Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED JJ- - 2013-03-29 12:01 PM I currently use a Gel Flask. Nutrition plan is to just take Gel’s with me on the bike and drink the ironman perform on the run. I’ve though about putting a GU Chomp or something in my fuel box for when I first get on the bike then the remaining time with Gels. Didn’t know if packs would be easier because I have both flask and gel packs.
Good! If you have been using the flask in training use the flask. Try to have something early in the bike ride but not immediately after T1. Wait a few miles and let your heart rate settle down from the swim and transition. After you feel that you are settled in a bit, have a gel or something (I eat fig newtons here) and take in some fluids. How many calories are in Perform? I'm a bit concerned that you will be low on calories. Aim for 200-300 calories per hour if possible. Remember that with both fluids and nutrition, once you get behind you cannot catch back up. Eat/drink early and often. Glad to know the aid station is long and that I’ll have time to top off my speed fill. I do have 2 cages behind the seat if I need to carry a bottle.
When you approach the aid station, drop your trash, ask for what you want (yell "water!" or "gatorade!") and slow way way down. Grab what you need and try to get out of the way. |

That's a big reason I didn't sell it off sooner. |

I think I've had it as an adult, although called conjunctivitis not pink eye. Wonder why we don't call it pink eye when you're an adult. |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED bcraht - 2013-03-29 12:00 PM JJ- - 2013-03-29 4:55 AM Alright Manatees, down to almost 1 week away from my first half iron and A race of the season. I'm trying to go over everything in my head but since I've never attempted this distance before I welcome all and any suggestions/comments. Some say don't take bike pump because there are plenty some say do How long are the aid stations? I have a speed fill 40 ounce so If I slow down to 10 mph will I have enough time to grab a bottle, fill, then throw the bottle in the designated area? Should I use gel packets and throw empties at aid stations or use a gel flask? Apply sunscreen before I put wetsuit on or spray during T1? I have Tri shoes, go sockless for the bike? Never ridden that far sockless. I'm sure I have a bizillion other question but that's all I can think about right now. With my extensive experience (one HIM) beind me: I took my pump. I heard that there were would be lots around too, but I was nervous enough that I didn't need to be looking around for a pump. Got there early, pumped up, lots of time to put pump back in my car. As you come into the aid station, make eye contact with the volunteer so they know you are grabbing from them. I used a flask cause I didn't want to have to try ripping open packages. Sunscreen every chance you get. I still have lines from the burn I got at Calgary last year. Nothing new on Race Day. Wear socks. Two other pointers: 1. Thank every volunteer you go by. They are out there all day in the heat/rain/wind to help you on your race. It's just the right thing to do AND the gratitude helps you get through the day. 2. Have fun and smile! Remember this is supposed to be fun. Smiling will help your body relax, tension will slow you down and make you sore. This is your first race at this distance so ANY time is a PR Excellent advice. I try very hard to do the numbered items as well because they benefit both others and you, plus I do believe in the power of positive thoughts and actions. Thanking volunteers makes them feel good and you as well, and smiling is contagious and makes you feel good to do it. And yes, like Kirsten said, we do this because we like to, so show it! |
