Good Morning Everyone! It seemed like the alarm clock went off really early this morning.... While I hated getting out of the rack - I'm going to love driving home with the sun still shining.

I was heartened to discover that I was ahead of my training schedule (I hadn't looked at it in a while - instead Iwas just doing the workouts). Knowing that I'm not at rock bottom is a good thing - kindling for the fire....I am behind in my running. With my weight what it is - all I'm going is aqua jogging.... I need to start walking this week.

Speaking of - Goals for the Week 1) Follow my 10 week Sprint Plan (tri newbies if anyone wants to join me), 2) Do a better job on fitness pal and record calories for at least 5 of the 7 days, 3) Do 4x 10 minutes of PT, 4) Sign up for my first race (Jenn - Did you get the green light?) Reward - A trip to clown shoes brewery

Favorite thing about BDAS - the shared passion for beer and triathlon

Have a great week!

PS - Tonight's reward - Headhunter's IPA, which is the best thing to come out of Cleveland since Bernie Kosar

Hi everyone,

Checking in after a long weekend (I never get on my computer over the weekend if I can avoid it b/c I'm on it all day every day at work). Catching up takes some time on Mondays!

A couple things are going on with me. First, I am officially carless, and it could not have been a more perfect time to start walking to work. Today is beautiful outside, and we are expecting a high of 55. After work I plan on going on a run with some girlfriends. First one in awhile, so it's going to be slow, but I'm okay with that. Just excited to be outside.

The second big thing is that I'm worried I hurt my shoulder pretty badly in my accident. I've always had a bad right shoulder, but it's so painful right now that I'm worried I tore something. I plan on making an appointment today to see an orthopedist. I'm nervous. Hopkins (where I work) has a lot of great surgeons, but I'm trying to avoid surgery if possible so may try to find someone who doesn't specialize in surgery, so maybe they will find other options for me.

All that being said, I have not swam in a bit. Some days are better than others, but I'm afraid I will make it worse in the pool. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

As for my favorite thing about BDAS, I love the support and positivity. We are all at different places in our training and our experience level, and even have people who are injured and fighting to get back into a groove, and everyone has advice, gives support, and recognizes the effort everyone is putting in. I thrive off positive energy, and this group is overflowing with it.

Hi Everyone! Sorry I haven't responded to all your awesome messages about nutrition and fitness and gear for tris. I promise I will do so soon! I'm in Miami on a mini vacation before I start my new job next Monday, so I haven't been at the computer much

Quick check-in: last week I didn't hit all my workouts like I wanted to. I got almost all my runs in - just missed my final 5k before doing 5 miles over the weekend. The 5 miles were rough - lots of stop and go - but I finished the distance, anyway. I'm just getting ready to head out for 3.5 miles now.

Training this week:

Monday: 3.5 miles
Tuesday: weight training
Wednesday: 5 miles
Thursday: 3.1 miles
Friday: Swim
Saturday: 6 miles
Sunday: rest

Happy Monday!

+1 for the feed zone book. I bought it this summer and am going to get the portables one also.

Sober Mike- nice race! If you are getting free new belgium drink a ramant for me

Dave- sounds like the mojo is starting to smolder. You'll be back to making me feel bad in no time.

Nicole- Rest your shoulder. Get it looked at and rest it. No sense in trying to get in a swim only to injure it worse sidelining you for a month or more. If it is hurt but not injured then you can push though but until you know I would say play it safe. Sitting out is the hardest part mentaly but you can still run and bike. I have found that my running fitness really sets the tone for my swimming fitness. If I am running like I should then my VO2 stays up and swimming comes easier.

The reason I join this group each time is that I have learned so much from my first sprint to the HIM and now workign toward a full. The group has helped me not only learn about the sport since no one in my peer group does tri's, but has held me accountable when I feel like I am falling off where I should be, or like today when I wanted to sleep in but got up anyway. I am hoping I can pay it back by helping people with the knowlage I have gained. I also like that several of us brew.

My goal for the week is not to miss any planned workouts. I am working 13 hr days today and tomorrow then have to drive 2 hrs to help my mother with a busted pipe (again) on Wed, then driving to upstate NY thursday for a 90th Bday party for my grandmother IL and drive back Sunday.

Up early for the first day of my ironman training plan. Got the run done and most of the swim but ran out of time and had to get to work with 5 sec to spare as I walked though the door. Being relesed from light duty friday 30 min run in z2 and 1000 in the pool done. (should have been 1800). Guess its time to sign up and make this thing happen....

