I love Shawn Johnson!  She is just awesome   I also like Liukin (sp?)  Her beam exercise last night was so good.  I fell asleep shortly after that though and missed the rest of it.

Hey guys! I too am glued to the tv watching the Olympics whenever I can. Forgive my ignorance, but is that kick they do off the wall in swimming the dolphin kick? Is the rule that they can do it until they need to come up for air? Do you guys ever practice that? It looks tough!

Dolphin kick, yes.... 15 meters I think...

It's when the lane markers change from a solid color to alternating. They implimented that rule because some people were doing it for a LONG time, and it's faster....

Yes, 15 meters...and if you watch when they film phelps do it underwater, you can see one reason why he is so fast, he LITERALLY looks like a dolphin!!!  (he has double-jointed ankles and can hyperextend a toe point beyond 180).  dolphin kick is not easy, try it on a kickboard across the water, it takes serious core strength to be better than flutter.  for me, i'm just better off fluttering

lisazapato - 2008-08-13 1:19 AM does anyone else find shawn johnson just freaking adorable? the marketing machine was right to pick her to focus on.

haha, yeah, she really is. Did anyone read the thread in the Olympic forum about us women's gymnastics being an embarrasment? It really rubbed me the wrong way for some reason.

i just read it!  so maddening!  i had to respond but i am not going to read it anymore, it also really rubbed me the wrong way.

I have been thinking about this the last couple of days (and Jim can attest) that some people just post to get a rise out of others.  I don't give people the satisfaction of a response.  How people can turn, what is seemingly a non threatening or non issue subject, into something controversal is beyond me.  I don't even know how Jim's post about being proud of America turned into racial and prejudicial accusations.  I need to go to the "say something nice" thread now.

Yeah, I know it's just a troll, and his mission was accomplished. But then as I read other people's responses, I was growing more frustrated. Oh well. I won't look at it again .

OK, quick detour to triathon!  .

Lauren - ice baths, revisited.

I'm thinking I'm getting into the area where an Ice bath may be needed.  4 hour bikes and 90 minute runs...  HOWEVER, I have felt fine up to this point....

When did you start implementing them?

Honestly, I should just do it once and see if it makes a difference.  I'm not scared of it, just the additional work keeps me from doing it.  Biking and running are getting hard enough worring about equipement, nutrition, etc.  Don't want to add another item to worry about (buy ice, store it, prepare the bath, etc).  I just want to run.

sorry to ramble.....

No worries. I actually ice bath whenever I can. Seriously, if I have the time and enough cash on me to pick up ice after a 40-min run, I'll do it.

It is kind of a pain. Fortunately, my parents live around the corner from me and have a spare freezer (that can only be used in the summer because it's outdoors). So, I will buy my ice and stick it in there the day (sometimes two days) before the workout I know I'll use the ice for. Try to get into the ice bath as quickly as you can after your workout. If you massage and/or stretch after your workouts, do that before the ice bath .

Hey everyone.

I was out the last day and a half sick (details on my trng log) so I had some catching-up to do and it sounds like there were some real fireworks in BT land.

Lisa, I'm so sorry to hear about your Grandpa.  I'm also so glad you got to see him so recently though too.  I got to say goodbye to one grandfather a few years ago.  Knew it was the last time I'd see him.

Since I'm not allowed to workout until Monday, I'm going to be glued to the television for the next few days.  Can I get a U-S-A chant?

LaurenSU02 - 2008-08-14 6:00 AM G'morning. How is everyone? Lisa, how are you doing?

wazzup....

Feeling a little tired today... I got into watching the games and played a little catchup with the DVR.  Ended up losing track of time and not getting to bed till plast midnight...  Made my 6:00 am start a little rough...

But man, I just get so absorbed in the games!  My wife had not seen the mens 4x100 free relay, so I found it and showed it to her.  THEN proceeded to rewind and stop and start it over and over again, explaining every detail - how people were drafting, how next to IMPOSSIBLE it was for USA to make up a full length in the last 25 yards.  How they crushed the WR, expained the speed suits.  How Phelps is on the all time medal chase for over all golds and golds in one game.  I think I made her a fan!

We both got a kick over how Phelps was cheering and then celebrating - could be one of the "pics" of the games.  I rewound it several times to watch.  When he is bouncing around during that last 25 meters, sees the touch, then has to look at the clock with a unkowing face, then it transforms to a hout of joy - gives me chills every time I see it and when I listen to the call from the announcers...

LaurenSU02 - 2008-08-14 9:00 AM G'morning. How is everyone? Lisa, how are you doing?

I'm ok, thanks for asking.  Functional but flat.

Everyone dies, and if I had to pick a way for my grandpa, this would be it.  Peaceful, painless, kinda sudden (we knew it was coming but he has seemed ok the last few days), after a long and full life, and at home, after just making his food request for the day to my grandma, and after just having spoken to my father (his only son).

In the grand scheme of things, you can't get much better than that.  It's still hard to know that he's gone though.  He was very special to me.

Sad as I feel, I have a lot of peace knowing he went with a lot of peace, and without unfinished business or anything like that.  So I am dealing pretty well, I think .  Thanks.

Back to your regularly scheduled program....

Haha. I know. It was rather priceless. I'm just so upset I've turned into a sissy and fall asleep every night before 10, no matter how hard I try . The Women's all-around is on tonight! YAY!!

Hey Lisa,  In Mexico, they call that a Gentleman's Death.  Where you are surrounded by your family and friends.

I just lost a friend of mine who I work with last weekend (Thyroid Cancer) and he had all of his family around the weekend before for a living wake and they told stories and laughed and cried and drank.  He told us how happy he was about that party.  He was only 58.

Hey guys, well I can't wait to watch more of that swimming! I try to learn from it but I can't record it and its way too fast for me to catch details. Track and field must be starting soon, I need to check out the schedule. I'm real excited to see that also.

Hope you're feeling better soon Matt! That sounds like quite a scare!

My knee saga continues. I got the MRI results and they told me there's nothing obvious and I should take it to an ortho/sports doc. I have an appointment tomorrow, so I really hope I learn somthing. Sadly I can honestly say that it doesn't feel any better after 5 weeks.

I'm so happy for Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson.. yay!  Unfortunately I fell asleep around 11:45 or so and didn't get to see the whole thing.  Just too late for me!  I'm surprised I made that long

How bad is it though that because her name is so Russian, she probably won't get the kind of attention that Shawn Johnson from Iowa gets?

I didn't catch any of it but I just heard this morning and thought it was funny how they said on the radio, "Russian-Born-American Nastia Liukin edged out All-American Girl Shawn Johnson."

So, is she Russian or American? Last I checked, she's from Plano, TX...

Claire, Sorry to hear about the MRI.  I figured they'd be able to find something since you've been in so much pain.  Maybe try accupuncture or something.

You know, we had a guy in our squadron who swore he had a torn ACL even though the Doctors told him that nothing was showing on the MRI or anything else.  But he eventually got cleared to have a scope and they found...a torn ACL...Medicine ain't perfect yet.

Ahh.. an answer at last! Saw the sports/ortho doc this morning. He said my problem was my lateral plica... this is the "appendix" of the knee. Mine proceeds to be continually inflammed which is causing all the pain. He gave me an anti-inflammatory cream to put on it, a knee brace to wear during exercise and showed some exercises to do every day. I can do low-impact exercise if the pain is not too bad. He said this may or may not clear up. 10-15% with this problem need it surgically removed.
