Wish me luck tonight friends...it's time for our high school basketball team's annual fundraiser:  Donkey Basketball!  Yes, riding live donkeys, on our basketball court in a four team tourny:  a jr high/high school teacher team, an elementary teacher team, a student team, and a community team.  Here's hoping I don't fall off my a$$ and land on my a$$!  Good times.  Yee haw.  (Or is that hee haw?)

Don't feel like the lone ranger.  When I got mine 6 years ago they told me to be prepared to fall, "Everybody does."  I learned fast to unclip both feet at stops.  Fell three times I think total due to cars pulling in front unexpectedly, etc.

This is the reason I didn't get clipless pedals when I bought my bike (just went with cages).  I was afraid of not being able to unclip in time.  So what did I do?  Fell over and couldn't get my foot out of the cage in time - I'm a little uncoordinated at timesEmbarassed - ended up with a huge gash on my knee that kept me out of a race last summer.  I "thought" the cages would be easier, but apparently not.  I'm still not sure about getting clipless, but leaning more towards it.

I'm starting to get a little nervous about my half this weekend.  Not sure why, it's not like it's my first one but it will be my first one out of town.  At least I won't be alone.  My mom is driving down with me and I have lots of relatives in Little Rock.  I think it's more just being unfamiliar with the course.  The weather should be pretty good though - 40's with lots of sun.  I'm going to hit the gym today for a swim and one last short run, then pack things up for the trip tomorrow.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Go ahead and get clipless pedals, and yes, everybody falls.  In my case, it took almost 3 years after switching for my first zero-speed tip-over.  That was a ride with guys from work, and the ride leader is riding a fixie doing a track stand (balancing a stopped bike) when I come up, unclip my left foot only to have a gust of wind push me right juuuusssssttttt enough to keep going over in slow motion...

One suggestion for people switching is to have a platform on the side you normally put your foot down and clipless on the other.  Yes, you'll look a bit ridiculous with different shoes on, but not as ridiculous as you will lying on the ground with a bicycle trapped between your feet...This gives you some time to practice the clipless with your "good" foot solidly on the ground.  Once you get comfortable clipping and unclipping the "off" side, replace the holdout platform with the clipless pedal.

Add me to the fallers!  I have fallen countless times...sometimes alone, sometimes with an audience! The worst was coming to a stop in front of my cross country team, couldn't clip out, and fell right over.  Credit to my team--they made sure I was OK before they commenced with the out of control laughter.

This happened to me back when I was in college, I was at the middle of the main intersection of the small town I studied, was riding to school, remember that I told my friend that was riding along to tell everybody that I was hurt so they won't laugh so hard. Laughing

Falling is a right of passage!  Usually, the worst that happens is you get a few scrapes and a bruised ego; however, a woman I work with couldn't unclip in time, fell over and somehow broke both her tibia and fibia.  She now has plates and screws in her leg and has been out of work for over a month!  We're still trying to figure out how she managed such an injury.  It may have something to do with the cobblestones she fell on.

Been there, done that (more than once).  Happens to everyone.  Now you can check that off your list.  First time it happened to me I was more concerned about the scratches to my brand new bike than the scratches on me.

Well, March isn't starting out so good for me.  Tried a little run around the gym....nope, not happening.  There is an orthopedic clinic (part of Illinois Bone and Joint - the biggie around here) that has a walk in clinic.  Thinking of checking them out.  They have evening hours on Thursday which is huge because I really don't want to take a day off to go.  I  already have to take off some time in the next several weeks for medical tests so I don't want to take off anymore.  It's not looking too good for me being able to do the St. Louis  marathon.  I'm so bummed.  I've never had to pull out of a race before.

Missed Steelhead in 2009 (broken collarbone).  Got my 2009 entry rolled over to 2010 and missed that with a staph infection.   It happens.  No dishonor to DNS because you're injured.

Ok, I'm not trying to show off or anything but I've managed not to fall while clipped into my bike, I guess fear of falling keeps my fast twitch muscles at attention!

I had a BRUTAL bike workout yesterday. I've never felt like crying during a workout before. I was supposed to keep up 18mph but less then 1/2 way into the workout I could barely do 11 and I was going all out. I think the instructor set my resistance too high. It sucked and makes me not want to go back. I dont think he knows how to work with novice athletes. I kept thinking HTFU and I did get thru it but I'm thinking this is a sure way to get hurt. I feel like I was in zone 5 for 45 minutes. Is it suposed to be this bad? I keep reading on this website about "no pain, no gain" but when does that cross over into stupid?

