Maintaining speed/intensity while reducing mileage seems to be the take-away for me. So, have you started your taper yet? If not, when? You have done your last "long" run, right? Does that automatically signal the beginning of taper? Yes, maintaining speed/intensity is definitely what I plan to do. It's a little bit of a departure from what I have done for marathons in the past, but honestly I feel that I will constantly be adapting many parts of my training along the way. Especially since I am a pretty new runner. So my last "long" run was a 20 miler I did Sunday but I am going to do somewhat of an interim step on Saturday sandwiching a tempo run in between a "warm up" and "cool down" that will get me in the 16-17 mile range. a 16-17 mile run is definitely considered a long run to most people, even myself but the way I am doing it will be more about a solid block of hard effort running than it is about endurance (which, as you read, isn't really what I should be working on in taper) Starting next week will be a much more noticeable drop in mileage and increase in intensity. |

Master 1890 Gig Harbor | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED Quick question for cycling manatee's. What is generally considered a lot of gain for a ride? Is there a general formula? Today I rode 16.8 miles with a little over 1,000 feet of gain. I have other routes with more..just curious.. would that 1,000 feet over a 16 mile ride be considered a lot by most people? |

Veteran 659 East Texas | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED Alright Manatees, down to almost 1 week away from my first half iron and A race of the season. I'm trying to go over everything in my head but since I've never attempted this distance before I welcome all and any suggestions/comments. Some say don't take bike pump because there are plenty some say do How long are the aid stations? I have a speed fill 40 ounce so If I slow down to 10 mph will I have enough time to grab a bottle, fill, then throw the bottle in the designated area? Should I use gel packets and throw empties at aid stations or use a gel flask? Apply sunscreen before I put wetsuit on or spray during T1? I have Tri shoes, go sockless for the bike? Never ridden that far sockless. I'm sure I have a bizillion other question but that's all I can think about right now. |

In mind, I haven't even raced yet, so the only knowledge I have has been gleaned from sites such as this. There are a few things that stand out, 1. I would rather carry a pump weighing a few grams and not need it than be stuck with a flat and lose minutes trying to find someone with a pump. 2. If you've never ridden that far sock less, then don't do it on the day. Nothing new on race day blah, blah, blah... 3. Sunscreen, best ask Yanti about her experience with sunscreen at, I think it was, IM Melbourne. Or read her race report. I'm sure people with a lot more wisdom/experience will give you good advice. Good luck with the race, I am so jealous at the moment. It feels like ages before I finally get to my first race.Alright Manatees, down to almost 1 week away from my first half iron and A race of the season. I'm trying to go over everything in my head but since I've never attempted this distance before I welcome all and any suggestions/comments. Some say don't take bike pump because there are plenty some say do When do you drop off your bike? Race morning or the night before? How long are the aid stations? I have a speed fill 40 ounce so If I slow down to 10 mph will I have enough time to grab a bottle, fill, then throw the bottle in the designated area? They are long. I wouldn't plan to fill 40 ounces during the aid station though. That's two bottles. Just top it off with one bottle. Do you have a cage on your bike or does the speedfill use that area? Have you practiced refilling it while riding? If not, do that this week. Should I use gel packets and throw empties at aid stations or use a gel flask? What do you do in training? What is your nutrition plan? Apply sunscreen before I put wetsuit on or spray during T1? Both. I put a good layer on before the race and then use a spray on (that claims to stick to wet skin) in transition. I have Tri shoes, go sockless for the bike? Never ridden that far sockless. Nothing new on race day. If you haven't tried riding sockless before, this is not the time to experiment with it. FWIW, I figure that for HIM and IM, comfort during the ride/run trumps speed in transition. I'm sure I have a bizillion other question but that's all I can think about right now. Keep 'em coming! |

That's awesome, heck I put up a PANIC post with my entire packing list before my first HIM Bike pump--hell no. There's this new invention called CARTRIDGES. Know how to use 'em. Speedfil--the bottles you'll get aren't 40oz but you'll have time to squeeze 1 in there. Gel flask is way easier. Sunscreen--there's no OR. The only right answer is YES. NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY. Especially anything that might decimate your feet. GO JONATHAN GO! |

I heard that there were would be lots around too, but I was nervous enough that I didn't need to be looking around for a pump. Got there early, pumped up, lots of time to put pump back in my car. As you come into the aid station, make eye contact with the volunteer so they know you are grabbing from them. I used a flask cause I didn't want to have to try ripping open packages. Sunscreen every chance you get. I still have lines from the burn I got at Calgary last year. Nothing new on Race Day. Wear socks. Two other pointers: 1. Thank every volunteer you go by. They are out there all day in the heat/rain/wind to help you on your race. It's just the right thing to do AND the gratitude helps you get through the day. 2. Have fun and smile! Remember this is supposed to be fun. Smiling will help your body relax, tension will slow you down and make you sore. This is your first race at this distance so ANY time is a PR |

Bike check in is the day before, I was not talking about taking a pump on my bike I carry 2 CO2 cartriges, I was referring to do I take a pump into transition area the morning of to top off my tires. Some people say don’t worry about it because the tech tents will have them and others say take yours so your used to it.
I won’t go sockless
I currently use a Gel Flask. Nutrition plan is to just take Gel’s with me on the bike and drink the ironman perform on the run. I’ve though about putting a GU Chomp or something in my fuel box for when I first get on the bike then the remaining time with Gels. Didn’t know if packs would be easier because I have both flask and gel packs.
Glad to know the aid station is long and that I’ll have time to top off my speed fill. I do have 2 cages behind the seat if I need to carry a bottle.
