Foundation run w/ strides

This looks like some strong work.  What are those paces for you in terms of say your 5K or 10k pace or some other thing, like threshold?  Or why these paces?  Educate me.

I've never really trained for a "fast" marathon, so I purchased Matt Fitzgerald's plan from training peaks.  The plan uses PZI, article found here http://home.trainingpeaks.com/articles/running/using-pace-zone-index.aspx, which is a modified version of Jack Daniels' VDOT.

I used Jack Daniels' training philosophy to get my 10K time below 40 mins, but I'm not as experienced with how to build distance while managing training at a pace that won't destroy me in the long run.

Matt's plan seems to give me the style of training that I like, while keeping the focus on building an aerobic foundation for the marathon distance.  Plus his name is Matt, so he's got to know what he's doing

edit:  Never answered your pace question.  My 5K PR was at 6:09 pace, and 10k is 6:24, so the strides in my run today were FAST, but from what I read that's the point of them.

I love reading nearly everything Matt  Fitzgerald writes.

That is so smokin' fast.  Awesome.

Oh, thanks. I have a long way to go.

Wide receivers and running backs, eh? Must not have been the endurance potion.

5 + 2.4 Damn it!  I was distracted ;P

It was endurance for them.  Flat out sprint for me.  It was fun for about 10 seconds; boys in packs are a little scary.

Hey Mary,

I just wanted to share this link to Terry's website.  She is an INCREDIBLE person, and I have seen her beat this thing back first hand.  Her son is also very cool.  (He was one of my husband's students back in the day.) He became well-known for his testimony at the Iowa State House opposing the proposed amendment to ban gay marriage, which totally went viral and he has published a book recently, My Two Moms.

Hey Switch, thanks so much for the link. I do the cooking in our home so I read some about the diet. Glad you told me about her, I may get some of her books and read further!

Plan was: 1 mile WU, 4 miles tempo, 2 miles CD. Purpose was tempo run -- build lactate threshold pace. Purpose ended up being to get through it. Hot/humid and my legs were just toast. Tomorrow will be a rest day in preparation for 18 on Saturday.

Thanks for the link. She sounds like a really fascinating person. Amazing really what she's been able to do. My aunt has MS and the same kind that Terry was diagnosed with. Might take a closer look at the book(s) myself.

Totally forgot to run yesterday. It was the last day of my holidays before going back to work so i didn't really do anything..deliberately.

Today - just 10 mins on treadmill warming up for gym session. I started at 4.5km/hr (not sure if that's the correct units) and went up by km a min till 11.5km/hr which i sustained for a minuite before I had to reduce speed a bit. - purpose..to try to run faster

6.2 miles. Purpose: Celebrate getting into TN Ragnar and run hills. Originally planned to do the figure 8 hill repeats that K discovered but I had longer (since again I couldn't sleep) so I went a longer route and went to seek the bad a--- hill further away. On the flats, I found myself slumping again and laying back on my heells so I had to focus on the ankles, lean, and running tall. I want to be a gazelle but I saw my shadow and I'm a long way from being a sleek running machine. Pace was a disappointment but I can feel myself staying mentally focused so that is an improvement.

Last nights run was 3 miles. 1 mile warm up to the track, 1 mile track timed run (years since I did a timed mile) and 1 mile back. The purpose was to see what my mile time was. Found out I am a lot faster then I thought I was. ended up running a 6:48. I typically have been averaging just under 9 min/miles. So now I know I really need to push harder because I can go faster.

The purpose of today's run was to keep building easy base miles.  Busted out the IPOD for the first time in forever too.

I'm with you on the "try to run faster." Treadmill work is good for getting that quicker turnover. I need to remember to do that from time to time.

I'd be interested in hearing some thoughts from you Forrest Gump types on active recovery vs. rest.  I'm struggling with this now.  I realize everyone's ability to recovery and need for rest is different but it seems like there is a trend towards more active recovery or is that driven because people are streaking?

Also, I'm still trying to stick with swimming and biking which is affecting my need to rest vs. active recovery.  I'm getting really tired and had to cut my swim short yesterday and cancel a planned trainer session.

I think it's a very personal thing.

Most days it's best for me to use active recovery but there are times when I need a full day of true rest. That is why I don't get too attached to streaking for streaking sakes.

As to how you make that call? I dunno. It's just a gut feeling. And I think you are already kind of doing it, no?

Also, after big races I generally take two days fully off, then two weeks of non-structured training. Just being active for the joy of it.

My coach says when running competitively, if you don't take planned breaks, you'll eventually end up taking and unplanned break. Smile

Salty, what is a "quality" day?  How many days like that do you do at peak training?
