Extreme Veteran 826 Bristow | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Thanks everyone! The search continues. It is amazing how many people have stepped up and are passing my resume around. It helps a lot to see people step up and do that for us. To bad I am on my rest weeks after the HIM. Some workouts would help relieve some stress. Instead I am enjoying lots of good food instead haha Anybody racing this weekend? |

Pro 4723 CyFair | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Originally posted by carrie639 So another bike ride under the belt with a space heater on and a long sleeved tee!!! It is certainly getting easier, but can I do it for 6-7 hours? I honestly think this is partly why I could run the run on Sunday. Good thing is the weather at Muncie is relatively nice so far .... I can hope right? I am working about 14 hours days so hot yoga is out of the question right now ...
Are you eating on these trainer rides? Part of the reason hot yoga isn't really heat acclimation is because you're not simulating race conditions. It's about making sure you know if you need extra hydration or that you know what effect it has on your heart rate while cycling or running or getting your stomach acclimated to accepting food during a time of combined heat and intensity stress. It is not about just getting used to being hot.
Now if you watch your HR and don't over do the bike you should perform up to whatever your training load will let you. |

Pro 4723 CyFair | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Originally posted by carrie639 So Chicagoland has gotten so much rain OW swims and triathlons are being cancelled this weekend. I assume since Muncie it getting alot of rain as well the water will at least be cooler than 78. Can a body of water warm up as quickly as 2 weeks is forecast is not hotter than 85 right now? Also, has it ever happened that a swim portion will be cancelled because of e-coli? Thoughts: If the water is borderline illegal for a wetsuit would you wear one (still legal)? The buoyancy is huge, but will the heat of wearing one at that borderline create a problem?
Use the wetsuit. It will conserve energy and you're going to need all you can save. Drink a bottle of sports drink before the swim and make sure you're drinking at least every 10 minutes on the bike. If you don't have an empty bottle to exchange at EVERY handup you aren't drinking enough. |

Sucked because I came off a great high from the weekend and then I was told on Monday that Friday will be my last day. We think it is a blessing in disguise. This job was a tough commute and kept me from the family a lot more. It was difficult on my training schedule as well. Now on to new opportunities and hopefully something better for my family and I. So if you know anyone in Northern VA hiring a Info Systems Security Professional I am their man! Ugh. That really stinks Larkin. i hope that you and your family can find something soon. x2! I can put feelers out through friends of mine that might be able to help you out. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed I got my front hydration setup mounted for tomorrow's long ride. Not so sure about the Speedfil. The straw looks like it's going to poke an eye out. May have to swap that out for a normal bottle if it becomes a situation tomorrow. Storms all weekend for us but I'm going to try to do the first 2 hours of my 4 1/2 hour ride outside. 5 more weeks of hard training before taper. I think I can, I think I can..... |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Larkin - keep your chin up. I was out of work last year and used my workouts for stress relief. I unfortunately have no connections in that area but just say to get in contact with as many recruiters as possible. It might seem annoying to talk to so many, but helps. Scott - I am for sure practicing the hydration and food on the heat rides. Jen - make sure to jump on the trainer with the speedfil to make sure the straw is positioned right. |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Did an OWS this morning with five other people and a kayaker. We were going to swim out to an island in the bay when the fog rolled in. Could hear the fog horn from the lighthouse off in the distance. It's Maine. It happens. Couldn't see a thing. Hit stop on the Garmin. Continued on parallel to the shore. Forgot to hit start on said Garmin. Figure we did 1.25 miles all totaled. Nice way to start a Sunday morning. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Longest ride ever today, and last long one, THANK GOD! 62 miles, I really worked on nutrition, water, perform, salt, blocks. I was very disciplined today and still felt a lack of energy at times and certainly on the run! I didn't finish my long run til late last night so I am sure certainly had something todo with it. On a positive note, got my bike in for tune up, and fitted again, and fitter thinks my seat is a tad high which may be the cause of the hamstring pain. Now can we get rid of it inside 2 weeks? |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed I had my longest ride ever this past weekend as well. 75 miles. Kinda freaked me out a bit because I was absolutely spent by the end. The thought of doing 112 and then a marathon is intimidating. I hit full on freak out mode yesterday. Not good. Speedfil worked great. It's a keeper. Like Carrie, I've dialed in my nutrition and it's solid. I've also found a pre-race dinner and breakfast that work perfectly for me. Sushi the night before the race and rice, berries, banana, honey, and sports drink on race morning. Works like a charm On my long ride I ended up pulling in to a gas station to refill my bottle and didn't unclip my right foot in time. Scratched up my bike frame. A little road rash on my elbow, arm, and leg. It was more embarrassing than anything. A guy actually walked over to see if I was ok. This is the second fall in the last two weeks. I need to pull it together. Seriously. My body AND my brain are fried. I don't even want to look at this bike for at least 6 weeks after my IM. Swim and recovery ride today. I have to do some schedule juggling bc of holiday travel. |

I don't know what's up with our summer, but it's a real bummer. I think the 90+ temps are going to hit in August this year. |

Here's the thing about being spent on long training rides, you have to take into account that you're training all week long and then you ride on the weekend. There is NO WAY you're going to feel like you can get off and run a marathon. Basically no matter how well rested you feel your gas needle is not on F. Going through a 2-3 week taper will ensure that you walk into the race on full. So all in all it's normal Jen. Don't freak out. |

Member 216 Haymarket, VA | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Just got caught up on all the posts, looks like y'all have had fun. I had a very productive staycation. Pressure washed and stripped my entire deck (unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate for resealing/restaining), felled 4 trees and diced them up (one more to go), re-screened 4 windows, installed 4 ceiling fans (only got electrocuted once), and made a good dent on clearing the brush from my back yard. With the extra time I bumped up my runs to 10K each workout, and found a nice 18mi loop to ride. Not counting a race, it was the first time my bike has seen anything other than my trainer. It felt really good, so now I'm looking into other longer loops from my house. Going to get out on the road more with the bike. Of course this makes my wife paranoid, so to somewhat appease her fears I've got a road id on it's way, and have installed "Real Time GPS Tracker" on my phone so she can ping me to see where I am. Larkin, you have mail. |
