2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by aviatrix802 Nicole, Definitely get it checked out - it could be simple or a strained or torn rotator cuff muscle - ouch, I've had both. It could be a damaged or torn labrum (yup, I've got that too). I have never needed surgery to this point and lots of PT has enabled me to avoid it and still function pretty well doing everything I've wanted to do - rock climbing, tris, skiing, etc. Hopefully you'll be as lucky but if it's hurting, there's no need to damage it any further. Rest up. You are lucky to work at such a great place!! How convenient! Good luck and I'm sending you positive vibes!! Best, Jenn Oh man! Good to know that there is a way to avoid surgery. I made an appointment for next Monday morning, so will try to take it easy until then :-) it's just so nice out!! And thanks for the positive vibes! Keep 'em comin'! 2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Got a run in yesterday. The weather was mid-50s and perfect. ran a little over 3 miles at about 9:20 pace, which I am pretty happy with since it's my first run in over a month. I hope to get out there a couple more times this week, and need to try to get a ride in. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by chayes Did my long run (16 miles) for the week. The weather was nice and roads and trails were 90% clear, but what wasn't clear was ice. My Garmin (105) died about 5 miles in, which was frustrating. I was at 75% battery when I left the house, so I hope it's an anomaly and doesn't mean it's going bad. Fortunately I had my phone with me and could use map my run to track my mileage. QUESTION: Any advice on how to stay motivated to finish strong on long runs? My previous long runs, I've been hurting by the end, but this week it wasn't any particular pain, I was just sick of running. I would take a short walk break... then keep walking... and then it was a huge mental struggle to finish. Same thing at the HM last weekend. Granted, conditions were terrible, but the last 3 miles I did a ridiculously slow walk/ shuffle that physically, I don't think I needed to. What can I do to get myself to not give up? Hmmm - interesting.... I wonder what you are really battling. Do you think it's fatigue? Motivation? Nutrition? If it's fatigue - you may want to explore the galloway method - where you take walk breaks throughout the course of your run. Doing so give you more energy and that might help make the last bit - when you are getting fatigued - a little easier. If it's motivation - you might try breaking down the final leg of your run into small section. So instead of running to the end, run to the next phone pole or try to pass the person in front of you. If it's nutrition - you should really take a look at how you are fueling your body. When you run out of gas - it's really hard for you to focus on finishing strong - both mentally and physically. An easy way to test this would be to take a gel or have a easily digestible snack 30-45 minutes before the finish and see if your energy improves. You could also try drinking something sweet - studies have shown that simply tasting something sugary can help give you a mental boost. Good luck! |

38 Arlington, Virginia | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Happy Tuesday y'all! I've been terribly absent: bad weather and an awful school/work schedule last week plus the flu that hit me last thursday pretty much destroyed me until this morning. I also got some great/awful news: I'm going to be spending most of my summer running a Duke summer camp in Winter Park, FL. This is a great job with solid pay and serves as a wonderful safety net as I graduate and try to find a real job where I can use my masters. However, it means that I won't be able to compete in the Columbia IronGirl I was planning on signing up for. I'll be flying down, so I can't take my bike and the timing is just off. All of that aside, they have a beautiful outdoor lap pool and a great track and I look forward to getting stronger/faster and continuing to make gains. It's not the worst thing in the world as I can continue to baby my heels with the PF, I'm just bummed. So my big question is: does anyone have experience renting road bikes long term? I'll need one for about two months, and more than a racing bike I'm really looking for a bike to get around town on since I won't have wheels. Additionally, are there any mid-atlantic sprints happening in September/October that folks are planning on racing? Since I can't do the IG, I'd like to sign up for something in late September so I still have some motivation. Re-scheduled my personal training session this morning due to still feeling off from the flu, but I managed yoga and I'm gonna do an easy swim tomorrow AM. Here's hoping we're done with the snow, and I can get back on track. Edited by whichwayisdown 2015-03-10 1:19 PM |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by nicole14e Hi everyone, Checking in after a long weekend (I never get on my computer over the weekend if I can avoid it b/c I'm on it all day every day at work). Catching up takes some time on Mondays! A couple things are going on with me. First, I am officially carless, and it could not have been a more perfect time to start walking to work. Today is beautiful outside, and we are expecting a high of 55. After work I plan on going on a run with some girlfriends. First one in awhile, so it's going to be slow, but I'm okay with that. Just excited to be outside. The second big thing is that I'm worried I hurt my shoulder pretty badly in my accident. I've always had a bad right shoulder, but it's so painful right now that I'm worried I tore something. I plan on making an appointment today to see an orthopedist. I'm nervous. Hopkins (where I work) has a lot of great surgeons, but I'm trying to avoid surgery if possible so may try to find someone who doesn't specialize in surgery, so maybe they will find other options for me. All that being said, I have not swam in a bit. Some days are better than others, but I'm afraid I will make it worse in the pool. Keep your fingers crossed for me! As for my favorite thing about BDAS, I love the support and positivity. We are all at different places in our training and our experience level, and even have people who are injured and fighting to get back into a groove, and everyone has advice, gives support, and recognizes the effort everyone is putting in. I thrive off positive energy, and this group is overflowing with it. Nicole - I wouldn't wish as sore shoulder on my worst enemy or even a Ravens fan Seriously - I hope you can find someone to take a look at your wing so you can get back into the swing of things! Remind me - when was the accident? |

