For some unknown reason, I was wide awake at 4am this morning. So I put the TV on and caught the end of the gymnastics final. It's almost as if I subconciously knew that there was something great going on!

Ahh.. an answer at last! Saw the sports/ortho doc this morning. He said my problem was my lateral plica... this is the "appendix" of the knee. Mine proceeds to be continually inflammed which is causing all the pain. He gave me an anti-inflammatory cream to put on it, a knee brace to wear during exercise and showed some exercises to do every day. I can do low-impact exercise if the pain is not too bad. He said this may or may not clear up. 10-15% with this problem need it surgically removed.

So when/how did it occure again?  During your race?

I've had managable on and off knee issues for a long time while I was training. I think the race really aggrevated things. Its hard to pinpoint the cause other than the way my knee joint is built and also having a tight ITB. Personally, i think I built up too fast on a new bike/pedals while also doing all the running and this was more than my knee could handle. Even though I followed all the plans and schedules I don't have much of a bike background so it was still too much too soon.

Guess I'm not the only one, found this thread: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=83756&posts=6&highlight=plica&highlightmode=1#M904781

Wow, Shiggy! I am glad you finally have an answer. Is it something that will be made worse (i.e., could tear, rupture, etc.) by training, or is it really just an issue of pain management?

Well I was told it would not do anything bad to my knee by training on it, it will just hurt more. It is like an ITB thing, but it is actually a band of scar tissue that has no function in the knee joint. I need to go back in 5 weeks if it still hurts and get a cortisone shot. Then if it still hurts they cut it out of there. I'm skeptical of the whole thing but thats just me.

So what did you guys think of the big swim race last night? Is winning by .01 sec even possible? That just sounds crazy to me. I think they should race it again

I did!! How was yours??

Well except for my feathers being ruffled a little bit when beach volleyball was called recreational in one of the threads.. hehe

Did you guys see the womens marathon?  I thought it was pretty cool they showed as much of it as they did.  The Olympic stadium was packed for the finish too!

Mine was good too. haha...about the beach volleyball.

Yes, it was great they showed so much of the marathon. That must've been so cool running into the stadium with such a huge crowd. You don't get that too often in a marathon. And, it was great for the Chinese to see one of their own battle it out for second...

Hey guys!  Sorry I havn't been around much.  There has been way too much going on in my life.  I barely have time to get on the computer.  I log my workouts and get off.  How has everyone been doing with all of the Olympics coverage.  I'm enjoying it!

Lauren,

Some doubts have creeped in (maybe not doubts, but thoughts).  Thank goodness they haven't turned into full blown neuroisis yet!

It's early in the plan, so I have time to get better, but after a long swim, and especially after a long bike, I evaulate how I feel.  I can't think of one time that I swam 3500-4000 yards and get out of the pool looking forward to a 112 mile bike and marathon.

It's worse after the bike.  I get done with 50-60 miles on the bike, and I may not feel bad persay, but do I feel like running a marathon?  Far from it...

Do you EVER feel energized after a long swim or bike and ready to tackle the next thing?  Or is it just a matter of survival and perseverance?

How many weeks to go?

And, no worries, I never once finished a swim or run wanting to (or feeling like I could) bike 112 miles after or run 26.2. I was usually tired; not dead, but certainly not up for a few more hours of training. It's mental too; you know what you have to do (e.g., 5-hr ride), so you do it and you're body is ready to stop once it gets to that point at which you had prepared it to stop. Just make sure you're nailing your nutrition and not doing what you need to do to get through the ride, but doing what you need to do to come off the bike feeling strong.

Hi guys, I've had an eventful weekend, I just submitted a paper that is important for my grad career to a conference and i can only hope now that it gets accepted.  had to just put my head down and do that, but it's done.

as for beach volleyball - that looks HARD!!!  it looks way harder than regular volleyball too (not that that is remotely "recreational" either).  two people, running around on SAND, covering that entire space?  you have got to have some serious stamina for that!

i felt bad for paula radcliffe on the marathon.....

Well I think staying up late watching the Olympics finally caught up to me last night.  I went out for a short run to break in some new shoes and I felt I was laboring through the whole thing.  Got home, felt a bit nauseas and couldn't get my HR down.  I think I was either really worn out or I am getting sick.  I was sleeping at 9:30 and got up at 7:30.  I hope I am not getting sick.  I have my first Oly race on Sun.  Plus, I may have tweaked what I think is my ITB.  I will be taking it easy this whole week.    Anyone else racing this weekend?

How do you feel this AM, BB?

The ITB will heal up with your taper this week. Just make sure you're stretching and massaging it .

Glad you're feeling better Boston!  I'm racing on Sunday too.  It'll probably be my last tri of the season..   The race I was going to do in Sept was cancelled (well made into an aquathon) because they couldn't get the permit for the bike course.  ggrrr.  I'm looking forward to the race on Sunday because my parents are going to come.  This will be their firt tri experience!

COOL! Good luck!!

What race were you looking to do in September? I am hoping to do one or two tris that month and have my eye on a few (mostly south of me)...was wondering if one of the one's I was looking at is the one made into the aquathon.

The Annapolis Tri   I was considering Make-A-Wish, but honestly I'm nervous about the ocean swim.  I don't like waves.  Well... once I get past the breaking point, I'm OK.  I just don't like getting in!  Have you ever done a tri with an ocean swim?  Am I being a chicken?

I am considering Make-a-Wish too, but I don't like salt water and sand. LOL. I've never done a tri with an ocean swim, but I did do a 1-mile ocean swim race. It was fine. You just run in and dive through the waves; it wasn't too bad once I got out past the the breakers. Our swim was along the shore, though. They had trucks take us a mile down the beach, so we just swam a mile along the shore. Sighting is tough because the waves block your line of sight, but overall not bad. My time for the distance was right where it should have been.

Got up early to swim!  Woot!  It sucked, but I did it...  I don't think I'm EVER going to enjoy early morning workouts.  I feel so tired and lithargic and training feels like a struggle.

Nice to be done with it though before the day starts!

You'll get used to it. I feel tired and lethargic if I DON'T get up and train before work .

I felt great afterwards, but it took me about 2000 yards to feel like I was swimming rather that trying NOT to sink....

Speed work right out of bed?  forgedaboudit....

For me, it's usually 40 mins between waking up and hitting the water, which I think is fine. Although, I do always wonder if I would have better speed sessions if I swam in the evening. I just HATE my pool at night. They have 3 lanes open, sometimes you get your own, sometimes you don't. But we also have a whole kid pool with water slides and such. Sooo, there's hundreds of screaming kids running around, and a lot of them use the diving board which sits between lanes 4 and 5. If you're swimming in lane 3, it sucks. You swallow water, they startle you, kids pop up in your lane, etc. If you're in lane 1, you're closer to the kid's pool, so you get balls thrown at you, etc. It's madness I tell you. Madness!

Ick.

No kids at my gyms.  I don't think I can handle that.  Just a random person once or twice a year that doesn't understand pool/lap swim etiquette.