It used to frustrate me that I could sometimes be in the top 20% at 5ks but BOP at half-marathons- but a runner friend pointed out that tons of people show up for 5ks, but you have to be serious to do a HM. I'm sure something similar is at work in TTs.

I find that with running events there is a larger spread of abilities. You have people crossing the finish line of a running event basically every minute or so. At cycling events you either have the guys who live and breathe cycling and obsess over their numbers and training plans and their gear and what not and then there are 'normal' people who train and enjoy riding bikes and what not but aren't batsh*t crazy obsessive about making sure their watts per kg are spot on come race day. I happen to be part of the bath*t crazy crowd. I highly recommend it if you can but be prepared to become an incredible annoyance to everyone around you.. lol.

Here's a great summation of bike racing: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... Also, obligatory reference to The Rules. Also, Rule #47: Drink Tripels, don’t ride triples.

Personally, I'm not planning on bike racing at all this year. Category 5, where everyone starts, is a ball of chaos and amateurs, and I would be one of them. Next year, when I've got another year of base in my legs and decent bike-handling skills, then I'll get my ten finishes and get the heck out of cat 5.

I feel bad about it, in a way. I love riding and I love sharing riding with everyone - there's nothing like the joy of burning lungs and burning legs and the freedom of climbing the next big hill and showing God and the universe that there's nothing in the world that can stop you. I'm also the jerk shouting "ON YOUR LEFT" as a pass a moderately-skilled cyclist in a blind corner in a sprint.

Cyclists are a particular breed of crazy - like Adam said, we're batsh!t insane. You don't get a t-shirt for showing up to a cycling event - if you're an absolute monster, you might get $25 for winning, and if you're having a bad day, you might get some road rash and a broken collar bone. And stuff this like crash is why. The guy in grey (barely see him in the video) move to take the inside line, probably taps his breaks, the guy in red jerks right to avoid touching wheels, and taps the guy on the right, and five other guys go down.

TT races are a little different, but there's such a disparity in abilities, so you'll have guys that average 19 or 20mph and guys that will average 25 or 28. They were talking about average rolling speeds at my club's kickoff meeting. For the A group, they'll start around 20.5mph in May and by August, the figures will be kissing 22mph average, with a lot of fast stretches north of 30mph. The Bs will be somewhere between 18 and 21, and the Cs (my group!) will be between 17 and 20. My club really emphasizes safety and bike-handling, so a lot of that is why I'm starting in the Cs, until my skills get better.

It sucks though, because not every club is like mine - there's a lot of jerks here. And I expect to get yelled at a lot as I get beaten into a good cyclist. But at 30mph with 2 inches between wheels, there is zero room for error.

Another quick little bit of fun: I now realize that I’m far closer to being an NFL quarterback than I am to being a pro cyclist.

Originally posted by chayes Did my long run (16 miles) for the week. The weather was nice and roads and trails were 90% clear, but what wasn't clear was ice. My Garmin (105) died about 5 miles in, which was frustrating. I was at 75% battery when I left the house, so I hope it's an anomaly and doesn't mean it's going bad. Fortunately I had my phone with me and could use map my run to track my mileage. QUESTION: Any advice on how to stay motivated to finish strong on long runs? My previous long runs, I've been hurting by the end, but this week it wasn't any particular pain, I was just sick of running. I would take a short walk break... then keep walking... and then it was a huge mental struggle to finish. Same thing at the HM last weekend. Granted, conditions were terrible, but the last 3 miles I did a ridiculously slow walk/ shuffle that physically, I don't think I needed to. What can I do to get myself to not give up?

A few things jump to mind:

  1. You might be running too hard for your long runs; kick it back a notch and enjoy it more.
  2. Find someone to run with, even if he or she is slower than you and if he or she is only there for part of it.  10 miles of shared joy, suffering, and conversation is a lot quicker than 5 miles by yourself.
  3. Find a new place to run.  The same old roads and venues get boring.  Find a forest preserve, running trail, or just drive 20 minutes from your house to start running.
  4. A quick stop for a bottle of sports drink makes everything better.  Studies have shown that the sweetness hitting your tongue, even without the sugar, produces significant increases in power.  For example, my last trainer workout was 4x20min at 85-95% FTP, with 10min between.  I'll start sipping some very-diluted sports drink (leftover powder from my IM build last year) 5min into the 3rd interval, and the suffering diminishes.
  5. Salt tabs can make a huge difference if you have any sort of cramping.  Also, magnesium and potassium salts can deplete over extended training blocks and they are trace elements in the first place, so supplementation can help there as well - and there's no real downside if your levels are fine.

