189 Quakertown, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Wow....you skip one day and it takes an hour to catch up... Check-in: 4 workouts for the week now. I did 11.8 on the stationary bike and 3.6 on the treadmill. I wasn't happy with the run at all, I had to nurse myself through it to keep the little twinges from getting me. The legs will get 2 more days of rest before the long run on Sunday. Shirt Update: I received the design kit email for me to review. I approved both designs. The next step towards our own online store is complete. I suspect I'll have a store link shortly. Challenge: I forgot to do the planking yesterday so my plan is to skip tomorrow's rest day to catch up. Yesterday was my day to have one too many beers. I met THAT challenge. GeauxHard Welcome. We're a busy forum in here....try to keep up. We have all types....I fall into the "recent organized runner and have never done a tri" group Alan Sorry to hear about your lack of proper athletic drinking buddies. Sounds you like you need new friends....new VERY thirsty friends. Untappd: "Snewod" is my username. I tend to only record the distinct beers that I try. I'm at 127 distinct beers. Nicole I'm not into the super hoppy beers so give some of the ones I like a try. I have been frequenting various internet list sites to try to keep me motivated. My favorite saying this week: You're not old until your dreams become regrets. |

He has a Felt S16 in my size that he rode. Wants less for it than I was looking to spend on an entry level road bike...I know most recommend a road bike before a tri specific bike, my LBS wouldn't even show me tri bikes..anybody start on a TT bike? I train alone..so not being able to do group rides aren't really a big deal...should hear more about it tomorrow, and he's gonna take some pictures for me. |

I've never had a TT bike but I've read about people who get one first and get used to it quickly. I think a lot of it depends on whether you're brave and naturally good at balancing. I'm a huge wuss and do most of my riding in a very hilly city so a road bike is better for me. Also I don't care too much about how I do in tris. Everyone will tell you to get fitted- that the "Right size" might not be the right geometry for your body, esp on a tri bike. I imagine your coworker has some experience knowing if a fit is in the ballpark of being good and won't lead you astray. |

I started on a tri bike, but I like you ride alone and never had an issue other than wanting to get a new one after my first 2 seasons. If it's a good deal and you like the bike nothing wrong with getting a tri bike. If later on you want to do group rides you can use it or get a used road bike. I am in NY so missed my run yesterday since I drove up and wanted to miss the DC traffic so I was on the road at 3am. Thought about getting up at 2am but then I realized there was no way I was getting up at 0130 to run at 2 then drive 13 hours. I did get in a bike and a swim at the local Y. Going on a run tomorrow. Then driving back Sunday. I was on untapped but didn't know anyone on it. I will get it again and start looking y'all up. I'm pretty sure my username is bluebrew |

New user 669 Madrid | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business .
I have the opposite problem. I plead and beg with my Saturday group ride comrades to go for a beer afterward but no one has ever taken up the offer. In fact, that's why I like this group so much. Some folks have mentioned their love of BDAS being that it's full of 'normal' people. I'm the type that falls into the hyper competitive over zealous annoying professional wannabe-types. But I also like beer. And none of my other hyper competitive over zealous annoying pro wannabe compadres are as excited about chilling out with a delicious IPA as I am. They're more about coffee or tea and trying to emulate the stereotypical European cycling culture... So here I am. I bought a 6 pack of Muskoka IPAs. It's a sampler of ever increasing hoppiness. The first two are 30 IBU, the second are in the 50s range and the third are 94IBU. Delicious stuff. Alan, if it helps, you may comment with your 'hyper competitive over zealous' co-riders trying to emulate the European cycling culture with tea & coffee, that here in Spain, where great cyclists have been born, there is nothing better after a long ride that cooling down with freezing cold beer! Even if we mainly drink pilsner style and too cold for expert beer drinkers.... Juan |

