,000 feet of climbing on the bike, and non-stop hills on the run.

The bike course is different this year apparently, don't know if you've seen the web site. 4 loops, 14 miles each. Good times. Still some climbing I suppose and I think it's the same run course.

Have you done Savageman? I've got a feeling Savageman may be tougher than Harryman, but I'm not taking it lightly

Sounds like the HarryMan course is just going back to the normal course since Tiorati Drive was closed last year. You will be doing the same "big" climb (around 2-3 miles up at a steady %) 4x's. Other than that it is rolling terrain. I'd say this climb has two sections that are about the same or a tad steeper than the steepest section on the LP course.

Thanks for the scouting report guys. I am planning on a 12-25 cassette since I've been training with that (plenty of hills around here) and intend to ride that at LP too. Only other cassette I have right now is an 11-28 I used at Savageman. Might be overkill for Harryman and LP?

I have been considering a 27 for LP but don't have time to pick one up and do some decent hills rides before Saturday

Comparisons:

Cassette gears and the gear inches for two largest gears on the cassettes:

How much do you weigh and do you happen to train with power? Know your FTP? Are you using a standard crank? If I was doing 2 loops of that course and had to run a half mary, I'd use a 12-25. 4 loops? Man, I would preserve my legs and eat a huge slice of humble pie and spin as much as I could up that climb. Think long term over the bike course. I'd use the 11-28.

Edit - better to show up overgeared than undergeared. You still have the 24 if you feel good.

156 this morning, compact front (50/34), no power meter.

I hear you on all points (and the Inspire from DC) and will put the 28 on my race wheels. I always say it's better to have "it" (coat, hat, umbrella, 28 tooth cassette) and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Just thought I'd pass along a movie recommendation. I recently purchased and watched "Living is Winning" which is a triathlon documentary that features IMLP. Its a truly inspirational film and I enjoyed it very much. It's not available on netflix yet but the movie's website is www.livingiswinning.com. You can watch the trailer in the lower right hand corner to see what it's about. Hope everyone is having a great training day!

When I've been forced inside to ride this year, which has been quite often given the crappy weather here in New England, I've been using Coach Troy's Lake Placid Training Ride vol 2 on my trainer.

"Starting in Lake Placid, the ride takes you down the hill to the town of Keene then over rolling hills to the sleepy town of Jay. The climbing really starts on the way to Wilmington, with an out and back section on Haselton Road that shocks the legs. Once back in Wilmington, the last leg of the ride includes a 14 mile uphill jaunt back to Lake Placid with the incredible White Face Mountain and the Au Sable River on your right side."

Is this the same route we'll be riding this year, or has it changed?

Thanks,

Ralph

Latest I heard is that the course is staying the same as last year, with the out and back to Ausable Forks.

The course is not back to normal.  And I think it's actually going to be much tougher.  Here is the new map: http://genesisadventures.com/v4/2011HarryManWelchBikeMapApril.pdf

Years prior, athletes were able to enjoy the nice views along 7 Lakes Drive.  And 7 Lakes was mostly rolling terrian, and then athletes made a right onto Tiorati Brook Dr and after a few steep climbs were able to enjoy a long descent.  That section is gone now.  Instead, you are 7 Lakes for just a few miles and have to bang a U-turn, make a left and CLIMB back up Lake Welch Parkway!  Climbing back up that Parkway four times, and including the regular 3-mile climb 4 times is going to be absolutely brutal.

Do you know this for sure? I seem to recall that this was easier than the Haselton out and back.

Not from an "official" source but it is from Larry who runs the Fireman camps. He sent us all an email yesterday with:

"I talked with Brian at High Peaks Cyclery and he had just gotten back from a meeting and they confirmed that the bike will be the same as last year were you continue into Ausible forksfor about 5.6 miles...."

This is what we are riding this weekend. I have never ridden the old out and back, but from looking @ elevation charts, this out and back is flatter than the old one.

