So funny, I just said to my family (who ignored me) that wow that is a lot of white on that training calander. It is so nice to be in SB where it is a pleasant 68 degees and sunny all day long in the winter, 5 more days until real life crashes back down on me 8).... and I get to try out all the cold weather gear that Santa brought me.

Happy New Year All.

Woohoo!!! I just finished the 5k swim! It actually wasn't that bad. We wore wetsuits, which helped tremendously. The pace was almost exactly 2min/100m and I felt like we held back a bit. Fun times!

The 5k last night went well too. My friends played a little prank on me and told me that tons of people dress in costume. So I got all gussied up in my pink tutu, pink/black lace bustier, and pink wig. Um, yeah, no one else was in costume. But I got lots of attention on the run. :-) And I definitely had "pink tutu power" because I ran a 10:32 pace for a time of 32:45. That's several minutes faster than my PR. Yay!!!

Did everyone else have a fun time ringing in the new year? I'll post race reports and photos later today, but right now I have some serious eating to do...

Happy New Year everyone!

I went out for a run to start the new year. Not my best. I feel that running has really become my weakness, like I sold my running soul to the swimming devil. I keep wondering when I'll get my run back!

YUMMY RECIPIE!

Mock Hollandaise Sauce

1/4 Cup fat free sour cream

1/4 Cup fat free mayonaise

1 teaspoon (or so) lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon (or so) prepared mustard

Milk (optional)

In a small saucepan, combine sour cream, mayo, lemon juice, and mustard.  Cook and stir over medium-low heat until hot.  Thin with a little milk if desired.

I served this over steamed asparagus but it would be yummy on broccoli, cauliflower, or chicken.

This is a much lower fat/calorie alternative to a cheese sauce and much easier to prepare than real hollandaise sauce.

Enjoy!

Nicole -- I know exactly how you feel. I started off focusing on my run because I knew it would be my limiter in the longer triathlons. Now that I've been running, my cycling has suffered. It will come back soon though, I bet.

Thanks for the yummy recipe, Tracy. My boyfriend makes a delicious sauce, but it's full of oil and fat. We'll have to give this a try this week. Despite his resistance to the whole healthy living thing, he did buy me a bunch of healthy cookbooks for Christmas. I'll post any that are super tasty.

Ok -- my race reports with photos are up.

Your races were AWESOME!!!!!  Loved the pictures, too!

You know.....you can add your race distances and times to your log after you have completed a race report.  To do this:

Click "races" at the top of the screen

Click "go to your race log"

Find "copy race data to training log"

Find your race in the drop down list, select it and then click "copy"

I  have biggest issue at like 2 am and I wake up starving and eat  whatever I can get my hands on and go back to bed.  There are not a lot of bad choices in my house but the amount I eat of anything at this time is bad. Since I am still at the very early stage of training and no where close to racing I am worried this going to get worse not better

owl_girl - 2008-01-02 11:43 AM Over the next couple of days, lets talk nutrition. What kind of questions does everyone have?

Since I started triathlon training back at the end of 2006 I've gained something like 10 pounds. Some of it might be attributed to an increase in muscle mass but I doubt it all is. I have a tendency to snack, but I eat pretty well.  Still, I can't seem to lose any weight. I'm 5'5" and about 158#, with a body fat constitution of about 25%, so I think there's room for healthy weight loss. I'd really like to lose about 10 pounds.

My biggest issues directly related to exercise, training, and racing are past problems with leg cramping following long, strenuous bike rides and triathlon runs and concerns about proper calorie intake during rides and triathlons.

I just like to eat. A lot. I try to make healthy choices, but the quantity gets out of control. Really, even 25 carrot sticks with half a container of hummus is a little over the top. I need to find healthy foods that make me feel full. And maybe some distractions to try when I get the urge to stuff my face.

Also, does anyone have problems eating first thing in the morning? Four days of the week my workouts begin at 5am. I leave the house by 4:45 and nothing sounds appetizing. And if I do eat I need to be careful because I have oh-so-lovely GI issues on the longer runs...

