kcarroll - 2010-01-31 1:45 PM Hope everyone is having a great weekend.  I had an amazing training session yesterday.  I spent 4 hours working with a trainer on "resistance stretching."  I first heard about RS reading Dara Torres' book on her return to Olympic swimming.  Last fall, I attended a workshop in the city and had my first experience with it.  At the end of that session, I touched my toes for the first time in my adult life. Since then, I've worked resistance stretching into my regular training and think it can really make a difference on remaining injury free.  Yesterday, I had arranged for a training workshop for my local tri-club.  I was palms flat on the floor by the end of the morning.  (I'm 5'10 and have long legs....palms to the floor is huge.

If you're interested, check this out.

I need to look into this too at 5'9" with long legs I've always had tight hamstrings no matter how much I stretch.  After a work out when I am good and warm I can tough my toes easily and sometimes the ground with my finger tips.  I've never had my hands on the floor!  That would be HUGE for me too!  It always bugged me that touching your toes was considered one of the 3 fitness signs since my Mom hasn't worked out since high school and can still put her palms on the floor.

My big focus this month is strength training, both in traditional weight lifting and straight out core training.  I keep starting it then let it slip so I need to find a way to make it a habit and part of my weekly workouts.  I am pretty happy with my run volume, slowly bringing it up.  For my bike I just need to continue doing what I am doing and hope for some non-rainy weekends so I can get out and ride longer.

I'm actually very pleased with my January...especially since taking a few weeks off in December. I was a little concerned how I would handle getting back on the bike for the first time since August and I was also concerned about drop off in the swim performance. I will say the swim came back pretty quickly and the bike wasn't too bad. If I did have a downfall in January it was that I didn't ride more.

Looking ahead to February, I'm going to have to get used to the early wake up calls for the morning runs. Today was tough being the first day and also that I am not feeling well at all. Hopefully after a couple weeks of doing this, it won't be a big issue. I also need to be committed to the bike - especially getting the longer rides in. Hopefully I can find a way to work in group rides or find some charity rides to help with the accountability and motivation.

You lost me at Dara Torres... Haaawwwwt!  Ha Ha!   Sounds like a good program, I gonna look into it.  Stretching plays such a vital role in injury prevention and improves speed & recovery.

Tuesday is a great day for a Birthday! Ground Hog's Day!... Dog's Rule!
Happy Birthday to Your's & Kim's spoiled pooches!

BTW, if you are dog lover & want to read the best story ever... "Nubs" a story of a Marine & his dog Nubs (an afghanny dog he rescued)... the story is absolutely amazing!  Too long to synopsize here, but if you get a chance - search the story, pick up the book or check out the Military channel and watch the story.  Semper Fidelis to God, Country, Corps, & DOG!

Emmanem - 2010-01-30 11:07 PM What a cute dog!!!! My dog's birthday is on Tuesday and since I can't be home to see her I sent her a present. It's a little valentine's loofa dog and it arrived in the mail today so mom gave it to her a couple days early and she loves it! So I guess both our dogs are spoiled

Keri ~ IT Band issue...  I just spoke to an Elite runner friend who averages 50+ miles a week... asked about the IT issue I may be suffering from.  He plainly said... the only thing that will cure the IT issue is rest... PERIOD!  About 6 weeks of NO running.  You can bike, swim, or other fitness ideas... but No Running!  This is very difficult for me to even consider right now (as I am sure it will be with you), but staying healthy and being able to continue running is vital in this sport.

I am going to seriously consider at leat 4 weeks off from running...  Ramp up the bike time, maybe spend some more time on the Stairmaster and see if that helps to improve my issue.  He said no amount of icing, stretching, and other measures will heal this issue except rest. Just FYI, do as you see fit... just be smart about it.  My knee did not give me any problems this AM, but I don't think I am going to take any more chances.  Running is my crack... so it's not going to be easy!

January was not where I wanted it to be, but at the same time... I am still okay with how it went.  I have to continue to build & I am especially excited about the coming months on the bike! The pool will be visited much more often as well & I hope some rest helps my right knee heal to the point of building some run miles in March & April.
January's totals:
Bike:7h 35m 23s  - 125.24 Mi
Run:7h 49m 25s  - 51.24 Mi
Swim:2h 24m 38s  - 7300 M
Strength:3h 47m
Stairmaster:2h 30m
Stretching:1h 20m

I'll play- January was ok. Only two weeks of real training.  I expect February to be nearly double this.  My consistency has definitely improved with the formal HIM training plan.  Goal for next month is more of the same- stay consistent and get my time in.

January's totals:
Bike:9h 35m 20s  - 158.84 Mi
Run:6h 32m 10s  - 47.69 Mi
Swim:4h 31m 16s  - 13125 Yd

January was an "ease back in from injury month."  The 8 mile run I did in December was really only about 5 of actual running.....the last 3 I had to walk home after the knee went postal.  So, I'm ok with Jan being a bit light.  I'm probably not going to be ready for the HM I'm signed up for in 3 weeks though.  I have another one planned in April and think I'll keep the ramp up slow.

January's totals:
Bike:8h 05m  - 110 Mi
Run:7h 57m 07s  - 39 Mi
Swim:7h 57m  - 15450 Yd
Strength:7h 05m
Hiking:2h 00m
Soccer:2h 00m

December's totals:
Run:1h 31m 36s  - 8 Mi
Swim:7h 40m  - 15250 Yd
Strength:5h 40m

All dogs deserved to be spoiled every once in a while. Now how did you get him to sit and not eat the cake while taking a pic? Mine would have been ears deep in cake by  the time it hit the floor.

Lots and lots of training  We have a picture of him with a treat on each paw and one on his head that is so funny.  Now...had we not been in the room all bets would have been off, but he does fairly well with the "'leave it" command.  Now, if I could just get him to get along with other dogs so he could come on runs with me like the other dog.

Our oldest BT is the same way...she loves to show off her "leave it" skills. She did the treats on two paws as her graduation trick in her puppy training class.

Well, not exactly how I hoped to start off the year, but better than nothing.  My consistency during the month did get better & I'm doing better at getting on a set schedule, but I need to be putting in A LOT more time on the bike.

January's totals:
Bike:4h 27m 42s
Run:13h 53m 38s
Swim:2h 50m

My goal was to work on my core strength and run so I'm happy with Jan numbers. I need to keep my run volume at 20mi/week or better. I'll add the bike this month and swimming toward the end. HIM training plan starts first week of March!!

January's totals:
Bike:50m  - 14.2 Mi
Run:11h 22m 17s  - 66.69 Mi

I am happy with the January numbers.  Most of this month was used to build the base back up after taking a few weeks off in December.  Getting more time on the bike is going to be a focus for this month.  I see all of the numbers increasing with the HIM training happening now.

January's totals:
Bike:4h 50m 30s  - 62.57 Mi
Run:6h 29m 37s  - 36.38 Mi
