Thanks to everyone who has been sending me good vibes (love the inspires!).  Seeing to chiro tomorrow, but judging how the leg felt this AM, I'm probably off running for at least a couple weeks.  To be continued...

1st ride on new bike!! I picked it up last night and rode 12.5 miles this morning. I met up with the team, but did not ride with them. Saturdays are the serious and advanced cyclists. They were split into three brick groups 45/4, 40/3, and 28/2. I can't run yet because of the tendonitis anyway, but it was good to see them. They inspire me. 25 super athletic types. Coach taught me how to downshift... and I practiced clipping in an out.... these are some tight clips! I road around virginia key and back home across the key biscayne bridge. All at sunrise!

Injuries suck but my IT band taught me to;

-Stretch after every workout.  No excuses.  Yoga is cool.
-Use rollers every day.  They rock.
-Heed my body...it tells me what I need to know.  Acute pain, stop.

So you ran a marathon and an ultra the next day.  You rock.

Met with my coach about planning.  Looks like some trips to Madison for practice rides and a weekend that includes  swimming and running too and likely the Racine 70.3 in early August.  No training like a race, he says.
June, sprint; July, oly; August, half; September IM, plus some century rides, Madison visits.  Busy year.
Need to get a new sleeveless wetsuit, and test out nutrition plan.

Hard bike 2.5 hours and 1 hour brick run today, shorter intense ride tomorrow and maybe a swim if there's time.

Have a great week.

Corncub - 2011-02-18 8:26 PM ingleshteechur, you might appreciate this little bit of insanity,  my daughter (4yrs old) climbed up on my bathroom sink, got hold of some nail polish and proceeded to use it as eye shadow tonight. Big horrible mess. there was a moment where I  thought I was going to have to take her to the emergency room but I washed her eye out and shes ok. The nailpolish (silver) is stuck in her eyebrow, will probably be there for a couple of weeks.

I love it!  That is priceless.  I'm glad she's OK though...however, I'm guessing that will become a family joke for the next 80 years!  Love the fact that a little four year old sweetie is walking around with a silver eyebrow! Smile

So the doc says the problem originated in my hip flexors, even though I didn't originally feel the pain there.  I do have groin pain now in addition to the pain in the quad.  He explained it all to me and I understood everything and it did make sense, but I can't seem to explain it now.  I had 45 minutes of Active Release Treatment (OUCH) and have to do some stretching. Only thing I find confusing is I don't' have pain when cycling (or stair climbing) and everything I've read about hip flexor strains says that cycling can aggravate things.  Doc didn't tell me to stop cycling. He said I should not run for a few days and then when I do try again, if I feel any pain, STOP.  I have more questions now that I've done some research.  I'm seeing him next Sat.

Meanwhile I'm missing valuable training time for the marathon and it's causing me great angst. The rational part of me says...you have a good base, when you heal you can get back in there and run the race.  May have to readjust my goal for the race to...JUST GET THERE and not worry about time.

The obsessive, competitive part of me hates missing the training and worries greatly about my time.

Big sigh.....

Yeah I'm told my IT band probably originated in weak glutes...go figure.  Having been through this my advice is to listen to the dovtors...which is why you pay them.  Error on the caution side.  Keep in mind that if you push too hard trying to eek out a little more fitness you could blow more than a race...you could blow your year.  Easy does it.  Heal, let the treatments do their job.  Work on your aerobics by swimming if they said you could do that.  Light bike workouts to stay loose...called active recovery.  But listen to them about the running.  If you push too hard now, the result could be disaster.  It is hard, I know,m but do what you can and let yourself heal.  I had to be smart.  Worked for me so far and lots of good things came out of the experience as a result. A commitment to stretching, yoga, foam rollers.  More attention to rest days, easy workouts when they are called for...Lots of good writing out there about the importance of easy runs at times. .

Ice Man and Susie, this is all very interesting.  First off sorry to hear about the past and current injuries, they are no fun and hard to get over.  I've had some myself.  I do find them interesting though because I'm currently taking classes to get a degree in Wellness and Fitness which will prep me for NASM's personal trainer exam and the chapter we just covered was flexibility and how one 'shortened' muscle can mess with the entire kinetic chain causing injury because of compensations (flexibility dysfunctions).  This sounds like a little of maybe is what is going on from what you described that your doctor said.  It's not nice to know you are injured but it is reassuring to know that what I'm learning is practical.  I hope things start looking up very soon!  I'm sending healing vibes your way!

Took my new bike down off the trainer, and put that bad boy to the test today.  Put 24 miles on it outside.  May not be any faster than my aluminum frame bike on a windy day like today, but feels like a Corvet where as the old bike felt like a Chevet.  Slow speeds feels the same but once you get her past 20 mph, she starts to purrr like a kitten

Isn't the new bike FEEL so good? 'Course I can now join the sore butt club! I actually got kind of scared yesterday the way the carbon just flies and I could barely feel the bike under me! Whew!

That's whats going on with me.  Even though I wasn't feeling the pain in the hip area, that initial strain or over use caused  me to compensate until I began to feel pain in the muscles that connect to to the flexor.  If your hip is weak then the other major muscles will take over to provide stability, balance, power, etc.   At the end of my last run on Thursday it felt as if I was dragging a a log.  My leg was dead weight with no power.

I took yoga today.  A first for me.  I figured the stretching etc would be good.  I enjoyed it and decided that I'm taking off of everything this week: cycle, run, maybe even swim (or swim with the pull bouy so no kicking)  I will do a little bit of stairs since I have the stair climb next Sunday.  I will take yoga, do strength and core workouts.  I want to see if eliminating the cycling will speed recovery.  Most people look at me like I'm crazy when I say this will be hard for me to do, but hopefully you all understand where I'm coming from.   Should be a taper week for the stair climb anyway, right?

Make sure you always have i.d.!

You never know when you'll need it.  I got hit 1-1/2 years ago and woke up in the back of the ambulance not knowing what month it was.  They used it to call my wife who was two hours away and wouldn't have known for hours.

Happy Sunday McFuzzies!  This morning I completed the Ft. Lauderdale 1/2 marathon!  I planned on completing the full, but for various injury related issues I decided to knock it down to the half.  I'm disappointed that i couldn't run the full, as injury and sickness stopped me from completing the last marathon i planned to run too Frown  I have had a injury riddled marathon season and am glad it is now over so I can concentrate on healing and triathlon!

If you're interested, here is the link to my race report http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... />
Hope everyone is having a great President's DAy weekend of training!

Happy Sunday!  Don't beat yourself up too much.  You did something most people will never do.  Most people I know in my friends, family and work colleagues never will do a half marathon.  So, good for you!

I just finished a nice 15 mile run myself.  Longest since my races in early Jan.  Felt really gooood.   Take care!

Just echoing what the above have said.  And to add..if you have a Road ID....MAKE SURE YOU PUT IT ON!  Make it habit.
Since I have medical issues I have the interactive one.