Starts with blowing my nose and just struggles to close. I've had doctors look before (okay, not in while) but they always say your capillaries are close to the surface and it's dry out. It stops when I'm doing nothing. I will hit up a doctor if it's not better in another day or so. The measure we use for horse nose bleeds is bucket or tea cup- and this is more a tea cup level of bleed. How are you feeling today - has the bleeding stopped? If you - you should heed Spock's (my new nickname for Alan) advice: call a doctor! |

As long as the weather stays warm (knock on wood) - just think of all the runs you'll be able to get in! You could run to a restaurant for some crabs and beer- perhaps the best food in MD. Major bummer about not being able to compete in IronGirl (why couldn't it be IronWoman?) but here is a link of all the sprint triathlons in Florida this year. Hopefully you can find a race that's even better: http://www.trifind.com/gs_sprint/SprintTriathlons.html?state=FL You might even be able to race with Alex and Chris (and smack them for posting all those pictures of beaches this winter) As for renting a bike long term - my advice would be to contact a few local bike shops and see what they say - they might have a lead on one you could rent or better yet buy and sell back. In fact - I might try to my a used one when you are down there and then sell it at the end of the summer - might be cheap. Towards that end - here is the link for BT's Florida forum. You should write a post asking for advice from people down there. Considering all they do is lay around on a beach - they should have plenty of time to reply. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Hi BDAS - I hope you are all having a great Tuesday. It's 54 degrees outside and life is fine! Two quick thoughts: 1) I had a migraine this morning and as a result, I stayed at home. Once the headache went away, I went out and did some errands and was tempted to stop at my favorite brew pub for a burger and a beer. It's not often that I I'm out and about without the kids and as such, going to a restaurant is often an expensive proposition. the idea of diving into a juicy burger got me almost as excited the weather so I decided to use my carnivorous desires as motivation. So, 25 workouts from now - that burger will be mine! 2) OK - this is pretty cool. A few weeks ago, I found out that Clown Shoes Brewery, which is in Ipswitch MA, was creating a barley wine for release in MI which they had decided to name - The Legend of Minny Quay. How cool is that! What's even cooler is that Minny Quay is my 1st cousin 3x removed. Here's the story - Minny Quay was born in 1860 - when she was 16 years old, she fell in love with a sailor who was much older than she was. When her dad put an end to the relationship, Minny got so upset that she killed herself by walking off the pier in Forrester Michigan. Supposedly, her ghost- longing for her lost love - still haunts the town. The beer is a barley wine which I like as much as Kevin enjoys fruit beers (which isn't very much) but to hold a beer in my hand with my relative's name on it is beyond cool. http://www.prairieghosts.com/minnie.html Tomorrow it's going to be 55 - I can't wait to go for a ride! To just be able to go out the door and run, without worrying about where you can run and whether the wind chills are actually dangerous or just really uncomfortable. And of course New England's winter was much worse than mine! Even being able to make plans- to say I'll run outside in 2 days and know that sidewalks will be passable, or my car will make it up my hill for sure. |

