Kido - 2010-01-04 8:36 AM First day of my IM plan started this morning!!!

Not sure who is local (Las Vegas valley), but I want to plan 3-4 rides on the course this winter if anyone is interested in meeting up and perhaps car pooling or something.

Hit me up, I have riden it once already but plan to do so several more times before May 1st...

I'll be there come rain or shine riding the full 112 on Feb 6 and running one 13.1 mile loop on Feb 7. The run is dependent on my stress fracture recovery, which at the moment isn't looking good.

For those in Texas I'll try to give a report that provides a good comparison to the Austin hills.

Good news, bad news from the orthopedist yesterday.  Nothing structurally wrong with my hip...just bad bursitis...gave me oral steroids for that.  But told me (and showed me on the x-rays) that I've got pretty significant arthritis in my left foot.  Nothing I can do about that and it doesn't bother me much if I wear my orthotics, but I have a lot better understanding of my bad left foot and ankle than I've gotten from three podiatrists over the last 10 years.  If the hip comes around, I should be good to go...albeit undertrained on the run...in May.

I know this has been bothering you for a long time. I am really surprised to hear you even mention it hear -- you rarely do. Do the rollers bother you when running? This course has plenty...

Yup...I can't run much in general right now, but I've really had to lay off of hills...that definitely aggravates the hip.  Definitely on the mend, though, and the ortho feels that the steroids will knock down the bursitis pretty quickly, so I'm ramping the cycling back up and waiting on the hip before starting in on the running again.  The good news is that I'm a very strong runner, so the time spent on cycling isn't wasted and I'll still have plenty of residual run fitness...just have to really be cautious to avoid re-injury.

That would be great.....I was wondering were you are riding to get most of you climbing on long rides in Austin.  I am having a hard time getting a ride in that has over 4000 ft.

Well, I've never tested the old saying that it's better to be undertrained than overtrained but my run preparation will be nowhere near I wanted it to be and I will be testing that theory right along with you.

Who knows, maybe the time off running will pay off as we bike more now and don't beat ourselves up running for a couple/few more weeks. I'm trying to convinice myself of that every stinkin day I can't run.

I live in Lakeway so I will go out and back across the damn which means I climb that hill twice. After that it's loops on 620, Bee Caves and 360. With multiple loops on 360 my 100 mile ride last week had 7,000 feet of climbing. My legs were toast the next day as that's my first 100 miler since IMFL in 08. Thank goodness I didn't have to run after that ride.

This will be my first Ironman.  Really happy the swim is flat!  I always said if I was going to do an Ironman it would be a tough one, looks like I picked the right one!  Rode 75 miles in 4.5 hours yesterday with about 1000 feet of clmbing in the middle, man it sucked, now I only need to increase the climbing by about 4x.  According to my math I should be able to leave myself about 8 hours for a punishing jog/walk to the finish.   Been reading the posts here - thanks for all the couse notes and advice from all the posters, just ordered some DVDs to get my climbing legs ready for May 1st!  My Goal for the race: Anything prior to a midnight finish will be a W for me!

Welcome to the club Jason... This will be my first I'm too and I didn't have a choice, since my team selected this race. What encourage me the most is that I'll have 2x braging rights after the race...

Well, I can only say that doing my first marathon a while back grossly undertrained was teh massive suck...so I'd certainly avoid undertraining as best I can.

The oral steroids the orthopedist put me on have been working so far...actually was able to ride 82 miles Saturday and do a nice, leisurely, 12 mile run on Sunday...after not being able to run 1/4 mile without severe pain a week earlier.  So, hopefully, I'll be able to get to where I'd like to be by 5/1.  ::fingers crossed::

Finally getting back from injuries (and pool closure)...got in 141 miles of S/B/R over the last 7 days, including first swim since Nov. 24 (finally switched to a different pool).  Couple aches and pains still...watching my hip injury pretty closely, hoping it doesn't flare up again.  But starting to feel like I'm close to where I'd planned to be at this point...

I am also getting closer to where I thought I would be at this point.  I am getting almost all of my training in and I may actually get to ride outside this weekend.  Still a long way to go but I feel better about my ability to get the training done.

I have mix feelings with this training.  I’m following the instructions by the book to my coach, MarkAllenonline.com, but I’m not getting use to train in HR Zones.  I’m swimming, biking and running, way less than what I normally do without worrying about the HR.  Let’s see what Happens…Undecided

It's been a VERY GOOD few days of training for me only because I was able to actually run 3.6 miles Wednesday and 4 miles today. Both runs were pain free. Back from injury 2 weeks earlier than anticipated.

Cardio feels fantastic as I added A LOT of bike miles the last couple weeks (350 miles). Run legs should come back pretty quick. Scaling back this weekend on bike distance but adding intensity. Probably 100 or 120 mile long bike next weekend. Just waiting to see what the coach prescribes.

And, to top it off the weather is finally supposed to get back into the 70's this week.

I am WAAAY ahead of where I was at this same point in time for my last IM. Now, if I can just stay healthy for the next 16 weeks I'll be a happy camper. Kona or bust!

Hey...I'm finally feeling pretty good...bring it on.    Hip's about healed up.  Got in almost an hour continuous swim Saturday, about a 6 hour ride Sunday, 3 hour run Monday.  Still a long way from where I should be on the run (marathon coming up before SG), but given how long I was on the shelf with injuries this winter, I'm happy right now.  (Apart from the ridiculous rain we're getting.)

X 2!!!!

I am just currious to know..........where is everyone at on their long rides, runs, and swims? (how long are you going)

I just did a 4 hr ride this last Satruday w/ a 30 min run.  And Sunday did a 2:10 run and a 2400 swim.

See above.

Specifically:  Saturday was 55+ min. nonstop swim / 3050 yds (although I'd already done a two-mile swim in the late fall before pool closed for repairs).  Sunday was 5:55 / 84 mile ride.  Monday was 2:50 / 17.6 mile run (slow for me, due to injury rehab).

Planning a 90+ mile ride this weekend, then about a 19.25 mile run on the 30th (unless the weather's bad, in which case I'll switch those two sessions around).

I'm doing rides just like you by now. The only problem is that I just injured my heel. I hpe that by the time I get back home, I'm in Brazil now, I can have my long run ok.

I've done a couple 80 mile rides and a 100 miler a couple weeks ago. Last couple weeks have been 50-80 mile rides with more intensity. I'm going to guess next couple weeks will be more volume again. Just started back running after 3 1/2 weeks off so long run is at 6. Came back from injury early so coming back into it VERY slowly. I was up to 16 mile run and I've run more in the last year than ever, so I hope my base carries me through the race. I don't usually do a lot of steady, long swims so most swim workouts have been 3,600 - 4,000 meters. I'll probably do some longer OWS as we get closer to race day.

Aside from my run injury I'm real happy with where I am. I'm mentally preparing myself to just survive the run because I feel like I've fallen behind, so as of right now I'll probably push the bike harder on race day because the run will be survival anyhow.

Heading to St George to ride and run course in a couple weeks so I'm looking forward to that!

Man ya'll are putting some miles in.  That 4 hr ride was just 60 miles w/ a little over 3000 ft of climbing and the run was just over 11 miles.

rbalazs,

Were do you do your OWS in Austin?....I am looking to start doing one every other week leading up to the race.

When you get back let me know how the climbing compares to Austin rides.
