Good morning everyone.

I was still up at 3:00 a.m. last night. I am overly stressing about this new job prospect. The result was that I didn't wake up until 7:30 this morning, and I have a 7:50 a.m. class!!! I was a mad woman trying to get the boys up and out the door with me by 7:43 -- no shower, no makeup (although I did take time to wash my face). The boys had to eat a small bag of pretzels and a small bag of Star Wars gummies for breakfast on the playground. Yikes. Bad, bad, mommy.

Then by time I got to class, passed back graded quizzes, handed out the new quiz, my head was still spinning. I could see that after people finished their quiz, they pulled out material from other classes to study. (Midterms are this week). So I just let them all go. I said, "I really am not feeling well. We can cover this material on Tuesday. Why don't you all just go and study for your tests." I think I could get Professor of the Year for that one! They were so appreciative. lol

I have got to get some sleep. Frown

Sorry about your rough night/morning Felicia. Mine was about as crazy.

Left work yesterday planning to go home and squeeze in a 12 mile ride before Bible study. Hot home and DS1 had put a nice gash in his hand with a power tool. So I took him to urgent care. Well a few hours and several stitches later we got home. No ride, no Bible study. Funny thing, I'm a trained first responder and not normally bothered by blood or wounds. Only when it's my kids'. So after sitting with him while he got stitches I wasn't hungry, so barely ate.
Then one of dogs proceeded to puke all night so after getting up with him every hour or so I wasn't feeling a ride (or breakfast) this morning either.

This has been one of those sucky training weeks. Still psyched about the race tho!!!!

I just ran a smokin' fast 10K at lunch today.  Warmed up with 1/2 mile, then started at somewhere between 5K and HM pace, finished 6.2 miles in 45;14.  I've never run an open 10K before but that was a 7:18 pace average!  Whohoo.  I had a 1:00 meeting right after lunch so I ran a little faster than I normally would, this was supposed to be my mid-week long run in prep for the Nov 18th marathon I signed up for.

I'll be a runnin' fool turkey for the next 6 weeks in preparation for the Gobbler Grind Marathon.

SMOKIN'!!!  (italicised to show speed)

Sorry to hear Jo, Felicia and TJ are all having less than great nights/days.  Hopefully they all turn around and offer up some bright spots, too.

Weather for my tri has now moved to downright awful.  High of 55, 70% chance of rain.  At the rate the forecast has been going, it will be even colder and wetter until the day arrives, but I'm still hoping for some miraculous turnaround.  Any words of wisdom from the pod?  I know to be careful on the bike in the rain, mainly painted areas and metal things and cornering.  I think I'm mainly worried about staying warm and executing as good a race as possible given the conditions.

I'm with ya Mel. Based on the cold race threads in TT I am considering using a jacket instead of sleeves. I have a new one with zip off sleeves but I've never ridden with it. I might bring it along and try to get a ride in and try it out before the race.

As to the cold I can't really offer advice but being a little chilly at the beginning of the bike would be tolerable for me so I'd just go with arm warmers that I could remove later on.  Riding in the rain, well, I learned the hard way that it can be quite dangerous.  At my last sprint tri it rained during the bike and I simply took it easy.  What that did though was allow me to have a terrific run.  There was lots of energy left for the run which made for a great finish.

A run would suck if you're doing so with tears on your clothes and road rash etc.

I did a tri last September with air temperature at about 50, and I put on a long sleeved shirt in transition (which I wouldn't recommend because I had to take it off after I had warmed up on the bike.) What I do recommend, however, is something to cover your ears. Maybe my ears are especially sensitive, but if I'm wet, and then riding in the cold, my ears get very very very uncomfortable.

I don't remember if the swim is OW or pool, but mine last September was a lake swim, and it was amazing. The water was actually warmer than the air temperature, so even though it was technically wet suit legal, most of us did not bother. Going from the cold, foggy air, into the warmer water was just amazing. So much easier than going into cold water when it's 90 degrees outside. (At least for me it was).

Yeah, there is lots of good manatee advice already for the cold wet weather.

If it were me, I would go with the arm warmers (if even those.) If you are wearing a jacket and it's not waterproof, depending on how much it's raining it will get all bogged down and actually make you even colder.

