Now the good news:

I figured out an awesome way to get in a trainer ride at night. (This works for me because we don't have kids.) I put a whole chicken in the oven, and then was able to ride the trainer and do a bunch of chores while it was cooking. So a cheap, healthy meal, a good workout and got some cleaning done.

On another front, my spouse saw a doctor yesterday who told him to lose weight. The doctor I guess was preaching all kinds of stuff about not eating starches (duh). I've been telling him for a year that if he went gluten-free and cut down on the potatoes, he'd rapidly lose weight. But, hey, if having an M.D. tell him this gets him to eat healthier, then I guess that's a good thing.

Yeah we arn't good at taking advice from the 'better half' most times. You'd think we would learn wouldn't you?

Hope it gets you both closer to where you want to be.

Merry Christmas everybody.  I hope you have a fun, exciting, magic-filled holiday.  Peace on Earth, good will toward everyone.

Enjoy the day, everything in moderation but love.

I plan to cut out of work early and make the gym before it closes, then AA and spend the night with my wife on our first Christmas Eve together in our new home.  Tomorrow, we get to spend it together, gifts, dinner, maybe a movie out.  Then her kids come on Saturday.

I was always somewhat intense about living life to the fullest.  But, interestingly enough, one of the most positive things to come out of the bout with cancer has been to dial that intensity up to the max.  I live every moment.   I feel the pulse of life beating through me.  Triathlon training has really helped focus the energy.   I'm grateful for your part in that.  It's really not about winning, not even about recording a PB.  The joy is in the journey.

Merry Christmas to the Christians among you.  Happy Holidays to everyone no matter what you believe or don't.  Life is good.

Question:  Can we log "staying up too late to wrap Christmas presents for the kids instead of working out" as training time?  The only reason I ask is that today, my back hurts as much as if I'd gone on a 3 hour ride!

Happy Holidays!!!!

Almost forgot to mention: New addition to the family last night...

CycleOps Mag trainer. I don't like to ride indoors, but we had some money left over from a parent's holiday gift...and a 20%-off-one-item member sale going on at REI until today...so we got it. No bells and whistles at all, bottom of the line product, but it'll do the job when the weather's bad.

IceMan -- Through your struggles with cancer and AA, you have really gained some wise insight into the human condition. Thank you for sharing that with us.

Todd-- A new trainer. I so envious.

To all you out there in cold country -- stay bundled and safe...

Peace to all--- and to all a good night.

Hey all.  Merry Christmas.  Having a wonderful time in Central Illinois, where the birds are shivering.  13 degrees.  Present opening was a hoot.  The wife got aoll she wanted plus enough gift cards for a shopping spree to boot.  She did great with a lot of LiveSTRONG clothes to run in, a lot of new clothes that fit my lesser frame and a gift card at the bike shop.  She knows I want to get a tri bike.  It's great that we can reinforce eachother's needs and wants.  Life is sweet.

Today is an enforced rest day - no way am I running in all this ice and the gym is closed so no pool, indoor track or stationary bike.  I could do some strength training, but I haven't taken a day off in a while, so I may just take her to a movie.  Back at it for a while tomorrow, bike, run and swim maybe or a combination of two of the above.

After the holiday, I really need to look at how I decide what I'm going to do every day.  Usually I bike because I like it and I get a really good workout going..then decide to run every other day for a max of three a week, and swim every other day for a max of three times a week.  My coach at Masters just mentioned I should up that to 5 times even if the other two are just doing a 400- to 600 lap swim.  I guess what I'm saying is my training seems based on spontaneous decision making. How do I feel today?  What do I want to do today?  I feel good about it because everything stays fresh and enjoyable that way.  I don't feel like I must, I feel like I want.  But I wonder if I should be more rigorously disciplined with a capital D.  That just doesn't seem like me.

Merry Xmas Everyone. I was at my parents the last few days, thus the lack of messages.

...and workouts for that matter. But I will be changing that soon. I got a Garmin Forerunner 305 for xmas. I am a total numbers person when it comes to workouts so I am really looking forward to it. I got a test run in today so I'll be upgrading my membership and uploading the data when I have time to.

