I've been looking into govt work as well and it appears that they promote from the inside and give raises yearly as you move up through their structure.  So it may not be great for the first year, but with yearly raises, great benefits, and a ridiculous amount of time off it may still be a great option.  I would definitely not complain about finding something open with the Gov.

It's great if you can get it. Hmm maybe I'll become a flack for some senator or something and make the big bucks.

So here's a PSA - do NOT allow your kids to study music or art or something useless in school. I will never allow my children to make the mistake I did.

I hear you say this a lot... but think back to that time when you made the decision about your major. Would you have listened to your parents? It WAS your dream at one time, no? I don't know how I feel about not "allowing" my (future) kids to persue their dreams... no matter how far fetched they might sound to ME.

Also I remember a couple of people (including me!) suggesting looking at other places in the country like the midwest... places where you can actually get by living on less than $40K. What'd you think about that?

The grade scale of what you can apply for is confusing, but people keep telling me that the R.I arsenal hires fairly regularly.

The problem with basic admin positions is that often, hey are just menial office help. You MIGHT get a chance to proof a powerpoint presentation, etc, but you don't actually learn any real skills, or get to take on more advanced tasks that would assist in you being promoted to a "real" job. And therefore, you never get a chance to be qualified for anything with substance. Especially these days, with a glutted job market of over-qualified people. Companies don't have the time or money to invest in "training" people with no skills when they can find what they're looking for in some poor mid-level analyst that was laid off due to budget cuts.

I have plenty of friends who make great livingin the arts. You just have to be really good at what you do.

I'm a writer. Pretty proud that I followed MY dream and now work for one of the biggest news companies in the world. It paid off after lots of hard work, crappy pay, long hours and sh*tty assignments.

They paid for my education, so yes, they COULD have stopped me. I wouldn't have paid for something like that myself - I know better than that, at least.

Moving is not an option. End of story.

That's why I was saying that in relationship to Government jobs, they tend to promote/give pay raises differently than most places.  And I hear you on the whole not learning skills, not getting advanced tasks, not getting a real job.  Heck, I got fired because they found a guy who swears he could do oil changes faster than I could.

I've heard that.  Also need to find out more about a position the company my sister works for in Denver has open, and I'm working on my resume to send to Felt.  They've got a neat sounding position open just east of L.A.