What I like about BDAS:  Huge range of ability levels.  From Adam and I talking about the bike, to giving my hard-learned opinions to new folks, there's always something to talk about.

Theme for the week suggestion:  What is holding you back from your goals?  What is the name of that little devil on your shoulder that is whispering those negative thoughts?  And conversely, what's the angel on your other shoulder?

For me, feeling guilty and ashamed.  I've got a case of the "s’pose’das"  I'm supposed to be 165 pounds, my FTPs supposed to be 300, my running pace supposed to be 9:30/mile . . .and all the rest. My little devil is "Supposedda."

The angel is Captain Jack Sparrow.  "The only rules that really matter are these: what a man can do and what a man can't do. For instance, you can accept that your father was a pirate and a good man or you can't. [...] And me, for example, I can let you drown, but I can't bring this ship into Tortuga all by me onesies, savvy? So, can you sail under the command of a pirate, or can you not?"  For me, I can't run as fast or ride as hard as I want, but I can still ride and still run and still train, and so long as I do that well, the rest doesn't matter at all.

hahaha funny that you quote Jack Sparrow today when that is the song that got me though my run this morning. Just as I was ready to stop this came on and had me laughing while I was running.

Happy sunny day!!!! The sun is out in full force here and I think we might get close to 40! (38 is pretty close....) I am starting to see puddles forming next to snow banks.

Okay, 2,250 yards in this morning with speed sets; plank challenge and squat challenge also done and I can feel it!! Tonight, I dine.... I hit the store on the way home from teaching and picked up a few tasty treats - debating, I might have to go with a hard cider tonight. (love Citizen Cider - even if you're not a fan of hard cider, this is a good one!!)

Why I love BDAS: I love the energy of the new folks and the experience and input of the seasoned veterans. I love how you all keep me motivated when you talk about your workouts - it gets me out there!! So thank you! I love that I know i can ask just about any question and someone will have an answer or an experience with whatever topic I bring up. When I hear of others who are going through injury issues like me and you're not giving up, it spurs me on too.

My shoulder inhabitants: Time - or seeming lack thereof. With my husband traveling each week it can be tough but manageable (easier during the school year than when the kids get out); but when hubby is home he does not like me working out as it takes time away from everything else. (I try very hard to make any training have virtually zero impact on the family so that gets to me sometimes - he's just not into tris or any sort of "disciplined" working out, which is fine). But time is really it and i need to be more disciplined to make every second count.

My good angel? I don't know! I know that I am so much happier when I work out - I am definitely an endorphin junkie. I feel more complete as a person when I exercise. Maybe that's my angel?

Goals: for this week will be to keep up the 2 challenges and hit every workout! The runs are tough....because I can't really do them so I just have to do what I can with that. I do get my knee checked this Friday finally so we'll see where I go from there! The only other thing I've had linger like this is bursitis in my shoulder back when I used to pitch fast-pitch softball. Positive vibes!!

Nicole,
Definitely get it checked out - it could be simple or a strained or torn rotator cuff muscle - ouch, I've had both. It could be a damaged or torn labrum (yup, I've got that too). I have never needed surgery to this point and lots of PT has enabled me to avoid it and still function pretty well doing everything I've wanted to do - rock climbing, tris, skiing, etc. Hopefully you'll be as lucky but if it's hurting, there's no need to damage it any further. Rest up. You are lucky to work at such a great place!! How convenient! Good luck and I'm sending you positive vibes!!
Best,
Jenn

I'm grumpy and need some advice. I got a nose bleed yesterday and every time I try and do something it starts up again. How do I get it to stop?

I decided just to walk rather than bike at lunch and it started up again! I felt like I was totally on the right track and now I'm falling back again.

What do I love about BDAS? That I can ask weird questions like this and get support and understanding!

I get what you're saying, but according to the Internet we have 18% humidity right now and it's not that unusual for this to happen once or twice a year to me. Starts with blowing my nose and just struggles to close. I've had doctors look before (okay, not in while) but they always say your capillaries are close to the surface and it's dry out. It stops when I'm doing nothing. I will hit up a doctor if it's not better in another day or so.

The measure we use for horse nose bleeds is bucket or tea cup- and this is more a tea cup level of bleed.

I use to have this happen to me when I was a kid. I frequently woke up with a bloody pillow and had to sleep with a humidifier. It went away eventually. If it's dry and you've had it before, maybe give it some time. If you start to develop any other symptoms (especially a cough), doctor it up. I don't think any one here is a doctor which is why I suggest a doctor if your concerned about it. Would hate to give false reassurance...

