LOL! Seriously...great job! 6:13 is FLYING!!! When you say you breathe every stroke what do you mean? Are you breathing left, right, left, right, etc... or left, left, left, etc..? Morning Rob! Sorry I probably should have said every other stroke so, breath, left, right/breath, left, right/breath. Does this make sense? Typically during my training sessions I bilateral breath. I found out during this swim, the longer sprints (like 400yrds) I tense up so much that it makes me fatigue much faster and my heart beat like crazy. When I took a breath every other stroke and made a conscious effort to relax I felt so much better. My senior yr in high school I double sported in basketball and swimming. I did the 50 free relay and sometimes 100 free relay so i'm used to the shorter sprints (my times used to be mush faster, i don't catch the water as well as i used to). Unfortunately when i graduate 17yrs ago I didn't swim again and I'm relearning my form. My kick turns are the worst, my timing and form are horrible. Last week I did a kick turn during the end of my training session I actually pushed off the wall and didn't straighten-up properly and went down and scrapped the bottom of the pool.. yeah that makes sense and is actually how i swim unless i'm just piddling around. kick turn... one day i'll have the skills for that! |

Hey Stan, at least you can do a kick turn. I've tried a few times(not too seriously yet) and just about drowned. Nice 400yds swim time!! Way to represent! Oh, and I was thinking you need an Avatar. Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! TIME TO TRAIN! kt65 - 2009-05-20 10:13 PM John, those bike photos practically made me cry. I am so glad you are okay, yikes! And such a trooper, you were thinking about being okay to run! Sounds like your 50% deal will make it a bit less painful. Trevor, I didn't run up Diamond Head, the mountain! Just out along the coast to the tip of Diamond Head Beach. I highly recommend the run for anyone staying in Waikiki or nearby because early in the am, there are no cars, just you and the other crazy walkers/runners and of course, surfers looking for good waves! But there is a nice hill to get to the top, so it is a nice challenge. I also like to do some speed training on the treadmill, as it doesn't let me off the hook.... I will do something like a 10 minute warm up at long run pace (Z1-2), then alternate 4 minutes Z4 and 3 min recovery (Z1-2) about 4 cycles of this and then c/d 10 minutes. The first fast interval always sucks for me, but then I start really cruising by the 2nd and 3rd... the 4th one is a relief to be done with. I do a similar type of thing with hill workouts. These are workouts that are in my silver HIM plan and they seem to occur once every 2 weeks or so. Today I swam at Kailua Beach (no not that Kailua, Suzy ), this is on the east coast of Oahu. The water was crystal clear and maybe 78 degrees. I was able to actually sight okay, and it was much easier swimming without a wetsuit. I didn't feel the fatigue in my shoulders that I normally do with ows... it makes me believe that perhaps my starter wetsuit is part of the problem and I may look into getting a better model with more range of motion. Take care everyone. Hey Kim How about sharing some pics of your trip so we can all drool a little? I think it is great you think swimming without a wetsuit is better than swimming with one. Think how comfortable you will be when doing IM Kona in 2012! |

Would you belive our "school system" does not recognize Memorial Day for the year round schools? Memorial Day - a day that is observed to commemorate U.S. men and women who died while serving to protect our country and our freedom(s). While our school board does not recognize the day that honors those that have given the ultimate sacrifice to afford us our freedoms, we do celebrate MLK day, the day before and after Thanksgiving, and the entire week between Christmas and New Years Day. We contcted our principal and let him know how we felt and that our boys would not be at school on Monday. He wrote back immediatley and told us he agreed with us, and that he would notify the boys teacher that the boys would not be in class on Monday and that it is an excused absence. (we do have a good principal) OK, rant over. Great Job! But that's a bunch of horsesh*t. |

Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! TIME TO TRAIN! I'm just the opposite (I tend to do a lot of things differently ). When I swim long and relaxed I breathe bilaterally or every fourth stroke. When I get tired my stroke shortens and I breathe every other stroke. |

Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! TIME TO TRAIN! Morning all. Topics for today.... Wetsuits and pulling on shoulders. Make sure you are hiking it up as far as possible in the crotch and back. Once it is fitted properly it shouldn't pull. If it still does I would inquire to a different make/model. Maybe something with more give in the chest and back area. Suzy, wow you are doing great with all those OWSwims in cold water. For someone who claimed to have mental issues in the pool you certainly are facing those fears head on. The conditions you've been swimming in would intimidate the most experienced swimmers. I think you are doing fantastic. Keep it up. And I assume you are wearing a wetsuit for these cold water dives correct? What did you decide on? And don't worry about Steve's swim time. The man is a fish!! I've stopped comparing myself to anything he does. Stan, numb hands. I agree I would check your fit but also consider your riding shorts. I was having saddle issues for a long time and found myself really sore in the shoulders and hands after rides because I was subconsciously holding myself up off the seat b/c it hurt. Once I got a proper seat and a really good pair of riding shorts with a high quality chamois, the aches in my arms went away. Food for thought anyway. And I'm glad to hear even experienced swimmers like you mess up flip turns. I've crashed into the bottom of the pool several times. Now I don't feel quite so dumb. John, how's the body holding up? |

Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! TIME TO TRAIN! I have never worn my wetsuit to race in. My last race was not wetsuit eligible the day before the swim, but miraculously became wetsuit eligible the morning of the race (don't know where they got that sample - there was no way it was that cold). Anyway, I still didn't wear it. Just last week I saw this and am now looking forward to trying the wetsuit in a race. Full Suits, however, are faster for most people. Central to using a full suit correctly is getting it on right. Full suits are best for taller, more experienced swimmers with a more powerful, longer stroke and lower stroke count. Full suits radically affect the way you swim and can conserve considerable every during the swim portion of an event. How much? Here’s an example of my own from Ironman Canada 1997. These tests were conducted on three consecutive days, swim distance is approximate:

Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! TIME TO TRAIN! Wow lots happened in 2 hrs. I just got back from our Kindergarden tour, my son will be going in the Fall. It is amazing how many busy-body parents their are. The county I live in has some of the top rated schools in the country so I assume that teachers are well trained and know how to teach my kids. I wouldn't want them stopping by my office telling me how to post on BT or figure out the Drag Coefficient on my bike, so I won't question their methods or tell them how to do their work. Parents were questioning teaching methods, and all kinds of stuff. Saw 2 sets of parents with 2 pages of notes from an hour and a half tour.... Also mad that I lost an e-bay auction for some new bike shoes because cell-phone reception stunk in the school. Well rant off Rob I will post the link again, Tracy I actually had a guy in the lane next to me last week when I brought my wetsuit in that was actually the wetsuit fitter from one of the local Tri-shops, he helped me adjust and said the suit fit me fine and I still had arm/shoulder issues. Suzy, up to you all, if you want I don't care if times get faster and people update them. I think the cutoff was June 1st. |

Expert 1231 B'ham | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! TIME TO TRAIN! Man, I'm looking forward to the weekend. It's going to be hectic, but the good kind of hectic (I hope). Our son is getting baptised on Sunday, so we have lots of family coming into town for that. It's also Ski-to-Sea weekend (a relay event from the top of the mountain to the sound) and there are other fun activities for kids and adults (let's just say my wife usually drives us home ) I met up w/ a tri training program that some friends are running last night. They were doing a double brick (B-R-B-R). What a workout, during the first run I knew I'd be ok for the 2nd bike, but doubted I'd be able to run the whole 2nd run. |

I've stopped comparing myself to anything he does. I am fortunate in that I have been able to start out in shallow water. Once I hit the deep end so to speak I am scared to death when the waves are crashing at me. My swimming coach has been really great. Next week we are swimming 800 yards out and back together. I ended up getting the Blue Seventy Helix XS. I tried it on and it fit really well. I am hoping to have it next week which will give me a little time to get used to it before my first tri of the season. Unlike Linda, I cannot imagine doing a tri without a wetsuit. Just not confident enough yet. Who is doing what this weekend? PS Tony, I don't have a clue how to open the spreadsheet. Am I logging in with my email and then using your info and password? I tried the specialized on in the shop and they were very easy to get on and off. Also good for both Tri and Road. |

If your pool has one of those big timers at one end, doing it at that end might be easier. Also there are monitors that are waterproof. This one is good to 50m Westsuit...I've had one legal race and one not. I like them both but I am glad the HIM is legal. |