New user 669 Madrid | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by Moonrocket I'm grumpy and need some advice. I got a nose bleed yesterday and every time I try and do something it starts up again. How do I get it to stop? I decided just to walk rather than bike at lunch and it started up again! I felt like I was totally on the right track and now I'm falling back again. What do I love about BDAS? That I can ask weird questions like this and get support and understanding! I am a doctor, but the kind to help you have a baby through IVF (or to deliver it) and although ENT would know better, it seems to me a fragile capilar area, extremely common. Easy ways to improve is to use humidifiers at night in your room, and use neutral vaseline in both nostrils (or noses, however you say this in English), apply it 2-3 times per day, solved! New user 669 Madrid | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by adempsey10 I'm so pumped right now. I got home from school and the weather was nice so I decided to put the road bike together for the first outdoor ride of the year. I put about 20km in but most importantly I went out to my TT spot and did an 8km TT. Out and back (tail cross wind on the way out, head cross on the way back). Even after a hard weekend of training, no food no special prep just a jump on the bike and go, I hammered out 39km/h (24.2mph) average speed over the 8km.. Unfortunately my power data kept dropping out so I don't have actual figures but I when I did get power I was pushing out between 270-340watts. I also did a little sprint down my road and hit 1200watts. If you see this bike coming down the road... get out of it's way... Beatufiul wheels!!!! Juan |

The knowledge, advice and support is a huge motivation as I mainly train alone, and helps me tremendously not to miss a workout. What is holding you back from your goals? I try not to miss a single workout of my HIM plan, the fear of underperform if I miss one pushes me forward. But I do shift around the week the program, impossible not to do it! Juan |

189 Quakertown, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Check-in: 2 workouts for the week. I did a quick 6.75 miles on the stationary bike while waiting to pick my daughter up from gymnastics. The plan was to run but my calves seem to think that a little more rest would be preferred. What's cool about preparing for a Tri? That's the one unexpected thing that I like. Are your legs hurting? Swim. Are your arms hurting? Run or bike. Even with sore running legs, you can still bike. In the past my sore days would become my down days. Now I've eliminated an excuse that I used in the past. I think it's helping me be more even keeled too. After missing a workout I would try harder the next time and sometimes overdo it. Now I'm in a decent pattern where I'm not missing them. The workouts that are no longer missed also seem to have a nice impact on weight reduction. |

7 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Hey Everyone- I did my first 10K of the season on Sunday and PR'd it. Kinda happy about that. The weather started cold, but at least the sun came out as I was running through Plymouth, MI. It started out at 22, but was 37 when I finished. Ran/walked the 10K, then jumped right into the 5K. Developed blisters during the 5K. I just walked it with friends. Want to ride my bike SSSSOOOO badly. I went for a spin on the trainer yesterday. Today, it almost hit 50 in Lansing, but the wind was still blowing and I'm originally from Mississippi, so to me, that's still freezing. Hoping Thursday I'll get on the bike outside. Tomorrow, headed to Grand Rapids to watch my daughter play college lacrosse for the first time. Very excited. Then it's back to the books and trying to get this semester over with and try to keep up with running and riding. I'll get that 3rd sport in yet. Have a great week everyone. OH!!!! Almost forgot the important update. BEEEERRR!!!! I went to an Australian steak place and had a Foster's. I was able to go to Sydney when I was in undergrad and loved all the local beers there. My favorite, and I still miss it, is Toohey's. AAAhhhhh to go back just for a cold one. Pete Edited by Pete99 2015-03-10 8:02 PM |

An easy way to test this would be to take a gel or have a easily digestible snack 30-45 minutes before the finish and see if your energy improves. You could also try drinking something sweet - studies have shown that simply tasting something sugary can help give you a mental boost. Good luck! One of the things my friends and I do here is if someone has a long run planned, the others pick sections of the run to join in (unless someone joins for the whole run). That way you have fresh legs running next to you and fresh conversation every few miles. It works pretty well actually. If you have some runner friends, ask if one will start with you, have another join in 3-5 miles down the road and the first one can stop and so on. You may end up with just a small segment you have to run on your own. Another one is when one of my friends was training for a marathon she broke up her long run into 5 mile segments - she ran 5, had a drink, maybe a gel or bite of something, run 5, do it again, run 5 more. She said that by breaking it down and giving herself a few minutes between made the process much more doable mentally, plus she stayed hydrated and fueled. Hope you find your mojo!! |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business “The greater the suffering, the greater the pleasure. That is nature’s payback to riders for the homage they pay her by suffering. Velvet pillows, safari parks, sunglasses; people have become woolly mice. They still have bodies that can walk for five days and four nights through a desert of snow, without food, but they accept praise for having taken a one-hour bicycle ride. ‘Good for you’. Instead of expressing their gratitude for the rain by getting wet, people walk around with umbrellas. Nature is an old lady with few friends these days, and those who wish to make use of her charms, she rewards passionately.” and that is why I ski....otherwise, I would live in Florida. LOL |
