I'm missing a couple tiles, may be I can pick a few up, cheap?

Nuts! Pictures?

I am turning in my company iPhone tomorrow and picked up a Motorolla smart phone of some sort last night. I didn't even look at it, I let the sales guy pick one out for me - from the ones I could get with my trade-in at no cost. They area ll the same to me if they are not an iPhone

It's very strange switching systems - I keep trying to press the home button that's not there - but I actually like the size of the new one better.

My iPhone 4s that I've had for allllllllmost 2 years has now decided that it doesn't like to make noises and doesn't want to send emails to me, but somehow the morning alarm still works - which, arguably, is more important than either of the other 2.

Of course, I still have 2 months to wait until I can trade the sucker in for a new phone.  Sigh.  First world problems.

My phone was shutting itself off, but then I had AT&T deactivate it.

I'm trying out Ting right now (no contract, pay for what you use) with a Google Nexus. It's awesome. If my usage trend stays the same for the next two weeks as it was for the last two weeks, my bill will be $32.

I might enjoy this.

ETA: downside - having to outright buy a phone when I was due for my upgrade :-P

I'm debating whether I would get another iPhone or not...  the Samsung Galaxy 5S and the HTC One are apparently the "best smartphones" out there right now.  I don't know what to do... stick with what I know with Apple, or go with something completely different?

I am also torn. Should we go to the store and see what they offer us? My phone is all but dead. Even deadier than yours. At least yours gets the interweb.

Yours is WAY deadier than mine is... we should maybe think of going in and seeing what we can get since our phones hate us.

I switched from TMobile to AT&T. I signed up for a "lease" program. Basically a pay a monthly fee for the phone, for a year, and at the end of the year I can trade it in or keep paying and own the phone in 1.5 years (something like that). I hated being locked down in a contract using the same phone for 2 years. I figured out if I bought the Samsung Galaxy (I think I have a 5S? newest model?) with their discounts I would be paying more and would have to keep the phone for 2 years, vs. leasing it for 1 year (the overall cost is less for the phone). I really don't care if I OWN my phone. I always just toss it in a closet when I'm done with it.

Verizon has kind of the same thing, called their "Edge" program where you can select a phone and have the cost of the phone broken up over 24 payments, but after the first year you can either upgrade to another phone (and start your payments all over again), or just keep paying for the same one and own it outright after the 24 payments.

Where that differs from the 2 year contract thing is that with the contract you only pay for 1/2 of the retail value of the phone, they forgive the other 1/2 due to the contract lock-in.

Most importantly... how do you like the Galaxy S5???  That's the one that's at the top of my list right now... NO MORE IPHONE!!

Galaxy S5 with AT&T Next is $32.50/month for 20 months (even on the 12 month plan). 2 year contract is $200.  But you get like $15/month off of your data plan if you do next.. So it's $350 at the end of the payment term? But if you upgrade in 12 months, you're still paying for the Galaxy for another 8? So two simultaneous phone payments?

I may have gotten that wrong.

I'm not sure I like the strings or $ attached with the early upgrade options.

So confused.

I like it just fine. But I have had this make/model of Smart phone for the last 3 years. I like how large the screen is, since it is already hard for me to type using an onscreen keyboard.  Taking pictures can be a little challenging (some come out blurry so I have to take multiple shots), otherwise I really don't have any complaints. Works great!

Yeah, it's about as clear as mud.

Pros to the Verizon Edge program:

  • it's either a full on "lease" program where you upgrade your phone every year and just pay the monthly fee for the phone on top of your bill
  • if you don't want to upgrade, you keep paying until the end of the 2 years and then own the phone outright

Cons to the Edge program:

  • your monthly bill goes up by at least $25/month ($50 in our case b/c of 2 phones)
  • you pay for the full retail price of the phone ~$600

Pros to the usual 2-year program:

  • you pay one fee for the phone = ~ $280 and the other 1/2 of the retail cost of the phone is forgiven
  • your monthly fee doesn't go up as you retain your monthly plan

Cons to the 2-year program:

  • locked into a phone for 2 years with no upgrades available

It's kind of a toss-up as to what you want to do... even if I had a spare $600 sitting around I still don't know that I'd pay that much for a phone, so we have to decide which of the other options is the best one to go with.

