Ok, I couldn't hang anymore. I'm going home since I still have to get in the pool tonight and go over papers from work. I'll try to do the final reading tonight. Once again glad to be a part of this group.

Good morning, all!  All this talk about new running shoes made my feet jealous, so I went and bought some new ones last night (I had a coupon!).  Bought the same ones that I had, which I looooove.  I don't think they will be ready to run the 12k on Sunday, but I will try them out tomorrow on my scheduled run.  I am signing up for a Jan. 1 5k as a "Clydesdale" (where's the Athenas?) and the race ends with a jump into frigid Lake Washington. Sorry if this is repeat info, I am just freaking out that I am actually going to do that.  LW is cold in the summer, for pete's sake!!

I like Sally Edwards' books, too.  I highly recommend Jayne Williams' "Slow, Fat Triathlete" as well.  It really helped me feel ok about getting out there  to compete even though I wasn't 125 pounds of solid muscle.    She's a member of BT and posts a lot in the Clydes/Athena thread.

Leslie, I TOTALLY missed that the first time I read your post (I was all happy for you and your new shoes, coupon - BONUS!!!)

I can't wait to read your RR from that one BRRRRR!

Note to self: Don't roller blade with leslie, she may be dangerous. LOL

No worries (yet).  . . my goal is to LEARN how to skate this year.  You could still get away from me at this point.  And it's roller skating for the roller derby! (www.ratcityrollergirls.com)  I roller bladed once in college and fell flat on my chest.  Well, not flat.  It was embarrassing!!

This is one prolific group!  I love it! I lurk on here and don't have as much time to post as I would like due to my kids (yes, I blame them for everything....they can go to therapy to deal with that in a few years. Just kidding).  Luckily they love the gym daycare so I can usually get there when I need to.  Made it twice today, once to swim, once to spin!  Gonna try my new shoes tomorrow.  Yay!

Hi, fellow manatees! (I'm sorry, I just can't get that out of my head!)

Beth is our resident Dr. Swim. Her advice is brilliant, well-resourced, and grounded in foundation-to-top experience.

Erin, you have a few other options. Of course if you have the dough, ideally, you'd go ahead and snag a private swim coach, take a Total Immersion (or similar) swim clinic, etc. As a stopgap measure, you could ravenously read everything Beth links you to, snag a used TI book/DVD, pester the lifeguards to see who's a sympathetic soul and competitive swimmer who could critique your stroke, or have someone take a few lengths' worth of video of you swimming and post it here for our review.

Also, Judi (zipp1 of our Puddings team) has had a lot of success with a system; but I forgot which one, so you should post there and ask.

Roller skates rock. Kudos. And Roller Derby LIVES!!!  I never could get used to blades.

I think you'll have huge fun hopping into the lake. Don't be a dipper. These things must be taken all at once. It only FEELS like you've been hit with a baseball bat and can't breathe; actually, you'll be fine . [I'm a member of the Polar Bear Club ...]

Renee  Great news about the running shoes! Makes a huge difference, doesn't it?  I still hate running, but now at least my feet feel good.

I plan on swimming freestyle throughout the swim.  I will be MUCH faster if I stay with freestyle (I'm a slow breaststroker).  I've heard that the majority of racers walk at least some portion of the run...I'm sure that I will be.

It really was nice to have some better shoes! LOL on still hating to run . . . I have a long ways to go to increase speed in any swim stroke, just nice to know the option is there if I need it as I am not nearly so tired when doing breaststroke - it's a great recovery tool for me . . .

Nice to read about your run/walk experience . . . you're definately swaying me to give it a try!

Yanti, thanks for your response to all my questions! As you can see above I will try the run-walk method LOL! Bought the books today . . . seems if I am not working out I may be able to use a little of that time to read!

Thanks also for your input on my upcoming plans. I will sit tight until I can get that schedule settled! I can wait a few more days . . . (trying to convince myself here) haha

Wow, Beth, thank you so much for the thoughtful swim advice. This is great. I know you can't give me specific advice, but you gave me a lot of good stuff to think about.

I did have two lessons with a coach who turned out to be, well, pretty useless (he told me my stroke looked fine -- um, that's nice, but not what I need to hear). But I called today and asked for a new coach for a couple more lessons in January.

Anyway, re: your advice:

-That's a great idea about a tri clinic. I haven't seen anything advertised at my gym, but I'll ask about it, and I'll also check with local tri clubs to see if they know of any clinics in the next couple months.

-I know my kick is terrible -- half the time I don't think I'm even kicking at all. I think I just slacked off on it while I was learning the stroke basics. It's good to know that's something I should keep working on, as I've just recently decided to incorporate it into my regular swims. Thank you for the video links! I will totally check them out (over and over and over again).

-Re: training plans. Honestly, no, I wasn't following one with my swim until very very recently. First I was just learning the basics, and then I went into training for my triathlon and decided I needed to focus on surviving the distance, not speed. Now that my tri is over I really want to work on the mechanics. A week or two ago I put together a training plan that I think works for me (I have three different workouts, the idea being that I'll do each one once a week), with an emphasis on drills, sprints and building strength.

Thank you again, so much. I really appreciate the terrific response!

Man, you guys got busy tonight. Am I the only one who watches Project Runway???

I've been feeling very selfish lately with all my requests for swim advice, but I really am paying attention to everyone else!

Hector: Great to see you here -- and well done on nearly catching up with all the reading. Heh. We do seem to be a chatty bunch. And busy too. I notice folks are pretty active for the off season.

Leslie: Roller Derby! That is so cool! I, um, very briefly considered signing on with the ladies in my area, but man, they are so hardcore. I think I'll just enjoy them from the sidelines.

Renee: Sinus infections suck so much. I was going to suggest you get a little bit of exercise anyway (weirdly, I've found that getting out and walking/jogging clears my head), but I see in your logs that it's an ear infection too, and ugh. That's miserable. Take care of yourself!

Wow i just read the swim info by beth and that was great stuff. I think that is part of my problem on the swim, my kick. I will read more and i guess i also need to learn about kick drills since I haven't done any.

Ok either way I had a good core training session this morning and i will run in the evening. Off to work.

Whew! I go play at Disneyland for the day you guys get all educamaty on me! I will admit to thinking of this group off and on all day and wondering what you were learning. I'm glad to see we're all about the swim right now, since that's what I've been focusing on and loving every hard minute of it.

If it makes you feel any better all last weekend, and every night since (except yesterday) I've been rearranging furniture in 3 rooms of my house too. I vote "yes" on "does it count."
