TyIslander - you were a "bike catcher" last year? Can you explain? Thanks

Last year I was a spectator, this year I'm volunteering.  Here's the description of "Bike Catcher" from the IMKY site.
Description:
This job requires LOTS of physical activity. Please do not sign up for it if you have any physical limitations at all. As the athletes finish the bike portion of the event, they bring their bike to you. It is your job to quickly get their bike back to the proper location on the bike racks. Be aware, some athletes will literally roll their bike to you at a high speed. Others will come to a complete stop and gently hand their bike to you. Just be ready for lots of activity!!!

I assuming mandatory briefing is really not 'mandatory'.....besides - how could one be more briefed than being on this site  Laughing

Any other opinions?

I e-mailed and asked. The reply I got back said not to worry about missing the briefing. Instead they said to read the guide carefully and ask any questions I have at check-in.

My take on it was that I'm responsible for knowing the rules and race logistics whether I show up for the briefing or not.

Hey everyone,
I've been reading your comments and have decided to join in. Hope this works. I did IMKY in 2007 (the inaugural year) and had so much fun, I'm going back! My training is much less than what you guys have been posting. Today was my hardest to date, with a run/bike/run/bike plan that ended up with 83 miles on the bike and maybe 14 miles of running. The bike was fine but the second run was awful. Nothing hurt, so I think it was the heat. Luckily I had training partners suffering along with me. Taper starts soon.

TYISLANDER- Thank you for volunteering this year.  We appreciate all that you do.

RACE BRIEFING NOTES:  I too was likely NOT going to go to the Welcome Dinner...or whatever it's called, but then saw the mandatory meeting.  Thank your for looking into this.  I think I will bypass both.  HOWEVER, if you have not done an Ironman, I would recommend doing both to get the full experience.  This way you won't wonder what you might have missed.

TRAINING: Completed my 12.4 mile run yesterday with my awesome wife who is training for the Grand Rapids Marathon in October.  One more long run to go.  Good work to all who are still going strong.

Kids were registered for a triathlon today.  Rained out.  They'll have to do it at our lake to earn their very cool technical t-shirts.

Peace,
~Sam

This is very very true.  I did bike catching last year, and am doing it this year along with chip retrieval at the finish line as well.  Most will jump off and be running with bike at you pretty fast.  Some even push it or roll it to you and you have to be ready.  I wouldn't for anything want to drop one of those bikes.  I know I wouldn't be so happy if someone dropped mine   You then have to rack the bike on the rack in the appropriate spot and run right back to the line to catch more.  When the first few come through its not so bad, but then watch out.....its like everyone all at once.  Its crazy and fun all at the same time.  Now why won't someone catch mine in one of my sprints?  HA HA!!

Last long bike in today 101 miles....Nasty winds at 15-25mph all day long....Lots and lots of hills and at 6am it was 87 degrees.  Got up to 101F before i finished with a heat index of 108 or so.  Anyway I keep telling myself that i had all the bad elements today and it can't be worse than this at louisville.  Taper starts this week....Woohoo!!

Finished my last long ride today.  My legs are aching.  Soooo glad taper is next.

It was hot for the first time in 1.5 months, and  I rediscovered that nothing tastes better than a bottle of cold water in the middle of a hot, long ride!

I was in Louisville yesterday for work, what a nice day, 81 degrees. Short run and I went down to the river to check it out. No sign at all the place was flooded 3 days earlier. River was way high and full of junk, logs, tires and other trash. I'm not sure of the normal current, but it was moving. After the turn, you could tread water and ride it to the finish. Good luck with the final training.  Jim

Damn...sorry to hear that GP160.  I'm just back 90% from my AC separation at the end of June from a spill on the bike.  I've only been back swimming for a couple weeks.   Please everyone be careful out there.  I'll be looking for those Day glow shirts in L-town.

Well......150 in the bag....very hot day and I feel GREAT for having gotten it done....legs feel o.k. and I am very glad I left the running shoes at home on purpose....legs were itching to run!!

Heat Index was reported down to 100 as we finished...good heat acclimation exercise!

Anyone else thinking about joining the gang at "The Pub"?  I got a couple of PRIME outside tables reserved!!!  With a couple of those BT Shirts holding the spots we could really make a scene!!

Stay healthy everyone, I don't want to hear about anymore crashes or injuries!!

Paul

That is horrible I am so sorry. I couldn't imagine getting this far and then have it taken away like that.

Hey all, first off sorry to read about those of you who have been injured/crashed/etc. over the last couple of weeks.  We're thinking of you!

We're officially three weeks out.  Just curious... what does your training plan call for (in terms of hours) for the next couple of weeks?  What are you planning to do with your free time?  Anyone pick up any new hobbies?

I don't plan on starting to taper until 2 weeks out so I have another week to go until my hours drop.

Today, during my ride (when I wasn't dodging lightning or fixing flat tires) I was thinking that it sounds like everyone is brining family and/or friends with them to the race. Maybe during my taper I will see I can find anyone that wants to hang out with me in Louisville.

Due to family stuff yesterday only got in 42 miles on the bike instead of 100 and today I did not fair well in the heat on my run. Only got in 2 hours of 2:30. Makes me a little nervous about the heat on race day. I am hoping it was just a bad day.
