So glad she was successful. What a journey, what a memory. And now, after a few days off the trail, she's going to hike the rest of the Vermont Long Trail. Apparently, about half of it is also the AT, so she's just going to finish it off. That is fantastic! I would say she must have quite enjoyed herself. I am really impressed by thru-hikers. I don't know how I would deal with the solitude. She was actually with people most of the time, so there wasn't that much solitude. Of course, if you want it you can hike on your own, but most of the time she was hiking with friends she made along the way. |

I can't believe it! It's such a strange thing to train for in that the mileage is a HM but the endurance part is more marathon-like. Tapering is already such a weird thing without that kind of complexity! Right now they are predicting great weather. Hopefully the T-storms will hold out till the afternoon (as is normal for Colorado). I did a trail in Taos yesterday and about 3 miles in the legs were letting me know that it is time to give them a break and begin the taper. The PPA plan they've been emailing out mentions no climbing for the last week so I think I'll take that advice. Any running I do will be as flat as I can get in this area. So excited for you two!! What are your estimated times? I want to be sure I'm there at the finish when you come in but would like to sleep in if I can. I'm afraid you've got a tortoise and a hare to cheer home . I'm sure Salty will be super duper speedy. I, on the other hand, am hoping for a 5 hour finish. My wave starts about 20 minutes after Salty as well. DH will be there to greet me if you'd rather go down to the festivities at the park with Salty and wait for me there. I'd like to be on the course to provide some encouragement if I can. If they'll let me, I'll try to hike (very carefully!!!!) a little way down from the finish to cheer for you. Salty, since I've never met you, look for the woman wearing a Team RWB shirt and white hat. I'm also going to see if my friend will loan me her kids' maracas (you know, Manatee Maracas!!) and will be dancing and hollering like an idiot for everybody to the extent possible given the altitude. I'm not sure you'll want to hang out at the expo/party until I come back down because I'll probably stay there until the last racer goes by. Don't know why I do that; I just end up feeling an obligation to be there for all the racers, not only the ones I know. RWB. White hat. Maracas. Got it. Haha. Well, it doesn't sound like us racers are allowed to spend too much time at the top so I am not sure what my plan is. I will check some warm clothes at sweat check because I KNOW how quickly you get cold when you go from sweaty running to being idle on top of a mountain. I'm not a big expo/finish party person so I will likely go back and shower and then find some beer. Might watch the awards as they will be later. Still want to do the brewery tour in the evening? If not, maybe we could all just hang out where you or TJ are staying and I could pick up a sampling of good local brews. Um, yes! For sure! I am totally in for brewery touring. I am more talking about the time between my finishing and TJ. I'd like to stay at the top for her finish but I am guessing it's not really an option. |

I'd like to see the awards if Salty is getting one My hotel doesn't allow alcohol It also doesn't have TV's but DH assured me he'd be ok without the afore mentioned items in the room. Salty are you going to the pasta dinner Friday night? I'm thinking the 60th anniversary presentation might be cool. I should re-read the book while we drive to Colorado (AGAIN) this weekend. Award HAHAHA Hotel doesn't allow alcohol? What in theeeee? I wasn't sure what I was going to do for dinner. I am a big fan of pho before a race, actually. LOL. Not sure of the availability of Vietnamese in Colorado Springs but I bet I can find something. But I might consider the pasta dinner. I will have to look into it. The big crazy crowds tend to exhaust me.
I'm sure you can find pho in CoSpgs. Just use urbanspoon or the like for good recommendations. |

I, for one, was road tripping to Colorado for the 3rd time in 4 weeks This was the weekend that nobody was racing so no RR to read today I'm acting manager for the next two weeks at work so I'll be busy, but I'll be keeping up on the shenanigans herein

Now that my knee is better, though, I'm going to work on increasing mileage--if I can find a way to do it without blowing up in the heat. I might have to take desperate measures and do my longer run on a weekend morning. Morning! That really is desperate! Funny how I can get up for a race at o'dark 30 with no problem but training in the morning is virtually impossible. |

I looked at a couple of options for us still going to cheer and hang out, but hard to justify a 12+ hour drive or $700+ for flights, and Taylor out of school for me being a non-racer |

Glad you're getting the knee checked. That's gone on long enough! I'm thinking the brewery tour will help keep the pain at bay, although depending on how much imbibing there is, it may inflict yet more pain!! |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees 2015.3 CLOSED (or Poptarts? Pet pics?) Did my last training run up Mailbox Peak. It's funny, just 2 years ago I had done this hike and decided that running and mountaineering/hiking just didn't work well together. Which, without balance of vertical and a more lateral-err forward movement, it doesn't. But this time I not only did it without feeling completely terrible but I RAN it. I would have never thought the combination was possible!

Which, without balance of vertical and a more lateral-err forward movement, it doesn't. But this time I not only did it without feeling completely terrible but I RAN it. I would have never thought the combination was possible!

Wow! You did your "unthinkable" Did you leave shoe(s) here last time? YES! I just so happened to have my running shoes in my pack last time and the trail shoes (North Face) I was wearing were AWFUL. So the whole thing with the mailbox is you can take something out if you leave something. I left my shoes and we took a shirt |

I still think that he was mistaken. Stacey I'm glad you got out to enjoy the garden. Sometimes I think as spring approaches any sunny day starts to feel warmer. I think we were all out doing Manatee things this weekend. I, for one, was road tripping to Colorado for the 3rd time in 4 weeks This was the weekend that nobody was racing so no RR to read today I'm acting manager for the next two weeks at work so I'll be busy, but I'll be keeping up on the shenanigans herein Spring garden time is the best!! I managed to get a couple RRs done for my XC races. Almost done with the Evergreen RR; hoping to finally finish it up tomorrow but no promises. Oh, it looks like we'll be in town the weekend of the Hot Chocolate so I was thinking of doing the 15k. However, the 15k starts at 7:50 while the 5k starts at 7?! What the...??!! Buuuut the 15k has a cool medal My SIL is doing the 5k At the rate I've been running these days, I don't think I'd be up for a 15k. The price goes up again mid September so I suppose I could wait a few weeks to decide. If you and SIL are both doing the 5k I might hafta do that. Don't let us slow you down or keep you from getting good bling! If you do the 15k, I'd definitely stick around to cheer for you. Oh, and to eat more chocolate. So back to this one... Did you see that the "preferred" corrals are anyone faster than 11:30? Fortunately my 2012 Hot Chocolate race would qualify. |

I have my RR done but it's really long so I'm afraid to post it.... DH did the 15k Hot Chocolate run last year. Yes, the 5k starts first and then the 15k. The medals are really neat and the 15k jacket is awesome. Not sure if he's going to do it again this year or not. The aid stations did run out of food and I think he said water so be prepared. Since he and my coach wouldn't let me run it last year, I stole DH's chocolate at the end of the race. |