I think you should at a minimum try all of your options and make a decision then. I wouldn't try anything for the first time at the race. Chances are, you will be cold in the beginning but after about a mile or so you will warm up. And if you don't, just peddle harder Wink

First off, you are prepared for this event.  You've put in the work and you will be able to execute your plan.  I hate that the weather is not cooperating for you!

Last year at Beach2Battleship it was windy, rainy and 58.  Not the weather I envisioned for my first full IM, that's for sure!

What do you plan to wear in the swim?  Sports bra and tri shorts under a wetsuit?  Then add a dry (however temporary) top layer in T1?

For B2B I wore arm warmers, cycling jersey and vest on top with smartwool socks, to covers and fingerless bike gloves.  This worked for me.  It was raining/sleeting during the bike but it was not a gully washer, if you know what I mean.  If it had been pouring, I'm not sure that I could have worn anything different that would have been more comfortable on the bike.  I mean, I have a Gore Xenon rain jacket but it so so non breathable that it's a sauna and I get soaked from the inside which is at least as uncomfortable as being soaked from the outside.

If your feet tend to get cold, you might consider taping the vents on your shoes or using toe warmers.  I think that it'll be too warm for the zip on booties.

Hopefully the front will be delayed until later in the day and you will have good weather for your race.

DON'T STRESS - write down the worst case scenario - the very worst that could happen.  Then write down how you would handle that.  Then you have a plan and you can put it out of your mind and get some sleep.  I did it with IM, because it does keep me from sleeping occasionally - what's the worst that can happen, how would I deal with it....worked out none of it mattered in the grand scheme of things.  I sleep better.

Well I felt cr*p all day til about 5pm - did swim squad, was amazed I could but actually the 2.6km in 1 hour 10 mins was pretty good given I was taking it easy and feeling not that clever!

Came home ate dinner felt cr*ppy again went to bed.

Feel better this morning and taken the day off anyway to get my hair done - naughty naughty.  I got Artemis though it's still school hols.  My DH brought her and her friend Willow to work yesterday to see me - below is us in the gardens at lunchtime (where I run)  Artemis on the left in the pretty dress (such a girl!)

X2 on smart wool socks and not wearing a rain jacket. If a jacket is actually good enough to be waterproof it's not going to breathe well at all.

Hello all, I hope you are getting all kinds of ready for the weekend.

Reece, that is a smoking fast 10K run for lunchtime! Wow.

Melanie, this Florida boy has no input on the cold weather questions, sorry. I'm sure you'll do great, just focus on the parts that you can control and the other stuff will fall into place.

Kirsten, I hope you are feeling better soon.

Enjoy your weekend!

Thanks, gang, for all your thoughts and input as to what to wear for my race Sunday.  The rain with the cold is just such a curveball that I am still not quite sure how I'm going to deal with it.  I really liked the toe warmer idea, as well as SmartWools and will do both.  And I'm glad numerous people mentioned the jacket conundrum: waterproof will keep me dry but won't breathe; not waterproof will just get wet and make me colder, heavier and miserable.  I guess I will go with arm warmers and maybe a vest (vest isn't an official biking vest, it's my running jacket without sleeves.  I think it's waterproof, not sure).  Have a 2nd pair of arm warmers dry for the run if I think I want/need them, and possibly a 2nd pair of socks(?).

I'll still keep a positive outlook that maybe all this worrying is for naught, that the rain will happen later in the day and all I will need to be concerned about is the 'high' of 52.  Keeps dropping, LOL!

Hi. I've been a bad Manatee. I slunk around and kind of purposely forgot to mention that Thursday I would be putting in an 18-hour day, most of it being the Board of Commissioners meeting and Annual Shareholders Meeting for my dad's company. Let's say the company runs kind of like the Funny Farm but with a lot more cloak and daggers stuff. Also, my father is ... beyond words, but the most intense human I've ever met and impossible are close.

So my sister and I flew to Jogja (in between Jakarta and Bali), leaving our homes at 5:30am, put in a wrecking-ball of a day with my dad and other Persons of Interest, getting back to Bali well past midnight.

I've been pretty sick today and slept almost all of it. Usually takes a couple of days to fully recover from each day in which my father plays a significant role (= anything over 10min).

My oral surgeon, I think, would slit my throat.
