Whaaaaa. Well, I want a new job. Get me one of THOSE. :-P

http://ga-douglasville.civicplus.com/DocumentView.asp?DID=36There you go.

How about one that doesn't assume that I only have a GED? I could always go work at Starbucks, but I'm pretty sure there are enough emo high school kids around here to take those jobs.

Hardly. The entire goal of the job search is to STOP having to take menial task positions, so I can do something OTHER than menial task positions down the road. I have two degrees, I don't feel that's too much to ask for, if only for the fact that I'd be incredibly unhappy if I had to continue working in a job that was tedious and unchallenging.

I'm not going into this further, but the bottom line is that there are NO teaching jobs right now, esp. not for people with English backgrounds - there weren't any 3 years ago when I finished grad school, either. I'm not certified, so I can't teach at a public school. I also have absolutely NO interest in teaching.

Forget that I said anything. I was just joking with Bcart.

What'd you decide to do? I saw your thread last week (?) about the possibility of government jobs... Tom was telling me it is indeed hard to get a govt job but once you do you're IN. With great benefits, yadda yadda. Seems worth it to try just for the chance...

And I would totally work at Starbucks if I ever got laid off! Especially around the holidays. Everyone is geting all pumpkin spice latte'd and gingerbread mocha'd up ya know?

Well, I'm looking at all of the gov't jobs - most I am not qualified for, beyond the basic admin positions. The gov't contracting thing was a possible part time gig, and I asked my friend who does it for more info - it would be good for part time, however, it would take a few months to get clearance - and beyond that, it WOULDN'T be good for a full-time thing, as the work is not guaranteed. Some weeks she works 5 days a week, some weeks she only works a few - but she's married, so she has her husband's salary as well. So while it would be a good option to fill in part time work until I find something, it might take several months to get cleared before I COULD work, and then I'd be back to square one, trying to find something else in the meantime.

So the bottom line is, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I've been looking over every website I can think of every single day, and am just not finding anything that matches my particular skill set. And if I continue to take basic admin positions, I will have nothing on my resume BUT admin positions, and therefore will not be able ot be hired for anything else. As it is, every job site I've uploaded my resume to only sends me jobs for admins/secretaries and those "work from home and make $20K a month" fake ads.

So here's a PSA - do NOT allow your kids to study music or art or something useless in school. I will never allow my children to make the mistake I did.

I'm sorry but I have to chime in. I am finishing my Masters in English and I am finding jobs here and out West (New Mexico/AZ/CO area). Don't set yourself up short. Maybe you may not have the experience but that doesn't mean you are not qualified. Take a chance. It may lead to an opportunity of a lifetime!!

I've been looking into govt work as well and it appears that they promote from the inside and give raises yearly as you move up through their structure.  So it may not be great for the first year, but with yearly raises, great benefits, and a ridiculous amount of time off it may still be a great option.  I would definitely not complain about finding something open with the Gov.