I'm so pumped right now. I got home from school and the weather was nice so I decided to put the road bike together for the first outdoor ride of the year. I put about 20km in but most importantly I went out to my TT spot and did an 8km TT. Out and back (tail cross wind on the way out, head cross on the way back). Even after a hard weekend of training, no food no special prep just a jump on the bike and go, I hammered out 39km/h (24.2mph) average speed over the 8km.. Unfortunately my power data kept dropping out so I don't have actual figures but I when I did get power I was pushing out between 270-340watts. I also did a little sprint down my road and hit 1200watts.

If you see this bike coming down the road... get out of it's way...

That is a sweeeeeeeeeet road machine.... You need to name it. A bike like that needs a name...like Rocket or Screaming Shadow or Flying Death or Jimmy...LOL
Well done!!

Hey, I got onto Zwift Island apparently! I'll have to see if I can figure out how to get on it tomorrow.

Haha! I call it 'The Ghost' because it's made by ghost. All my bikes have names like that. My Track bike is called 'The Fuji' because it's made by Fuji. My old road bike is called 'The Punisher' because the original seat that came with it punished my a$$ and my winter beater is called 'The Clunker' because, well its an MTB that's way too big for me and weighs almost much as I do.

Let me know if you get on, we should start organizing Zwift BDAS group rides.

(its a bit ridiculous that this site censors swear words... )

This happened to me ages ago. It was just that, combo of dryness and then when my blood was pumping harder it would start the nose bleed. I was young and didn't think to go to a doctor. But I think you wind up with a weak spot in your cappilaries and will be more prone to them until it heals. I haven't had one in ages and ages.
Can you use a humidifier? That might help.
Seeing a doctor isn't a bad idea, of course.
I feel for you, though- it sucks to have stuff out of your control stop you from working out. Maybe you can do weights? You might not get your heart pumping enough to make your nose bleed.

I decided just to walk rather than bike at lunch and it started up again! I felt like I was totally on the right track and now I'm falling back again. What do I love about BDAS? That I can ask weird questions like this and get support and understanding!

Weights might be worse if its weakened capillaries. The strain of lifting and resultant increase in blood pressure might cause them to pop. Never know until you try though. There are some over the counter nasal sprays that hydrate the inside of the nose. They might work to alleviate the problem so it can heal up.

I cut my teeth track racing. No brakes, 45km/h, 2 inches from the guys in front of you and 10 other guys bumping and rubbing their way past you while hurtling around an oval on a 55 degree embankment with g-forces sucking your chin down to your handlebars... It's wonderful but scary as h*ll.

My favourite summation of bike racing is a quote from Thomas Krabbe's The Rider, "Road racing imitates life the way it would be without the corruptive influence of civilization. When you see an enemy lying on the ground what’s your first reaction? To help him to his feet. In road racing you kick him to death"

And here's another I like that I use to keep me humble and shame myself into doing what I have to do. This quote has a tendency to rub people the wrong way. If it does, discard it. But if it fires you up and makes you want to get on the bike/in the water/out for run then it's purpose is well served.

“The greater the suffering, the greater the pleasure. That is nature’s payback to riders for the homage they pay her by suffering. Velvet pillows, safari parks, sunglasses; people have become woolly mice. They still have bodies that can walk for five days and four nights through a desert of snow, without food, but they accept praise for having taken a one-hour bicycle ride. ‘Good for you’. Instead of expressing their gratitude for the rain by getting wet, people walk around with umbrellas. Nature is an old lady with few friends these days, and those who wish to make use of her charms, she rewards passionately.”

Check-in: 1 workout for the week. Did 1600 in the pool. This was the first time I did my initial Sprint distance (800) with only freestyle - no resting stroke. My time was the same as with the rest strokes in it, but that was a milestone that I was trying to hit. Now I just need to work on form more (that was the second 800). I need my tired strokes to be more controlled and less splashy.

Shirt Update Multiple emails with the company today. They had a few more questions for me. The team site should be up shortly.

My good angel: My daughter. Even if I felt like blowing off my workout tonight, I got a text message asking if we could go work out. Kinda hard to say no, though I did dial back her request for 2 hours of working out. Who am I Aquaman?

My devil: Me. I still haven't gotten over the mental hump. When I'm around these athletes in the various races I still feel like I tricked them all into thinking that I'm an athlete too. It's like I'm Jane Goodall. I act the part and I fool these silly athletes. Secretly I'm a chubby beer drinking couch potato. I wonder if they'll figure me out.

You're an athlete. That's all there is to it.