It's up to date now. I'll catch up on the 6 days of posts as soon as I can. Flight home yesterday got delayed and we got home late last night, only for me to have to turn around as soon as I walked in the door to make an emergency vet visit with the cat (and not come home with him... ). Not working out tonight, we have to break the news to my 5yo daughter....Now I have to explain death, cancer, etc...... John - That is some tough news to break. So sorry for you guys! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by whichwayisdown Y'all, I just met with my new trainer and had THE BEST workout. We did the standard first session measurements and stuff, and I did my fastest run/walk intervals ever! I also held a plank in good form for 40 seconds! Clearly the daily planks are helping me get stronger. My trainer teaches spin classes as well, so I'm going to get in on that next week too. I'm honestly on cloud 9 right now, I think this might be the kick in the pants I needed. I didn't realize how competitive I was, it's kind of surprising. Workout: run/walk: 12 minutes, .75 miles. Plank challenge, 40 seconds. General strength training as well. I'm heading out for a walk with a friend I normally drink beer with, so we'll see how it goes. Enjoy the sun today if you have it! Mel - I'm proud of you! It's amazing what a coach can do to get your firing on all cylinders! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by GeauxHard Pretty good day today. Could sleep last night, found myself running at around 4am, Had a solid 1.5mi run. Back up at 10am to lift. Damn good bicep and back day and then jumped on a spin bike for 30 minutes. Legs still sore from Monday's leg workout, but they loosened up a bit after a little time riding. Also did some more bike shopping, seems that most of the entry level road bikes are essentially the same...going to make the decision even harder 0.o Cheers! Devan - One of the keys to buying a bike is finding one that your butt loves. Test ride all the bikes you can get your hands on that are in your price range. While the bikes may seem the same - there's one that will feel right to you. I have an entry level carbon fiber bike and I shopped for weeks until I found one that just felt right. I was on it for less that 5 seconds and I knew. Good luck finding the one for you! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Happy Friday everyone! It's a rest day for me and it came at just the right time. I am starting to feel soreness in my left knee, which always comes when I'm ramping up. Hopefully, the rest day will do it's job so I can get out there this weekend for two good workouts. Hoping to break the hour mark on the bike tomorrow. What does everyone have planned for the weekend? Don't forget to post those pictures. I'm enjoying being able to attach some faces to names. Below, I attached a pic from the race I did with Charles last year - Rev3 Quassy. I always race with my daughters raffe nestled into the wires on the front of my bike. Sometimes I take videos when I'm out on a ride with "raffee" doing the play by play. Alan Trautwig would be proud and my daughter loves it! My untapped name is Qua17 Question - What's do you want the theme to be for next week? Anyone have any burning questions? I last posted yesterday morning and it took me almost 30 minutes to get caught up. The BDAS is on fire! (FullSizeRender.jpg) Attachments ---------------- FullSizeRender.jpg (167KB - 3 downloads) |

I'm currently working on my Educational Specialist/Educational Leadership degree through LSU. More importantly, and specific to your question, I went directly from a Trek 7200 (commuter bike) to an Orbea Triton (tri bike). I rode the Trek, a 38 pound steel beast for my first season and a half. When I hit one of my weight loss goals, I went right to the tri bike. My reasons were 1) I only planned on doing tris and 2) I trained alone because of my schedule, so no need for a road bike. Now that I've been at this crazy game for 5+ years, I'm finally looking to get a road bike. That mentality goes along the lines of "how many bikes should one have?" It's either n+1 or s-1, whereas n equals the number of bikes you currently have and s equals the number of bikes your wife will allow you to have before filing for divorce. Good luck with the bike, that Felt is a nice bike. Several members of our team ride them for races. |

Expert 1051 Bradenton, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Ok, it's been an incredibly busy week for me. One online class wrapping up, 2 more starting, getting close to the end of the quarter at the high school, school accreditation visit, annual observation, multiple events to cover, including a double iron distance triathlon, and family coming in from the great white north for their spring break, and.... I've managed to get in a workout on all but 2 of the last 10 days! Still trying to catch up on a weeks worth of posts. Holy cow does this forum move fast! I forgot, today is my 38th birthday! Went out for deep dish Chicago style pizza with the family. The kitchen burnt the first pizza, so the manager comped our bill because we had to wait almost an hour to get our food. Well worth the wait and had plenty of time to catch up with the boys. Edited by cwpeters 2015-03-13 10:01 PM (Pizza dinner.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Pizza dinner.jpg (67KB - 4 downloads) |

Its an older model S32, looks in pretty great condition, 105 components, look pedals, some other stuff included, he's asking $550 for it. Gonna see if he will allow me to take it to my LBS to get it an overlook and make sure it will be a decent fit for me. If so, a new wheelset and a tune up and it will be ready to race. Fingers crossed! |

Extreme Veteran 1648 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Cool Devan! If it's older look into if it needs the cabling redone (I had this done on my mtn bike last fall and it shifts so much smoother- and makes me feel like I actually got some pretty good use of the bike over the past two seasons.) Love the pic Dave! I need to find one to post- I'm always behind the camera instead of in front of it. I had some spring oops training yesterday. Rode my mtn bike with trailer to pick up my daughter from pre-school (4.7 miles out and the teachers told me about a short cut so 3.7 miles back - almost all gravel path). I forgot I need to lock my rear shock out for the trailer- so my husband caught up with us running about a mile from home and pointed it out and how hot the trailer attach was from sitting on the rear wheel. Oops- big mechanical brake- I guess I'm not as out of shape as I was feeling, but it was a good strength workout ;-). Today and tomorrow are ski days. Will try and get a swim in and contemplating a run trying a run walk interval to acclimate to 9000 ft. I've never done purposeful run walks- anyone have advice on how you choose intervals? I'd rather do this than run for 10 minutes, feel like puking and stop ;-) |

1007 DeLand, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Devan - the Felt sounds awesome. Did a little research and the value is a pretty wide range depending on year but if its in great shape I'd have a really hard time saying no to that for $550! These are suggestions based on sale prices and by no means the be all end all but find out roughly what year it is and have a look here: http://www.bicyclebluebook.com/SearchListing.aspx?make=1006&model=5... Also if its an 08-10 there was a recall on the forks so make sure it's been taken care of if so. Oh yeah and post some pics if/when you buy it - we love bike p0rn around here! |

