I notice a few sick days slowing folks down in the last few post.  I am proud to say despite many flu/cold/sick issues all over work and here at home effecting almost everyone - I am 2 years sniffle/fever/aches free.  I am like a lot  others working 40-60 hours a week and training 12-15 hours a week also.  I attribute some of this lack of sickness to eating well.  However, I have done that in the past and still contracted the once or twice a year cold etc.  I attribute the difference to relgiously taking a multivitamin.  I do not know if it is the antioxidant effect of vitmain E or the immune modulation of zinc.  Truth be told, I do not care. I take 7 premium insurance tabs (hammer nutrition) daily though.  Take it for what its worth

I don't get sick a lot either, I attribute it to
Washing my hands thoroughly after being at the gym or pretty much anywhere
Costco Multi-vitamin and
Eating what my wife feeds me  (she cooks HEALTHY)

Best of luck to everyone to stay healthy!

I was messing around today and found this link to qualifying times per AG for all the IMs. The slowest Kona male 40-44 qualifier was 10:08 so I am out. Perhaps you have a chance? If not, look here to see how far off you will be 8)

Figured I'd join the bandwagon and post my numbers for last month:

Running:  87.7 miles.   This included a taper for my first half marathon that I did in 1:50:17 the day after riding my first century.   I was pretty happy with that, but I did start getting some IT pain that I'm nursing right now.   My next half is on the 13th, and I'm shooting for sub 1;45.

Bike:  306 miles.   I'm finally starting to enjoy riding my bike...even on the trainer.

Swim:  4750yds.  This is the easy part for me, so as long as I get 1 day in the pool a week, I'm good to go.   I'll start ramping it up  the end of April

I would have guessed 10:30 or so.  Yea, I may be near mile 13 on the run by that point.  I guess there is always the lottery.

That means I gotta do 10:48 (M50-54).  That seems impossible, however, just musing over the required split times:

S: 1:15

T1  :08

B: 5:45

T2  :07

R: 3:45

-------------

11:00

Seems pretty hard for an old man.

Are you planning to take a nap in T2?  If you plug T1 = 6 minutes and T2 = 2 minute then this will get you down to a 10:53.

Wow, that formula would get me there.  What am I doing here on this forum?  I need to get on my BIKE!!!  Averaging nearly 20 mph over 112 miles and what, 3000 feet of climbing?  Oy.

Oh wait, that's right.  I'm just going to try to finish the thing

I think it was rocketman, phatknot, and josh who had discussed race planning so well in prvious post.  You guys that are close to KQ need to think about real race planning.  there was a post earlier about DQ for children in the finishers shoot.  I have 3 little angels that could be talked into rushing out and yelling mommy or Daddy for a cookie or 2.  I am sure there are enough children on this thread to hookup those of you who are close.  I am afraid that we would have to ask a large elementary school to come out for me to get a spot.  Happy training

thanks kstater39 but im totally fine with no KQ. Josh was after it hard, but my ego is already too big haha.If i was after it, thats a great idea though!

Seriously, at the SeeMe expo I was with this group and they were all talking about their goals for the sport and almost to a number they were to KQ. I said my goal was NOt to go to Kona qualify. My goal was to be able to eat cookies and cake whenever I wanted 8)

They all were looking at me like I was a slow learner or something. But seriously, this is a fun lifestyle for me. I could care less about Kona. If it happens, it happens, and then i will feel obligated to go like I did with Boston. Thats not really fair to all those who try their whole life for Kona (Boston) but thats how I roll.

And for all of you first timers, my goal at 2009 IMAZ was to finish without an IV. Last year at IMFL the goal was to have a satisfying race. This year the goal is the enjoy the day and do the best I can given my training/injury profile and the conditions. What are your goals for race day?

Dude - My goals are exactly the same - train my a$$ off for it & then enjoy the day.  The hard work will be over by the starting line.  Besides, if I don't train every day, I just don't feel right.

Ha ha -- I sort-of feel the same way re: KQ, although I am NOWHERE close. But to me, racing in Kona would be akin to sticking hot needles in my eyes... I LOATHE heat. I'm a total heat wuss. It breaks me down like nothing else. Hate it.

And when (non-triathlete/non-runner/non-athletic) friends ask how/why can/do I train so much I always say, "So I can eat dessert every night and still fit into my jeans." There is an element of truth to that, but like you, I just enjoy the lifestyle. I think I am most happy in my life when I have a training plan in front of me and know what I will be doing for the next 4-6 months on any given day. Juggling the family and life's curve balls just adds to the challenge and fun.