Suzimmer I'm so sorry to hear the run isnt happening for you yet. It will again of course but you obviously need more time to heal. I had a foot injury last fall and it took 3 months or so to fully heal. I was in a boot for 6 weeks which helped. I didnt have to drop out of any races but it was a hard time, i was a bit depressed and anxious the whole time. Dropping out of a race must be crushingly dissapointing. Sorry...

Also add me to this list!  Had to drop out of San Diego R-N-R Marathon at mile 11 due to a quad injury that I was determined to 'run through'.  I had to ride on the saggin' wagon to the finish with one other runner...a very pregnant, very tired lady that just decided to stop.  Took months of rest and rehab to get back to it.  It stinks, I know...but know that some of us have been through this too.  Listen to your body and make the best decision for yourself (even though it sucks!)

Thanks for the words of commiseration.  I did end up going to the ortho doc and he wants me to have an MRI.  ARRRG!   Now I'm wishing I hadn't gone.  He's checking for a hip stress fracture.  But it's my quad that hurts..I'm so confused...angry...depressed. I guess I'm going but it sure is a lot of $$$ to confirm a strain. Thank goodness for insurance.   Already made the deductible. Looks like I'll make my out of pocket maximum this year.

Better to know than not to know and waste time wondering.  I had an MRI in fall after my IT band didn't heal according to my time frame.  Wanted to know if it was a stress fracture.  Nope.  It.  Good luck on the results.  I would up doing yoga every day, and rollers every day.

That's frustrating, but as Iceman said, "better to know then not to know".  I'll keep my fingers crossed for a neg. MRI

I feel bad that you're injured.  I'll voice a counter-perspective to the MRI.  What will you you (your doc) do differently if it's a stress fracture in your hip rather than a muscle strain?  Treatment for either is REST and probably more weeks of rest than you want to accept.  If they treatment isn't going to change much, an MRI doesn't offer much value.  Keep in mind that the doctor is running a business, and has a profit motive for using his expensive equipment all the time.

We had the following exchange with the OB during my wife's last pregnancy (the twins are now 18):
Doc:  We'd like to do an ultrasound.
Me:  Why?
Doc:  To get a better estimate of the due date.
Me:  How much better?
Doc:  Um...it'd be ±10 days
Me:  You've already given us a ±10 day estimate (using the old fashioned tape measure and calendar method).
Me:  Here's what I'll do.  You do the ultrasound, and if you're ±2 days, I'll pay, otherwise, no charge.
Doc:  Um...we don't really need it at this time...

(We did end up with the ultrasound a bit later in the pregnancy and then a SECOND ultrasound after that where we found out it was twins.

Bottom line, if you need to rest your leg for 6 weeks.  Rest it for 6 weeks.

Right, "Who cares about YOU, how's the bike?" Ha ha ha. I have been a road biker and a mt biker...not for about 10 years, but seriously...I have never fallen. I know how to fall though...having XC ski background etc. You just have to relax and let it happen. I must say, I think I looked rather graceful. I have VERY thick pads on my glove and I twisted a little to let my arse take most of the fall. No soreness, no scrapes, nada. I did quickly run through ALL the gears though...geesh. Bike is fine! AND my cadence monitor works now!!!

WOO HOO!

I can see both sides of the MRI issue. It's not necessary, of course, but how curious are you? Curiosity killed the cat and will certainly get me. If you can afford it and you want to know...do it. But make yourself go over those logs and see exactly what it is that got you in trouble. It's the learning that will make it worthwhile. Data is great, but you must USE it. You'll have time, because you'll be RESTING. )

Swimming was fun this morning. Fitness is still my biggest issue. I got a very nice complement from the coach on being a natural, effortless swimmer. Spent most of my childhood at the pool, guess it helped. I was in the outside lane though and next to the handicap entrance...and I managed to KICK the side of the entrance with the ball of my right foot. Yes, the same one that's kept me from running. So here I sit with my coffee and my ice wrap. Tomorrow is ocean swimming...with my track record 1. falling off the bike, 2. kicking the wall during swimming, 3. ____ ? getting stung by man-o-war? there are a lot of them out there right now and I don't have a wet suit. Hmmm.