Strange. The entire loop is about ~14 miles too. Maybe they can condense bike aid stations this way with the multiple out and backs?

Stinks cause now you don't get the whole loop and Tiorati descent to recover before each big climb.  It will also be a lot less scenic.  The bike will just be a grind now.  I planned to race this year despite the change, but I have a wedding to attend the same day.  Hopefully next year they will go back to the original course.

As for the Ausable Fork LP Bike question; when I e-mailed WTC they said whatever is posted on the site (last years route with the Ausable Forks) is what will be used this year.

Feeling a bit beat up today...My legs did not enjoy my run at all this evening.

Something I was thinking about during my awful run though:

I know its been brought up a few times throughout the forums about training a fast walk for IM run. Anyone think there is a benefit to say doing a long walk every week or adding some extra time of "fast walk" onto the weekly long run? I'm just trying to be realistic...I don't want to walk the marathon and I have ran and entire marathon before...but maybe I will have to walk some of the marathon in the IM...and I figure trying to get some fast walk into my training routine leading up to IMLP might be somewhat useful? Thoughts? Anyone considering it for their training too?

I'm all signed up for the amateur challenge (sprint on Saturday, olympic on Sunday.)  I trained through this week and am eager to see how I can race in the middle of feeling dead.

While I won't be specifically 'training' with any walking myself I do believe incorporating walking into a long run is a fantastic idea. I have no doubt I'll walk some aid stations at the very least so toward the end of my longer runs I walk when I take my nutrition in. It's really only 30 seconds or so, that why I say I don't train with walking really but if you think it's something that might be helpful I think it's a great idea. A lot of people have trouble picking running back up once they are tired and start walking so training your legs to be able to pick back up again is always good. I read an article recently about this somewhere where the author suggested a few butt-kicks and attempts at high knees to get your legs firing again after walking a little bit. I liked the advice. Also, have a great race wingedfoot. I've heard great things about the race.

Good luck this weekend wingedfoot and mrbbrad!

Melissa  – Not sure if you want to practice walking but I agree with Nick that it might be helpful to stop, walk, and then practice starting up again… can’t hurt to try. But if you are feeling beat up and the need to walk or just generally fatigued during training it might be helpful to dial down the intensity or duration for a bit or just take an unscheduled day off so you can get back to feeling better (or just magic pants and ice baths!) haha. I know this is easier said than done though! Hope you feel better! J

Hope everyone headed to Lake Placid to train this weekend has fun! Let us know how it goes. I’ll be up there in a week and am excited to hear about your trip!

I’m getting pumped because I found out today I got upgraded to a kitchenette suite at Northwoods for race week. PHEW. The stress of not having a place to eat and cook was getting to me… thoughts of coolers, crock pots, and hot plates were scattered in my head. Hopefully those rooms are nice. (fingers crossed).

Hi IMLP peeps!

Nice to see some good race and training results from everyone. It's amazing to look back at how far we have come in the last 6 months..

Anyone else have the same problem as me? All of my clothes are too big! I'm down about 20 lbs from when I started Jorge's winter bike training program!

Hope everyone is feeling psyched that the weekend is here again. Time for lots of training. Remember to have some fun...

Hi ironwannabe

I had that problem a week ago when i went to S Africa for my grans B day.   However, i got over that problem by eating and drinking heaps - coupled with no training (which was the goal as my hamstring is buggered)...

Try a vacation - that`ll sort out the weight loss issue :-)  Otherwise work trousers do look kinda funny when you create a new hole in the belt....

First ride in 14days tomorrow.  Fingers crossed the hammie holds up.

Anyone else have the same problem as me? All of my clothes are too big! I'm down about 20 lbs from when I started Jorge's winter bike training program!

Hope everyone is feeling psyched that the weekend is here again. Time for lots of training. Remember to have some fun...

All my shorts and jeans are falling off me.
