I think kilometers should be the primary distance markers but I'm not surprised they are considering mile markers for the run.  I know a lot (ok, a couple) of Canadian runners who train and race marathons based on miles.

I think it would be good to put out some markers in miles - perhaps not as often but i think of the bigger marathons around here and if i can recall (it's been a couple of years since I did a marathon) they would do the miles every 3 or so.

Though i assume, maybe incorrectly, that at least on the run course the aid stations will be about every mile so it should be easy for the imperial folks to get their bearings since a lot people by then are really just looking to get from aid station to aid station! Wink

Anybody start training yet? I began building my run base in earnest about a month ago when I switched over to a BarryP type plan, currently at about 23 miles per week.

Starting Jorges winter cycling plan tomorrow, only because this timeline will allow me to finish it in spring about the time I can head back outside on a regular basis.

Swimming is still pretty much nonexistant. Going to have to get serious about that aspect soon.

From what ridewithgps.com tells me

Bike course : 2860 meters or 9400 feet

Run course : 590 meters or 1900 feet

This ain't gonna be a walk in the park

Interesting - are those per loop or for two loops total?

Just checking in here.

I have been rehabbing some injuries but am starting to become a little more consistent in training. My serious training does not start until  March.

I am self-coached for this one with my own plan.

What are others doing?

Coach?

Plan?

Self-coached here but will be following a BT plan.  Doing Jorge's winter bike plan right now (extremely happy with the results so far) and swimming with our masters group.  Up to now I have only been managing two swims per week but I would like to get that up to 3-4.  I tweaked something in my knee earlier this week so I'm laying off running for about a week and then will slowly start up again with the intention of getting the frequency back up to 5-6 days per week.  I can't wait until I can get home from work and not have it dark outside!

Actually it's quite likely the elevation gain is significantly less than this, as GPS-based systems/programs tend to over-estimate.

For consideration IMLP is 6,000' total elevation gain with a barometric altimeter and that is not a flat course. Is IMMT really that much more climbing?

Maybe, maybe not.

I have a couple of friends who were in Tremblant in October and rode some of the course.  I think they only got on the tougher Lac Superieur section as the 117 was under construction.  They said it will be tough but not that bad.  One of them has done Lake Placid and she didn't mention that it seemed any harder than that.  Unfortunately I only had a couple of minutes to chat with them about it so I didn't get any great detail.  They also said the run won't be too bad as a significant portion of it is on the flat trail section.

My IMMT training plan doesn't start until March as well.  Right now I am running like a madman and attempting to BQ.  After that it will be hours and hours on the CT.

BTW Fred - Got the IMMT Erg Video and it is fantastic - thanks for the recommendation!

As for plans, will be using a modified Fitz IM plan. Adding in extra biking and running and taking out some swimming. Want to average 600-700mi per month in the saddle and this is going to be attained by sacrificing some pool time!

I just use the "Be Iron Fit" plan as a general guide and work around other races that I want to do like marathons and hopefully the Chesapeake Bay Swim.  Thinking about RAGBRAI as well.  My schedule doesn't have to be perfect, I won't PR, I'll do fine, and minutes or tens of minutes don't matter.

RAGBRAI, might be a bit much, 3 or so weeks out from the race.  We'll see.

My plan starts Jan 23rd but I'm likely already doing what's decently into the plan.

Your welcome. I have been just riding the CT in ERG mode and watching Netflix instead. I kind of vary that up by boredom.

Which marathon are you doing?

The Woodlands Marathon. It shares some of the IMTX run course and I live 15mins away. It will be nice to run it without the oppressive heat and humidity that comes with IMTX!

Was going to run Houston on Jan 15th but I tend to like the small local races over the bigger ones. It is on March 3rd, so this makes it so I can roll right into IM training.

Swim training is going great - swimming faster and longer than I have in a long time

Bike training is going great - following Jorge's program and have raised my CP by 33 watts

Run training is next to non existant.    My knee was bothering me while running in late December so I took a few weeks off (after initially trying one week off).  I got 3 short runs in last week pain free so I'm on the road to normal running again I hope!

How about you Fred, how is your training going?  You are an experienced IM'er, do you have any words of wisdom for us newbies at the 8 months out mark?

No training required but I don't recommend trying it for the first time at any of the aid stations during the race.  Laughing

Haha uh-oh.  Hey that would be a good challenge, like when they have beer stations at races.  By the time we get to the run, I am so out of it that I'll try just about anything to kill the pain.

I don't plan on picking up training for a while.  My off-season schedule is still pretty busy so I need to worry about resting before kicking it up.  My knee needs a bit of rest after the Disney Marathon so I'm trying to hit a lot of spin and yoga classes at the moment.

Good! I finally kicked my knee injury from last Fall (runner's knee) and was able to PR my 10K the other weekend off of ZERO speed training. Chalking that up to a year of Lake Placid training abuse that was finally allowed to be absorbed into my body by actually taking a long period of rest.

Going forward:

Swim: Behind this time last year, but not worried at all. I just learned how to do flip turns and its actually built a lot of motivation to get INTO the pool. Guess I am eager to master the technique?

Bike: Ahead of this time in regards to strength. I have been doing a LOT of leg strengthing through physical therapy for my knee. This goes with my running as well. My legs are super strong, I just don't have the cardio to keep up! haha

Run: What I wrote above.

Do you guys and gals train with others that are also doing the race?  I know about 7-8 people who are racing and 3 of us were going to follow the same plan but that is now down to 2 as the other guy went over a guardrail on a high speed descent on his bike in September and after months of therapy, his surgeon determined that he will need surgery to reattach his clavicle to his sternum (something like that).

Good to hear people are excited and starting to build!

I am doing the same as Fred.  I was totally inconsistent through the fall. I am attempting to adjust my schedule to get morning workouts in and start logging the base hours to be ready for a plan.

It's 30 weeks to the race next week? Is that right or is my math off?

As for people to train with. My husband is doing the race so i'll have him but i know another couple so we may try to get together for some training with them because i have a feeling DH and i are going to be spending too much time together. :S  I know there are lots of folks in our area signed up - we just have to find them.

I have one guy that I know I'll be training with.  Another guy is signed up but it looks like he is ditching it.  One last friend is signed up but she's on another level and thus too fast to be hanging with me.

Is anyone doing Mountains of Misery?  I think it'll be a great benefit for MT.  After that, I have Mooseman, the Chesapeake Bay Swim, and the Morgantown Mountaineering Half, before settling down for the last two months.  Anyone else doing any of those?