By the way, the last couple of days I have REALLY wanted to go eat fast food. But I knew that I would have to put it on my nutrition log and you all would see it. An extra bonus of this support group!

Regarding nutrition, I'd like to know why I can't eat five Crunchy Tacos from Taco Bell then go swim half a mile without feeling nauseas.

Seriously though, I'd like to learn a little more about science of nutrition. When and what to eat before a race, what to eat after a race, what to eat during a race, etc. Right now I live off Gu during a race along with water.

Has anyone tried the drink FRS?

On an interesting note, I run with the Nike + system and it tells me how many calories I burn during a run. I came home after a short 3 mile run to find my 13 year old daughter and her friends complaining about being "fat" (neither of them are)  while scarfing down Pop Tarts. I looked at the box and found out 1 Pop Tart has 200 calories, about what I burn in a mile run (according to Nike +). When I told them how far they had to run to burn off that Pop Tart, they stopped eating them.

i like the FRS drinks and the chews they have i take the chews to races a couple before and after . i use the drinks around here .

i have the same issue as amy i wake up starving no matter what time i eat and its always around 1-2 am. i try to keep something easy like bannanas around . i would rather have a bowl of cereal but i find it upsets my stomach on the morning runs .

my day got set aside do to weather right now florida is freezing . maybe not to some of you but im not getting in the water when the wind chill is down in the 40's . i need to swim though im thinking about checking the gulf temp. grabing the wet suit and hitting the beach . i should do it more offten any ways heck im only 7 miles from it and work less than a mile away you would think i wowuld make it more than i do

As far as waking up and being hungry...I've never had that problem; however, I also eat no earlier than 7pm every night and most nights have fresh fruit salad for desert.

Also, I've decided to take a high protein shake whenever I workout for more than an hour. I had my first one today.

200 cal per mile seems a bit high to me. My treadmill reading for 200 cal is more like 3-4 miles on a run. It is possible that your machine includes motabolism burn post exercize which I think doubles the actual callories burned during the run itself and your pace must be like 6 min mlies or lower to get that high a cal count even doubled. (just guessing).

Hrm. As far as nutrition goes, I simply eat a granola bar or a cheese stick at like every 45 min on longer run/bike rides. If it is only an hour run I don't bother with anything.

I would be interested in hearing more about callorie intake and what folks use for the longer 4-5 hour workouts. On that 60 mile bike ride I had 3 granolla bars (160 cal every 45 min to 1 hour for a total of 480 cal) and had exatly 80 oz of water. I think the water was fine, but I was probably a bit short on the callories for that distance as I was more fatigued than I should have been for the last 15 mlies.

I am also not sure about using like gatoraid or some other drink in the place of water for longer workouts.

As far as pre-exercize foods, if I run within 3 hours of a full meal I risk having some of it threaten to come back up and side cramps. I can have a lite something 10 min before I start with 4 oz of water or so.

I have read some in books and on the boards about very sophisticated things with salts, carbs, gue, etc., but have a really basic t not so basic understanding of how it all fits together.

Like how many callories do you need to consume on a 4-6 hour workout and how do you get that much into your system without getting cramps? I have read you need like 250 to 350 calories, but I usually only do 160 or so, probably to my detriment. I am just now getting into long enough workouts where it is starting to matter, so this is a great topic for discussion.

on my runs up to a hour i dont use anything either . but staying out on the bike longer and doing 2 a days i have found a few things i really like . EFS from frist endurance is my main drink but i will take one bottle of Accelerade also just for a bit of protein . as for more carbs along the way i am between Carbo Pro or Cytocarb II . both are pulling around 230 cals. and 50 grams of slow/med./fast burning carbs. they have no taste and can be mixed with anything like the EFS,amino vital . i say them cause im a big fan of the BCAA'S in both them . out on the run its GU .
Sport Quest also makes the Carbopro 1200 and i have been thinking of trying it . has anyone tried it before ?

It was pretty obvious to me that English is not your first language.  However, I've been able to understand everything. No problems

So, what is your first language?