My first 1000yd swim last Monday was awesome and I can't wait to improve on it this coming Monday. Got some PT and core work in on Thursday. Had my hour of boot camp style Personal Training this morning. Tomorrow is spin then a run. Oh yeah I've been trying to stay ahead of the plank challenge in terms of number of seconds. Today I hit 1:45 (105 secs) so 120 is right around the corner. Keep at it everyone! Love that the fire is burning at BDAS! |

7 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Finally was able to take the stead out for a ride yesterday. I did only 5.5 mi, but it was awesome!!! Looking forward to getting another ride in tomorrow. It's supposed to be nicer then, back in the lower 40s today. Spring break ends Sunday and it's back to the grind to get this schooling over with. Hopefully, I can check in a few times a week and continue to train. Late April, a few weeks before finals is when it will really get busy. Dave- Having a daughter play at the next level is AWESOME!!! She was a basketball player all the way to her junior year in high school and I just thought she'd play through high school and head off to college and be the recreational player/athlete. I never expected the lacrosse thing to work out. Even at the D3 level, coaches were calling every week trying to get her to come visit or convince her to go somewhere else. She's in a good program and in with a good group of teammates. It was great to see her play, and I couldn't believe how much she had improved in the short amount of time they've had to work out and practice. I'm just very proud of her.....if you can't tell. Expert 1051 Bradenton, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Got in my longest ride of the year this morning, 40 miles through NW Bradenton and Anna Maria Island. Only had 2 close calls, the first with a lady that pulled out directly in front of me from a side street with no one coming in either direction and the 2nd when a Marine Patrol truck decided not to wait for the car in front of him to make a left turn and tried to pass using the bike lane, which I was occupying at the time. I will be calling a supervisor on that one Monday morning. I know I've been posting a lot of pictures, but I had to share the following shots from my last swim at the Y. I only managed to see this page so I'm sure there is a bunch I've missed. I noticed "Untappd" was mentioned, feel free to friend me at "malklavious" and I sent a couple friend requests to those names I saw above. So far I've recorded 239 unique beers over the last couple of years (wow!), at least 75% of which have been IPA's. Today I went for a 9 mile run with my running group of co-workers as we prepare for an upcoming half marathon. The route was the hilly portion of the h'M and the way back was rough. I've been biking to work more often for some time in the saddle as well. With the time change behind us I can get back into my weekly ocean swims! |

Good luck with the bike, that Felt is a nice bike. Several members of our team ride them for races. With my wife, the formula gets a little more complicated: S-1 = N+(1+L+P), where L is a designer pair of shoes (like Christian Louboutin or Jimmy Choo, etc) and P is a designer purse. So, essentially, it more or less doubles the bike purchase cost. Two things are funny about this fact:

423 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Just finished up my second round of power tests. I saw some huge gains in short term power and some modest gains in FTP (1.8% putting me at 283watts FTP). This is to be expected. I just finished my first build period, which focused less on FTP and more on VO2 and anaerobic power. Overall I've seen a 42.2% increase in FTP since Halloween (when I started 2015 training), so it's only natural my FTP increase is tapering off. I can probably expect to see some more drastic short term power increases as I continue to ramp up anaerobic training. I'm hoping to hit 300FTP by the end of May for amateur world qualifiers. Heres my power profile, testing every 4 weeks since Oct 26.

141 Colorado Springs, Colorado | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Well, didn't get off work until 5am this morning despite weasling my way into an early start time, so my planned run didn't go as plan early this morning. Decided to get some sleep and hit the weights early this afternoon. Pretty good day, gym was fairly empty thanks to St Patrick's day and a college town. Going to try and squeeze a quick run in before work. Firebert, thanks for the heads up on the bluebook link. From the looks of the photos comparing the different years, it looks like it is a 2009..was it just years 08 and 10 that had the recall? Or was it 08-10? If that component list is correct, it looks like there is dura ace shifters on it, which is definitely a plus..getting a tri specific bike for $100 less than the entry level road bike I'm looking at is a hell of a deal..especially with extras included. I know it was kept up very well, he took the time to learn how to take care and maintain it, some cleaning and tuning might be the only thing needed if it's been sitting for a little while, but that shouldn't be too bad. |

I focused on keeping my stroke nice even when tired. I'll need more work on this. Beer In order to keep focused on my goals, I've been keeping beer out of the house. That way it becomes more of a reward for hard work. We had family over on Sunday so I needed to pick up a case for the visitors. They didn't drink it all. I've taken it upon myself to get the beer out of the house since it's distracting me from being goal focused. I'm using the "Drink it" method for eliminating the beer. I've almost completed my goal. I should be back to complete workout focus by next week. The things we have to do to stay focused on our exercise goals... |