Hope everyone has a great rest of the holidays.

Congrats on the Garmin, Matt, I'm very jealous!

Got a set of Profile Design Aerolite clip ons from Santa and put them on today.  Kind of funky after riding around the block a bit and will definitely take some getting used to, as I've never ridden with aero bars before.  Going to head out tomorrow on a long, straight stretch of highway and give 'em a spin ... wife and kids left today for Phoenix to visit my mother-in-law, so no time limits on the ride!!!

Playing some catch up over the next few days with my weekly and monthly goals, and I might actually make them, though probably not the monthly run goals.  Thrilled with my progress, though, and I can't wait for a 10k trail run on the 4th of January.  Going to be brutal, but I just want to finish.

Lynn, you in for the "Trail of Torment" at Mission Trails Regional Park?  Still lots of space left, and only $35 ...

Hey, if you get to log that, then I get to log "cooking a fabulous dinner for 7 straight hours instead working out." My back still hurts and I'm tempted to go see the massage therapist! Ha!

Hope everyone had a great holiday. Happy Kwanzaa!

Hope everyone's having a good weekend...good opportunity to get a headstart on New Year's resolutions.

Not many training options for me where I am this weekend: No bike, no pool...and my sister's house is on top of a mountain pass at about 1000'. Can you say "running hills every day"?

Couldn't get to that link...I'll look it up though.

We're on our way to the mountains for some snow play. We borrowed snow shoes for some hiking and the boys (son and a friend) will be sledding. Glad everyone seemed to make it through the holidays relatively unscathed! "See" you all on Monday or Tuesday.

No biking or swimming the next couple of days, but I'll be hiking at 6000 plus feet.

Safe travels home Todd and whoever else is headed home.

Sorry to break the string of wonderful Christmas stories, but I decided to split up with my spouse on the 26th. I wasn't planning to leave, but I just couldn't take any more. It has been a long time coming. And it's a long story.

Strangely, I feel very at peace and happy for the first time in a long time. For now things between him and I are civil, and I hope it can stay that way.

These are always hard things to hear, but if you are convinced it is the best thing for you, then I'm glad for you.  Clarity in matters of the heart isn't always easy to find.  For me, it's been a lifetime search.

Sorry for the product plug here, but I am completely sold on aero bars!  Installed the new entry level Profile Design Aerolites and went for a ride yesterday.  Took some time to get used to the control of the bike, but once comfortable I was easily 3mph+ over what I normally ride.  Maybe I was pushing harder, maybe it's the body position that makes it easier ... whatever, I don't care, I was fast!

It was insanely windy yesterday along the coast and some northbound stretches I could only hit 12mph ... kept thinking, "you've GOT to be kidding me!".  Brutal and my legs are sore today, but when the wind died down or I was heading south, it was very, very pleasant.  I thought that the aero position would be a killer based on using the drops, but it's actually quite comfortable.

I'm hooked.  If you don't have aero bars and have been considering the benefits, I'd say go for it.

Susie: Very sorry to hear it, but--having made the same decision myself several years ago--sometimes it has to happen and is usually for the best. I hope that this transition can move forward with as little conflict as possible.

Susie,

Really sorry to hear about that. I know there's nothing we can say, but I wish you the best. Hopefully you can channel any bad feelings into something positive ie s/b/r!

I'm gonna try to run a few times this next week, very short distances and see how the knee holds up. I'd like to try to keep weekly bike miles above 100 after the holidays (till then we'll see)

One more week and we're in the new year!

Quote for the week:

CRITICS

They speak only of winning vs. losing…
Tounge talkers… strategy makers… expert babblers…
Usually… it’s from a comfortable place called a couch.
I hear it’s the place to be every weekend come ball season.
Like they know what it takes to put their on the line beyond high school.
Hey honey… can you bring me some chips and beer?
Pay your dues and let time do its thing.
For whatever the reason… win or lose.
I’ve come to battle.
So when the gun goes off…
Get off your couch.
Come bring what you got.
CAUSE…
I’ll be looking for a good beating........Jon Blais
