I went to one of those chain bike stores last night. My friend's seat post clamp sheared off and I live really close to the store he goes to (he gets big discounts after buying a MTB there) so I offered to drop it off.

Holy cow! The incompetence!!

First guy tried to tighten it. I showed him more than once that it was no longer attached to the frame, and tightening it would do nothing.

Second guy lectures me on wrenching on carbon without a torque wrench. It was the aluminum sleeve in the carbon frame that sheared - no damage to the carbon.

Last guy insisted I was doing it wrong, and the clamp should go around the carbon, and that the sheared off piece was really a shim... until I showed him how perfectly it matched the rest of the insert... then he understood what really happened, which I knew already.

The more I learn about bikes, the more picky I get about who touches mine (or anyone else's)

The upside?

Felt is replacing his frame for him, because the seat post clamp is FUBAR, which is awesome.

Holy crap...  the mechanics are telling you this???  That's kind of troubling - especially since they're supposed to know what the hell they're doing.

We're learning which stores to NEVER take our bikes back to, which (thankfully) is a fairly small list so far

hey noob, this already has its own thread!

Yeah, so?? Not everyone ventures out to other threads because they can be (a) scary; (b) aggravating to the point of wanting to go stabby; (c) not worth anyone's time; (d) there are other threads on BT?; so I thought I'd help.

hahah great answer!

I find (b) and (c) to be the most common...

I wanted to scream I AM AN ENGINEER! I know what sheared aluminum looks like and I know what part failed where here.

First one may not have been a mechanic. Second two were. Last guy wouldn't touch it and said to just call Felt. Which, turns out, was the right answer anyway.

I also called my friend and yelled at him and told him to never, ever take his bikes there, even if he gets good discounts

I have my place to take my bikes and haven't waivered.  Actually, I have my GUY.  He worked for one shop and liked his work, then when he moved to another shop, followed.

But honestly?  Other than a once a year tune up just for the heck of it?  I rarely take it in at all.  I can fix just about anything unless it's frame damage.  If it's simply replacing a part?  I do it myself (unless it's warrantee work).

I'm currently worried about an oily rear shock after a hard day of riding.  I hope I didn't blow a seal.  I may have them take a look at that...

OR, for you MTB riders, do you notice oil when you beat the rear shock up particularly hard?  I haven't really noticed it since that ride BUT I could swear that it rebounds a little faster (less damping with less oil).

I swapped/upgraded my crankset and cockpit, so I called in my guy. Turns out, you crew their 24 hour MTB race, and after that, a 6-pack covers labor His family owns the shop, so I make sure I buy stuff from them, too. Going to go buy tools to swap cassettes, and I know I might pay more there, but he'll make sure I know how to use them before I walk out the door.

Can't help ya on the MTB shock question though. Sorry.

I wish I had a guy that I could go to and trust that he was going to do a good job.  I had a fantastic mechanic for my motorcycle and I just KNEW that taking it to him meant that everything was going to get taken care of.

Huh, really no point at all to my post other than to post pad.

Staff appreciation day tomorrow. We have a couple a year.  Giving us a paid afternoon off tomorrow and take us to a movie (Spiderman) and buy us movie theater snacks...  Some people have loaded up in the past (hot dogs, soda, popcorn, candy - all of it), but I'm good with popcorn and a soda.

I need it.  Busted out some big items this week - however, now I don't have anything to do!

I wanted to scream I AM AN ENGINEER! I know what sheared aluminum looks like and I know what part failed where here.

this is because you are a WOMAN and they are MEN and think you don't know WTF is going on.  I have experienced this many times in bike stores.  Makes me stabby as you say.  I am no bike mechanic but i ride enough to know when there is something wrong with my bike

I am an idiot so I feel qualified to speak. It looks like the seat post clamp was torqued down too much. Did the owner of the bike have problem with the seat post slipping? Was the seat post original equipment? It might be a bit small in diameter or something.

Yup - sheared off the top part of the seat clamp. The dang thing has been squeaking for MONTHS. I think it was the original seatpost, but I'm not certain.

The other half of the top part of that aluminum sleeve is missing. My theory is that perhaps that piece was somehow long gone, leading to a somewhat loose seat post, incessant squeaking, and torquing the half that was left to failure.

I wish I had a guy that I could go to and trust that he was going to do a good job.  I had a fantastic mechanic for my motorcycle and I just KNEW that taking it to him meant that everything was going to get taken care of.

Huh, really no point at all to my post other than to post pad.

When and if I can't solve it, I'm kind of in trouble. Most kids are FAR worse than me. But Sean where I used to work and Steve (ex-USA Olympic team mechanic), I trust.

It's hard to hire and keep good people in a bike shop. The pay isn't great and they have to cut and hire based on the season. Right now, owners are calling everyone they know who Ivan stand upright and talk at the same time they're so busy.
