My experience was that even when you got close to someone, they would gently push, rather than hammer on you. And the water is beautiful, only light swell the year I did it. I experienced the least amount of contact in the water at Cozumel (did it in 2009, the first year) as opposed to other IM's I've done- FL and CDA. Swimming in clear water really helps because you can see everyone and you can move out of the way or swim around someone else before you realize you're on top on them. It *seemed* like people were more relaxed for this swim. I'm sure being able to see during the swim alleviated some peoples' swim anxiety. Having 100% visiblity is just awesome! The swim at Couzmel was great- it reminded me of a snorkeling excursion, minus the snorkeling gear and the addition of having more swimmers around I saw starfish, rays, as well as really colorful fish. The entire time I swam I was thinking to myself "Wow that is cool", "OMG it's a ray!" and it really helped keep the swim portion exciting. It was just awesome!! One more thing- the dophins got really excited to have all the athletes in the water and you could hear them talking underwater at the start! |

Expert 668 Lancaster, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel : Official Thread Thanks! -- TBT advices not to use the reg rear wheel- only use a trainer tire for rear wheel travel... hmm.. now I am trying to figure out how to get to Cozumel.. guess the best way and with whom? what's everyone's logistics to get to Cozumel? I just had a conversation with a Lomas Travel guy and he quoted me a round trip from airport to hotel door and back (including ferry tickets) for five people for $536... A private van to take us there and back.... pricey! if you ask me... gotta' figure something else out.

Master 2158 | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel : Official Thread I hadn't seen that about TBT and a trainer tire. I did notice that they won't take disc wheels due to the transport method. As far as logistics, I know we reserved a van from the airport in cancun. I want to say it was about 100.00. Ferry tickets we bought when we got to the dock. Can't remember the price. Taxi in Cozumel was easy, as we were in town. Sorry I don't have more details. |

Thomas Cheapest way to do it with your clan is to fly into Cancun, take the ADO bus to Playa del Carmen for $10 or so per person and the same for the bike. The ride will take some time but not at all bad. Once you arrive in Playa, walk down the street to the dock and hop on a ferry for about $10. It takes 45 minutes to get to Cozumel. Once you arrive, get a taxi to take you all to the hotel. A van may be the cheapest way to go. You may want to check the location of the property because a few are within walking distance from the dock. The link to the transport from Cancun to the dock may be even a cheaper route for you all. Expert 668 Lancaster, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel : Official Thread Thanks A lot Eli! Definitely cheaper than Lomas. I booked a ride for the five of us- for $5 more than taking the ADO travelmama mentioned on the post above. I'll do what mama said with ferry and taxi.Thank you both again...........as far as training goes I am chugging along with swimming & biking, not so much with the run. The knee is still not quite right we'll see what happens this month and if it is still like this next month, I will walk the 26.2.Thomas |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel : Official Thread As far at the taxis go, I stayed at the Melia Cozumel and it was usually between $6- $7 for a one way trip into downtown near the ferry dock. I can't remember how much the ferry was from Playa to Cozumel each way, but it wasn't too bad at all- definitely under $10 a person. If you are traveling with your bike- the year I did the race (2009) they tagged all our luggage going onto the ferry but didn't tag our bikes. Looking back I should have made them tag our bike cases so it would be accounted for- something to definitely consider doing. Also, be prepared for it being a little tricky with your rolling luggage in Playa by the ferry dock. The walkway/streets were cooblestone type, making it tricky to pull your luggage. It's doable but a little challenging. We had picka packs for our bikes, so that made it easier since our bikes could be carried on our shoulders. We saw several people with the rolling hard cases having a difficult time pulling them. Just something to be prepared for. A few things with the cab- make sure to ask how much they will charge before you get into the cab. If you don't get a set rate beforehand some will try to charge more. Also, you can pay in American cash or pesos. But they won't accept American change. We tried to tip our driver with a bunch of quarters and he didn't want to accept it. It was funny- we were like, why wouldn't he want a few bucks in quarters? It's still money! We later found out that it has something to do with the difficulty of to being able to convert it into pesos or something like that? Anyways, I had no idea but basically your change is not all that useful in Mexico |

Here is the link I found for booking ahead for cancun airport transportation: http://www.cancun-discounts.com/cancun-airport-transfers.htm Thank you for this! There is no way to fly from this area to Coz without an overnight layover, so we've got no choice but to fly into Cancun. |

Master 2158 | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel : Official Thread Hey All, How did your weekend go? I did a power test last Thursday on a computrainer, but the power file was lost. My Average power for a 10 min Warm Up, and 2x 20 Min all out with 2 min rest was 245, so I figured my FTP would be around 250. Did a great 67 mile ride with plenty of wind on Sunday, so feeling like my training is going well. Now, if I could just remember to get in the pool more often. |

Expert 819 Cincinnati | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel : Official Thread Did my first half ironman yesterday!! Followed all the strategies I've come up with so far for IMCoz and they all worked!!! Nutrition was off due to the course offerings not being what I expected on the bike, and then my stomach felt funky on the run, but nothing bad enough to derail me in the least. Race was flat, windy and warm on the run - good training for Coz. My time was 6:49, which was exactly where I wanted to be. That gives me some leeway to be a little slower at iron distance and still have plenty of time. I'm a "just finish upright" sort of triathlete! Only two things need to change: my bike seat and this weird knee pain I've been getting from cycling lately. Trip to the LBS is in order. |

My only concern is staying acclimated to the heat. It's tough to simulate heat/humidity here in MN in the fall. I would say get in the rides to build the fitness. You can always do 10 days of "heat" training by using a space heater/trainer or sauna running. |

Did 4 hrs on the trainer on Saturday, thank goodness for Neo and Peter Parker. Should be nice tomorrow so will try to get out for a 50k ride. How is everyone else going with 2 months to go? |

Expert 819 Cincinnati | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel : Official Thread Hi Nate! I'm having the same problem here in OH; the days are getting shorter and the mornings are cold, so it's limiting the times that I can ride. I rode 70 miles on Sunday, my farthest ride ever. The non-sbr parts of my training weren't going well - sleeping, eating, stress management - and I did my Saturday run a wee bit too hard. The result was a mental breakdown at mile 27, but I regrouped, slowed down, kept on going and promised myself breaks at certain points. I got it done. Good mental training day, I suppose. Work has been crazy and I'm just trying to roll with it and get my workouts in whenever I can. Running is going well. Swimming is not going well. My masters group has had the month off and I'm a little lost (and a lot bored) swimming solo, but they restart next week and I'll be back on track. |

Neo from the Matrix? if so, then I can see how you may sit for four hours... don't know if I could stand it for that long.. phew... I am starting to ramp up the training as golf season is winding down. I have not spent much time at all running. I only run when the knee does not hurt.. the last two runs have been great! with no pain! Cool weather is in the air now so training with heat is out of the window. This morning on the trainer I did not turn the fan on purpose but after 10 mins I could not stand it, so I turned it on... just rolling with the punches. I am so looking forward to the nice Hot! weather