My race-day goal is to execute my run to the best of my ability. Last year the heat (see above re: my feelings about heat) really mucked with me and caused me major tummy upset on the run. No, I did not overcook my bike, but in hindsight I likely took in too many calories on the bike given the heat and perhaps should have switched sugar sources later in the ride (I was all malto, have since learned that on a stressed system it can be hard to absorb malto and dex may be a better choice). Many people from this neck of the woods (Seattle) found the race-day heat a bit tricky to work with, as we had an unusually cold and wet spring and I did not have ONE training day where I got to experiment with warm conditions. Last year I wasn't even sore the day after the race, because I had to walk during the run until my tummy settled down. Once it did I was good to go and all well well in my world, but I had a few dark miles before that happened.

I'll have three kids there as well, that can take out three of someone's competitors! Maybe they could even circle back and pick off some more.  Laughing

Why wait until the last minute and let your shot at Kona come down to the wire.  I'm going to have my kids set up an unoffical aid station on the bike.  Figure I can get half the field DQ with a little outside assistance.

A new purchase for The Road to CDA!:

New Wetsuit!  First open water swim for 2011 on Sunday!  Psyched to see how things go.  Just a 2XU C:2 but exciting for me!

Also found out my sister just bought her plane flight from CT to see me pull this off, so the pressure is on!

. What are your goals for race day?

I hope to raise 10,000 for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.  3,169.00 and counting!!

I always say my goal is to finish.  However, I will know about what I am capable if things go perfect.  Things will not go perfect and I will post race analize and be ok with the race if I overcame the challanges in an effective way.  I will not be so time focused to change my plan but I will be mindful of it.  I do not think I will know what I am capable of until mid May.  The number will be nowhere near a KQ.  But for me that number and overcoming the obstacles are as important as KQ is for others.

I hope to take the first step into the fringes of human possibility.  I really enjoy seeing what my body can do.  So far it has adapted to what I have pushed it into.  I plan on pushing more.  I do not know where it will take me.  Silverman will be next if this journey goes well and is fun.  Then I do not know.  If 26 miles is all good then 50k and on up the ladder.  I stopped believing in limits a year or so ago.  I believe in the possiblity of being hammered by the day, the race, external factors, or choosing not to pursue an endevor due to time commitment (badwater - crazy)  but not in limits.

I'm right there with you! I love having a plan in front of me to execute against. My 1st IM my goal was to get to the starting line and hopefully finish by midnight (I did!), my 2nd IM it was to leave it all on the course (I did!). This IM I'm coming off of 2 years with an injury, some weight gain and virtually no structured training so my goal is again to get to the starting line. If I make it to the starting line in 1 piece, happy and healthy then I'll just have fun throughout the day and hope for the best!

Goal #1:  Finish

Goal #2:  Finish with a smile

Goal #3:  Finish under 13 hours

Goal #4:  Finish faster than my little brothers time in his first IM:  12:22:02.   He's the uber-athlete of the family (and gotten much faster in the last 3 years), but I'd love to be able to brag about besting his first time.  :D

Anybody else doing this race with another member of their family?  My dad and I are both racing.   My first, his second (after IMSG last year being his first)

Dude, you rock! Thanks for supporting some amazing heroes like that!!

I'm not sure what my goals are yet....I think I'll know more after some more hard training.  My first goal is ALWAYS to have fun, and to give my all on any given day. Sometimes that's faster than others.  I would like to KQ someday,  but when that day is, I don't know..maybe when I'm in the 50+ ladies age group, haha!  But we'll see...I'm still not sure I'm much of a climber on the bike, so that may be a weakness for me.  I doubt I'll beat my IMAZ time at IMCdA, but as close as I can get to 11 or lower, the better...but really, it's all about having fun.  I'm also racing for charity--Team Red, White, and Blue (Team RWB) (BT will be learning more about this very soon--exciting developments)--and it's for raising awareness about wounded vets as much as it is for funds. I spend a great deal of my spare time helping grow the triathlon side of Team RWB, so I feel like I'm out on the course as ambassador of my fellow comrades.  Our motto is, "It's Our Turn." I plan to motivate on that come race day.  And did I mention have fun.   I have a house walking distance from the finish line--should be a blast!
