you know how you have a list of things you are looking for in a potential mate? You compile this through the series of boyfriends.. I've recently added the following:

Must know MORE about cars than me.

How difficult is that?

mm.. not at all if you're mechanically inclined and cars interest you

Uh, define mechanically inclined. I really enjoyed working on cars. Rebuilt an engine for one, then due to not knowing all the parts you should replace when rebuilding a motor shattered the flywheel while doing doughnuts (engine and trans separated.) Had another one catch on fire. Carburetors weren't my thing, either. I gave up after that.

huh... no comment

You can only learn so much by reading a book.  And you can only fix so much on a $500 truck before you realize there was a good reason that it was a $500 truck.

I've seen people turn $500 piles into very fast race cars.

And those people weren't trying to figure out how to make race cars out of them by reading a repair manual.  No one else in my family had ever done more than an oil change, and I was a 16yr old with a ratchet set.

Literally.  Among other things, I also didn't realize how often you had to check header bolts.  Got to school one morning when it was especially loud, opened the hood, realized both headers had fallen off.

I will end with another poll: What is your favorite piece of Industrial Equipment..

I always liked skid-loaders.  I know, not a huge piece of industrial equipment, but very useful for many jobs.

Wowsers. I've checked my header bolts exactly NEVER times. That's not somethign I should worry about after installation.

Knowing is half the battle, right?

Dang, they went fast.  At that price, no wonder.  I already have a pair of M-frames though.

HA!  I used to work on cars.  Not anymore.  Anything made before 1985 I could practially take apart and rebuild, without much help.  On my old cars I replaced, starters, alternators, water pumps (that was a beyotch), brakes, shocks, struts, tires, carbs, and even helped a friend do his tranny.  Now, with all the wiring, etc, don't want to touch anything but the gas cap.

Had a '78 Ford F-150 with a Modified Cleveland, Blackjack headers and dual straight exhaust with glass paks and no catalytic converter.  That bad boy SOUNDED a lot faster than it really was.

HA, I bet that sounded good. How the HELL do header bolts come loose, though? It's usually the opposite, you can't get the bastards to break loose without snapping.

I didn't realize a few things:

1.) Motor mounts need to be replaced if they're old and brittle.  If you don't the engine shakes.

2.) If you cant get an engine in completely level, hammering the mount bolts through the mounts and figuring that that's taken care of isn't a good job.

3.) Loctite exists for a reason.

4.) Just because you don't have the tool to get to that tough to reach bolt doesn't mean that that tool doesn't exist.

So what's the difference between mtb gloves and road gloves?
