Anyone else trying to figure out how much bike and swim to do during taper? I'm being 100% guided by the knots in my calves on swim & bike volume right now. Do you foam roll, or use the stick, Todd? Hurts like a #*#$ ....but so much better after! Two bikes this week, done. Two swims, one done, one more Fri. Swimming makes my joints feel so much better and biking loosens up my hip flexors. TWELVE more days!!!! |

Hurts like a #*#$ ....but so much better after! Two bikes this week, done. Two swims, one done, one more Fri. Swimming makes my joints feel so much better and biking loosens up my hip flexors. TWELVE more days!!!! I use the Stick religiously. Calves are actually doing very well, given I was worried at the beginning of Feb. that I was developing compartment syndrome. (Which is not to say that I might not be on the road to CS...overheard a pretty disturbing comment about that which fit my current calf complaints pretty closely to another runner from a PT who had myofascial release surgery himself.) Just trying to balance necessary maintenance (HIM coming up this summer) with keeping lower legs on the road to full rehab. Cycling and swimming (pushing off the wall, mostly) tend to aggravate the calves, so keeping volume pretty low there...lots of easy spins on the trainer...some pull buoy to reduce some of the strain of kicking. |

Member 10 Ridgecrest, California | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon : Official Thread Real short speed work today. 5 miles with 2 miles at 7:08 pace. Word of caution~do not play Xbox Kinect with your kid too close to the race. We played last weekend and between the V'ball and track my right calf is squacking! I ran with compression sleeves on Monday and that seemed to relieve it some. Must be getting old! |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon : Official Thread Just caught up on this thread. I've put in a 20 miler at 6:36 pace and an 18 miler at 6:23 pace. I haven't been running hills at all though. Not sure what's going to happen at the marathon. I'm just going to run comfortably hard. No set training plan for the next two week, just going to make it up as I go. |

Here in the California High dessert the wind has been howling, if you watched any of the LPGA tournament this weekend you know what I mean. Anyway, my finished my last 20 miler in the mountains behind my house (8:26/mi). That's right on target per my Runner's World Smart Coach. I've used it for all my half and full marathons with good success. Currently no injuries (me knocking on wood). I've done a bunch of riding on my bike trainer this time to see how building my quads may help me in the race. Plus plan is to go for Arizona Ironman next. Good luck everybody, btw I'm in Wave 1, coral 9.
Nice, I'm also in for Boston and IM Arizona, think we will have a good running base for the Summer Wave 1, Corral 5 |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon : Official Thread Oh my gosh Destoryer you are soo fast!!! You are doing 20 milers at my 10k pace! And you just finished a 4:39 HIM. Well I wanted to run with the big boys, this should be interesting. I will be shooting for a 3:15:00 ish at Boston and hope the hills are not too bad compared to what I am used to. I am wave 1/8. I skipped the bike, gona cut my planned swim in half today and just keep things minimal outside of my runs. I have Vineman at the end of July, so my bike and swim are gona be really late in building. Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon : Official Thread Still a ways out, but weather forecasts are starting to align--5 of 6 I looked at today had high in mid-50s, low in low-40s, 4 of 6 were partly cloudy (one had rain, one sun). That's sounding perfect to me. We'll get more forecasts tomorrow once the date moves into the 10-day forecast window. |

Member 10 Ridgecrest, California | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon : Official Thread Accuweather says: 40-51 breezy with partial sunshine. Not bad and the days prior and after don't show rain as of today. Can't wait to see what tomorrow's forcast is. LOL Ran 3 easy today per my training plan, it's like I didn't even run. I'm going through the "watch everything I eat because I'm barely doing anything" stage of taper terror. I think tapering is harder than getting up at 5am to run a 20 miler. Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon : Official Thread Wife and I are flying out on a redeye from LAX Friday night (I think we get in around 8:30am Sat). Most of her immediate family live in Boston, Providence, and Portland, ME, and are gathering to support/spectate, so it's going to be a challenge not to get sucked too deeply into a whirlwind of family activity on Saturday and Sunday. |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon : Official Thread I'm taking a redeye on Friday as well, but leaving out of Burbank, layover in New York and into Boston early Saturday morning. I bought myself a ticket to Sunday's Red Sox game and plan on going from the game to the pre-race dinner. Too bad we're looking at rain on Sunday. At least it will be clear on Monday.
So if I'm in the first wave, but can't arrive at the Commons for a shuttle bus until 6:30 I'll still be okay right? I'm staying in Woburn and the first bus out of there is at 5:53, getting me into Boston around 6:15 with a short walk over to the commons. |

you will have plenty of time - race does not start until 10am... however dont be surprised if you have a reasonably long wait to get on the bus... lines were really long last year...!!! |
