Anybody know why I always get a cold A$$ when running outside when the temps dip below freezing?????? It doesn't seem to matter what I wear, if I over or under-dress, my A$$ is always freezing at about mile 2?  Some scientific reason for this??

I've always heard that muscle stays a lot warmer than fat....Laughing

It seems that I am being called a FAT-A$$?!  I often fit the name calling bill on lots of differetn fronts, but not that one.  At 6'0 173 lbs I am staill actually tring to put on weight and certainly don't have any there!!!

Laughing  Thanks for thinking of me though!!!!

Yeah, I know.  I've seen your a$$ a time or two (fully clothes Fatty), but it was all I could come up with on such short notice!

I actually have the same issue so maybe its a muscle gets colder than fat argument!

But wait, my bum never gets cold in the cold....then again, I live in San Francisco!  So my cold is warmer than your cold by a longshot!  who's on first?

Yep, still here at work while those guys have all arrived at the destination!

Have a great weekend, guys and gals, thanks for the well wishes...JULIA, go get em tomorrow! Glen, have a great race!  Sorry if I missed anyone.  I will try to keep John in line.

Is it PAIN CAVE or HURT LOCKER?   I always forget

Getting ready to go to a bike race clinic this morning, it's cold...

Practicing pacelines & echelons and the reason I am going, bumping. I think we're practicing that on the grass, see what happens when you rub wheels and how to recover.

You guys have fun in vegas.

Speaking of cold, it was -2F WC here today and we have 6" of snow on the way tonight.  I knew it would eventually get here (blech!)

And I got to run this morning at O-dark-thirty!  No complaints about the weather because I was just happy to be cleared again to begin to run whenever I wanted from my minor tendinitis   Laughing.... makes me realize that I don't know how anybody handles being severely injured and not being able to train (thinking of ya Doug!).  Still no intervals or downhills for me but a solid 4+ mile effort on one of my favorite paths through the park.

AND IT WAS COLD....but I HTFU (just for you Suzy) and got it done!!!  Still much better than running on any dreadmill!

Anybody know why I always get a cold A$$ when running outside when the temps dip below freezing?????? It doesn't seem to matter what I wear, if I over or under-dress, my A$$ is always freezing at about mile 2?  Some scientific reason for this??

Yup. It's fat. The blood doesn't get there and warm it up. It's sort-of a fun experiment (if you're into that sorta thing) to come home and feel various places on your body and see what's warm and what's cold. It tells you where you have fat layers. I won't name where my various spots are, but there are several. (And no, John, not my boobs -- not nearly enough fat there.)

And Steve -- no, not a shot on the capris at all. I know something went down involving you and capris but I don't really know what it was. Anyone who has seen Steve's legs in person will agree that he can wear whatever the heck he wants anytime he chooses. Just don't do a cold OWS with him unless you want to see an alien trying to work its way out of his lower leg!!

Party on, Vegas peeps!! Send frequent updates!!

That is interesting about the fat tissues...and funny, my chest is never cold..hmm!  My hands feel like I had a stroke after some of my cold, long runs.  Once they thaw, they are fine.

Good luck in Vegas everyone and post pictures please! Tony tell us about what you learn today at the bike clinic : )

I finished my trail Marathon! We had about 3" of nice sticky snow, which was actually really fun to run in. YakTrax rock!Time was about the same as last year (4:54ish), but it was a much better race for me. I was still running at the end!

Congratulations, Julia!! I've been wondering how you were doing. Way to handle the snow and trails, on the heels of last month's marathon, no less!! Take tomorrow off, crack a beer, and get your kids to rub your feet!!!

Hope everybody is having fun in Vegas!!!  (in green because I am jealous!)

Spent a couple of hours with my shoe fitter this afternoon and after 9 or 10 different shoes, finally got fitted into some new Saucony ProGrid Guide 3's.  It seems I have developed more pronation with my left leg versus my right with more mileage, which is what has been causing my tendonitis to flare up. (Plus tight calfs, hammys, etc!!!)  So back to a light stability shoe from a neutral shoe....but man are they light.  Gotta quit dragging that left leg!!

Anyway, we started discussed the "cold bum" thing and he told me it is very common amoung both men and women runners and has something to do with blood flow and the size of the muscle along with how much use it is getting versus the large muscles around it.  I guess I needed a PT or a doctor around to fully understand what he was trying to explain.  When we were done, he showed me a pair of insulated boxer shorts that were specifically designed to stop this issue.

So....just had to pop in and comment that it is not just my fat A$$ causing that issue!!   Laughing

Seems like you're a little sensitive about your fat a$$ Surprised!  I wore Guides for IM training and liked them.  After the distasterous Newton's I'm alternating between them and some new Brooks Glycerins which are a neutral shoe.  Both feel clunky compared to the Newtons, but I'm sure I'll get used to them again.  I ran in "normal" shoes for years!

Julia--I bow down to you!

Vegas Peeps...make it happen tomorrow.

I wear the Guides for long runs (and have some Glycerins I've used for runs up to 12 miles). Yes, they are a bit clunky, I agree with Suzy on that. But they have worked for me! I have another old pair of Sauconys (Ride, maybe?) that I also used for long runs.

I must say my new most favorite shoe is the Brooks Launch. But it's not meant to be a super-duper long distance shoe, so I save it for tempo runs and shorter runs. I wore them for the half mary last weekend and loved 'em. Much lighter than my other shoes.

It wasn't much compared to the snow you get! It was all packed down by the time I got there, so not too hard to run on. It made the woods much prettier to run through.
