cornerofdivision - 2010-09-26 9:03 PM I just bought a new Cervelo P2. I think it has 50/34 crankset and a 12/25 cassette. Has anyone ridden this combination at Lake Placid? If so would you ride this setup again or change to a 12/27 cassette?

I did Lake Placid this past year on a P2 with a 50/34 and 12/25.  If I had it to do over again, I probably would put the 11/28 on.  It would have been nice at a couple of points during the ride to have another gear to drop into (e.g., Papa Bear on the second loop).  I had an almost 7 hour bike split though, not 6 or 6:15.  You probably have nothing to worry about either way.  Good luck.

I'm kicking around the idea of a 11-28. I got one for SavageMan (and was very glad I did) and may use it for HarryMan. I have an 11-25 also and plan to train with that all winter with some hill focus.

Some back story; I recently purchased a new bike (no pjorn posted yet) and went from a  triple/12-26 to a compact/11-25. I only got in a few rides with that before I swapped out the rear for the 11-28. I need to get some good saddle time in with the compact/11-25 before I know what I really want to use at upcoming races. I definitely needed 28 at SavageMan but not sure about LP (or MarryMan, but my approach there is a long training day.) I hope to get to Placid in June and do some recon. I rode it this year but with the triple. I did use the small front ring a couple of times, but never with the 26 in the rear. Anyway, plenty to ponder over the next 298 days.

Hahaha! Is this your first official "freakout?" I love it. For some reason I had my race countdown at 301 days - but I'm glad you posted this so I could correct it.

The only thing I'm freaking out about is not knowing a single thing about bike gearing... I need some serious help

A.) I know little to nothing about Bike gearing.  Just learn how to grind it out on the drainer in the winter, and then grind it out on the road during the Spring, and you'll be just fine.

B.) As of this posting there are 297 days, 22 hours, 42 minutes and 39 seconds till we begin the Journey.

I am in!

1. Is this your first IM? Yes, due to a bike wreck in June that lead to shoulder surgery it knocked me out of IMLou this year.

2. Have you done LP before? Nope

3. What are your goals for the 2010 race? Make it to the start line, the become a IM.

4.How/Why did you select the Lake Placid Race? Hello, its Lake Placid

5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc) I am sure there will be plenty to come.

We found a condo for race week and have sent in the contract and hefty deposit. Phew..finding a place to stay for IMLP is almost as hard as getting into Active to register for the race. We are staying in place at Whiteface Club and Resort which is out the way of the grocery store about 2 miles from town.

I guess I better start looking for someplace to stay. I'm expecting to be severely gouged - just like Penticton in 2009. I need to get ready to spend high $$ I guess ?

I did Canada in '09 and found the gouging to be less than Lake Placid.

Look now and you can find some less expensive places. I looked on vbro. Also if you stay outside of town it will be less expensive. Sharing a house/condo with others can make it a bit cheaper.

KathyG posted a link earlier that directs you to a discussion about gearing. I found it very informative. I am in for LP as well. I have raced LP several times and find it to be a wonderful place to race. I am self coached, so I have made every mistake possible, and I generally start my official training plan on January 1st. Buckle up, because the IM journey is an incredible ride!

Happy October! How's everyone's training been going? I'm trying to ramp up for the Richmond marathon in November but having some leg/shin pain issues I'm working through... gettin myself pumped up for a nice ice bath! :-o

I had a question for the group... Is there a general consensus on races leading up to an IM? I guess it depends a lot on your goals and general fitness like everything with this sport...

I'm trying to plan out a race calendar for the first part of next year. I was planning on doing a half IM that is about 11-12 weeks out before the race. But there are a few Olympic distances I wanted to do as well... One is 5 week and the other is 9 weeks before IMLP... Wasn't sure if that would be a good idea... Anyone have any thoughts on that!?

Thanks!
Ryan

Shin pain, eh.  There is a good article in this months Runners World magazine that illustrates specific strength training techiques to incorporate into your training regiment that can reduce all the most common running injuries.  I highly recommend picking up this months magazine.  For me, from my short experience of 5 years running, I've found that yoga and strengthening my hips, glutes and core has great decreased my running injuries.  Wintertime is an excellent time to work on that kind of stuff.

As for racing prior to IMLP, many people including myself like to do a HIM in late May, early June.  An Olympic in mid-June would also help 'blow out the cobwebs'.  However, many people do zero races.  It's all up to you and your fitness and how it fits into your training.  Usually it's a good idea to plan a Recovery week after the HIM.

For me, I'll be doing a ton of races (triathlons, road races, possibly a Marathon in April) before Lake Placid.  This is an agressive approach however, and I don't recommend it.  A conservative approach would be one Olympic/or Sprint race, and one HIM around 2 months out, and that (I dare to guess) would probably work best for most.