Thanks Kare!!  The camera on the iPhone sucks donkey balls anyways, so this can only be an improvement!!

Google Nexus 5 is $350... but I think Verizon and Google hate each other and it won't work on Verizon.

TAN Confession:

I have not bandied a race, but I have knowingly ran with bandits

1 - a friend that joined me for the first few miles of a half marathon as a warm-up for her workout

2- a friend joined me for the second half of a marathon. he'd run the half as a legit runner many times, but wanted to see the second half of the course and didn't want to train for full. Also, he had a balloon so I could find him in the crowd. It said "Happy Birthday". Many people wished him a happy birthday, and it wasn't even his birthday! In the same run, two or three others joined me for the last 3 miles. THE SHAME!

(one of the guys who ran the last 3 had on a cow stuffed animal hat. a local TV reporter interviewed him after crossing the finish line, and he said "it felt like i only ran three miles!")

I'm glad to have gotten that off my chest.

Let the public shaming begin :-P

No public shaming from me, but I'm sure I'll get some as I ran a few miles of the Chicago marathon last year with people without being signed up.

Banditing question:

Often, one hasher would register for an event, and would copy a few bibs. A few would run the event.

BUT non-running hashers would be on the side of the course, with FREE BEER. Like, an entire keg. With little cups for runners and spectators alike.

Does it even out, morally?

Seriously though. I understand that banditing isn't a good thing. But, as far as this public shaming of those Boston runners has gone... penalty outweighs the crime, in my opinion.

Free beer to the general public??  That's awesome!  Of course, I'd like it better if it was cider or something...

I know banditing a race isn't a good thing either - but I also refuse to feel as horrible as some have been bound and determined to make me feel.

In my case, I never had any intentions of doing the full race, I never took anyone's bib number without their consent, and I had NO intentions of crossing the finish line and getting a medal.  I had a medium-length run that I had to do that day and thought it would be fun to do them with some people.  That's all.

In my case, I never had any intentions of doing the full race, I never took anyone's bib number without their consent, and I had NO intentions of crossing the finish line and getting a medal.  I had a medium-length run that I had to do that day and thought it would be fun to do them with some people.  That's all.

Free beer for everybody!

They can be found around mile 22 of the ING Miami Marathon, and around mile 23 of the A1A Marathon

But, as far as this public shaming of those Boston runners has gone... penalty outweighs the crime, in my opinion.

people handing out beers is pretty common for the 2 big races in va beach.  during the half marathon i ran last month there were about 5 groups hanging out handing out beers in the first 4 miles - which are also miles 8-12 - that's a lot of beers!

I need something new and fun and ACTIVE to do...

A workout that doesn't feel like a workout...  I never thought I would miss my riding buddy as much as I do.  Some MTB rides would be cool about now.

I know what you mean Jim. Mostly I like doing whatever I'm doing on my own. I can go when I want, set my own pace, etc etc. There are those days tho that someone to provide that extra ounce of motivation would be very welcome. As far as something new goes I mix my routes a lot. I have about 10-12 that are in the mix and when I get bored with those I go out on the bike and map new ones. Fortunately there's lots of alternatives around where I live.

Or you could switch to AT&T and get a better deal? Ha! My lease program doesn't have me buying the phone. Yes, my bill is higher, but when I worked out the difference of buying the phone vs. paying a monthly fee, I saved money going the monthly fee route. Switching from TMobile (who no longer offers deals on phones, they make you pay full price for a brand new phone) to AT&T, my bill went up around $15 a month. But I'm not going to have to keep my phone for 2 years and count down the days till I get an upgrade, and I saved money over just outright buying a $600 phone!
