How about each of you post a question for the group? Help me out. I'm attempting my first 50-miler this Saturday. Race starts at 6am and the cut off is 9pm. Send me some good vibes. I'm running it with a friend and we have made a pact that there will be NO discussion of quitting and we WILL cross the finish line together. We'll be running with Boston in our hearts. |

Expert 847 Brevard, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Julia and Bruce, I'm so glad everyone is safe and no one from our MG family was hurt in Boston. Another BTer, DirkP (from my very first MG) was running his first Boston Marathon and his wife and two daughters were there supporting him. They are all ok as well. It was one of those days that you never want to go through again. Where I live, someone had made a threat to kill 20 kids from various schools in Elkhart County on Monday the 15th, so we had extra security and only about half of our students in attendance on Monday. Nothing happened here, but Mean People Suck!

Veteran 256 Madison,AL | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed I am doing a dualthon on Sat. 3 miles on the run and 13.5 on the bike. I am sure my legs will not be happy. I am going to just go out and race to kinda gauge where I am. I hope my legs feel better than they did last Sunday. What do you do to get legs prepared for running after biking?

Woo Hoo Jayne. Good luck! It will all be good just pace yourself and stay upright. It's amazing how the brain will work with your body to get you through the day. My one piece of advice (not sure what kind of support is out there) but eat as often as you can to keep the energy up BUT eat only "safe" foods not matter how good something looks like at the moment. I made the mistake of eating from powerbar protein balls. I knew lab food would not sit well in my gut. Big mistake and I suffered for the next 5 miles and 45 min which is a really long time 30m into a 50m race. It's defintely a different beast. I never thought I could eat so much real food but I lived on uncrustables during my race. Every stop - 1 sandwich. Oh so yummy! |

I am running a 10miler on Sunday after a brutal Sat. workout. I just hope my legs still work at the end. I will be ready for my recovery week after this weekend. As far as prepping for bike/run transition. Bricks are the key. Even if you do a short run after a tough bike, just getting your brain to trigger those run muscles into action really helps. I've been doing race simulations for the past 10 weeks and I am amazed at how peppy my legs have been the past 2 weeks off the bike. It has made a real difference. |

Use the Fatty method and take a really long time in T2. Take several minutes, don't be in a hurry, maybe even sit down and give yourself a break. Afterall, you just rode XX of miles, you probably deserve it! Edited by badgerintx 2013-04-17 11:11 AM |

I actually quite like running after biking! Maybe it's because I prefer running and maybe it's because you're already warmed up??? I always stand on the bike and stretch my calves and back in the last few minutes of the bike, seems to help. |

I also like to drop down into an easier gear so I am spinning at about 10 rpm over my normal and that seems to help. I also try to jog out of transition at an easy pace and ease into a harder effort. I am not much of a brick person, maybe one or two 30 minute runs off of longer bikes just for practice sake, but honestly not convinced they are very helpful to me. |

How long does it take to get a rear derailleur replaced? P.S. I have a new respect for people cycling round on old heavy bikes, my 2 hours on one today was miserable!!! |

I personally feel like a 2hr run is a bit much. You are not going to gain anything from it at this point. I would focus on going through the motions, working on the mental side, working on your nutrition, and getting your mind set for a long, successful day. 30-45 minutes tops on the run (closer to the 30)... Get the legs moving off the bike, settle the HR down, and get into that marathon pace. |

I do two big days as part of my IM build-up which does include a 2 hour run and I think it is useful from a mental standpoint. My day might be a little different from David's--2.4m swim, 90' off, 5.5 hour very hilly bike, 90' off and then the 2 hour run. You are running on tired legs and mentally you really have to keep it together or not. It isn't something I would do a lot, but I think it can have it's place. The last BIG DAY is usually about 4 weeks out from IM. Edited by SSMinnow 2013-04-19 5:41 PM |