The big issue with racing the 8 weeks before IM is you miss long training weekends and miss your long rides and long runs. There comes a time where getting long workouts in is key and needs to be number one priority. I don't work so I can race on weekends and still get long stuff in. For me recovery is a big concern as I'll be 50 next year so racing a HIM takes some recovery time for me.

Year I did LP, I didn't do a HIM, but did a HIM relay as biker, I did early May Oly, following week a sprint, late June I did an Oly aquabike.

Hard thing with LP, is tough to do much racing before race if you live in North then if you recover a month after race, season is almost over.

It's just under 5 weeks to IMFL which is my focus now...not really thinking much about LP yet other than I need start riding more hills after FL is done.

I am meeting with my (brand new) coach for the first time on Friday, and one of the things he would like me to put on the table are the races that I am considering between now and IMLP. I would like to race the Knoxville Rev 3 (half-iron distance) on May 15th, and then race Lake Placid exactly 10 weeks later. Probably train through a couple/few local races between the two just to stay sharp. Like CathyG, I can get my long stuff in during the week - actually prefer to do so if I can so I can still hang out with "normal" folks on the weekend ;^)

Of course, this plan may change after my Friday meeting.

As to "shin pain" - there are so many things that could be causing it - most of which are not as bad as the worst you could imagine... I used to have similar problems when I would ramp up my mileage, and agree 100% with DC - what works for him works for me too: strengthening hips, glutes and core during base season (with added flexibility work on hams and achilles for me). 'Course that does not help you much right now - what worked for me when I found myself in your shoes was deep tissue massage/trigger point therapy  in the affected areas as well as connectors. Once a week for 4 weeks knocked it out. Again - could be a million things, what worked for me may not work for you - especially if you have an actual muscular/structural injury. A good diagnosis is key.

During my build and racing periods I do DTM maintenance once a month and chiropractic occasionally. YMMV.  Interested to see how/if I will work my regular maintenance into IM training...

Now off to the pool! My coach wants to see me swim on friday - maybe if I cram 15,000 meters in between now and then he won't know that I have not been in the pool for eight weeks - YIKES - DC, mind if borrow one of your freak outs?!

As for races, most training programs have you do an Olympic in May and a Half In June, to work your on nutrition and race management and training. These are not your "A" races, so you so race them as such. It has worked well for me, but everyone has a different plan. I am doing Columbia Triathlon in May, and Eagleman In June, and then IMLP!!! I just began my offseason training, I will not begin my IMLP until Febuary. No more racing for me...

How many miles do you have on those shoes?  I have three pairs I rotate.  When they get to around 400 miles, I throw them out.  Sometimes the materials in the shoe breakdown causing a 'deadspot' and this could also cause shin pain.

400 miles?!?! curse you normal runners!  ;-)

I have a goofy supinating left foot that causes me to wear out my left shoe inside 200 miles, while my right shoe has a good 200 miles left. I have dreamed about finding someone out there with same problem in their right foot. I have boxes and boxes of shoes we could trade... size 10, anybody?

I too rotate several pairs shoes (different brands, even) and surfaces (asphalt, concrete , track, granite fines, trail),  and "fortunately" only have about 40 pavement miles per week in my legs before they begin to come apart, so it does not SEEM like I have to replace shoes as often as I really do...

I did Quassy last year, and likely will be racing it again.  In a nut shell: I met Craig Alexander, my kids played at an amusement park for two days, the expo was awesome, transition is awesome (you get your own Transition box), the swim is a wave start and in a fresh water lake, the Bike is crazy hilly and challenging, the run is 2 miles downhill to start, then around 6-miles of killer hills, then flat for the rest with a few rollers.  I would highly recommend the Rev3 race as they put on a Top-Notch race; and the course conditions mimic LP very closely, and are actually more challenging despite being half the distance.

DC – Thanks for the advice – I will definitely check out that Runners World article. Perfect timing to work on stuff like that this winter.  I have just over 200 on those shoes but I also run on crappy old shoes at the gym when I run on the treadmill for my short runs… so that’s a good point to think about!  I’m going to replace my shoes and downgrade my current 200mile shoes to my gym shoes I think just to be safe.

KathyG- Good luck in the prep for IMFL! I had never thought of switching the long workouts to a weekday and doing an Olympic or something on the weekend as training. That might be doable if I have some vacation to use.

Tank – That makes sense. I’ll have to monitor it and if the things I’m doing don’t help I’ll definitely need to consider seeing a doctor and massage therapist – For now it doesn’t seem that bad yet so fingers crossed. Good luck meeting with your new coach! Let us know how it goes!

Joborneman3 – I am in DC and probably going to do Columbia and *maybe* Eagleman, but was really mostly considering Kinetic for my ½. I’d like to do the DC tri again but that might be too much!

Thanks for everyones help!

Ryan
