Extreme Veteran 490 Higganum, Connecticut | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Originally posted by ccmpsyd Todd - Sorry to hear about the recent training experiences. Have you done your Oly yet or is it this weekend. If it is this weekend, I am sending good mo jo your way. Funny thing, my coach said to leave the sneakers in the car (obviously to avoid the temtation of running), well I brought them, set them up in transition, checked in at the table, and learned they were holding an Aquabike. I thought about it for a few seconds and said to myself that I should switch my registration and force myself to commit to the swim/bike, otherwise I'll do the run, make my injuries worse, and ruin 8 months of training - so I did... I ended up doing the Aquabike - my first ever - it was a nice change! I had a good time, blasting through my best swim ever 25:45 for a mile, then a 24.9mph average on the 26 mile bike!! (Yeah, it was really flat and you could HAMMER the bike as hard as you could, knowing there wasn't a run afterward.) I ended up 1st overall for the Aquabike and with my average 10k run "could have" placed well in the regular tri (granted my bike would of been slower by a bit) if I were able to run. I've read through a ton of posts here and on the Ironman Lake Placid pages regarding these last minute injuries and WORSE YET, major bike accidents where people crash and get injured, broken equipment, etc. I am so greatful to be managing my little inflamation injury and dealing with it in a realistic way. I'll start back up with easy, short ZR runs this weekend, and when it comes time to do the marathon on 7/28, it will be - what it will be... I'm okay with it, and looking forward to doing the 4 minute run by 1 minute walk. It will be an amazing experience and may be in tears at the end of it all - but I will get through it. There are so many cool people that you meet along this journey, it's impossible to put it into words - we all go through the similar learning curves, even if we don't ask the questions openly, they are in our heads, and we wonder about the same things, sometimes greatful that another person asked first. I've hit highs where I say "yeah, it would be cool to work toward improving until I could qualify for Kona at age 65" or something insane like that, and hit lows where I say "...this is it for me, after LP, I'm done.". I guess it's part of the process - we are each leaning and growing as we go. |

Extreme Veteran 863 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Originally posted by ccmpsyd I apologize folks for being AWOL for a bit. While being self-employed has its advantages, taking time off means being really backed up with stuff. This, coupled with training, has resulted in exhaustion at night. We have had two sick dogs and have been nursing a chicken who was attacked by a fox (resulting in two ER visits, and believe it or not xrays and a cast for her broken leg). I have been so sleep deprived that yesterday morning I began making oatmeal on the burner (using a double boiler) and forgot to add water. I have never seen a copper pan almost catch fire. I also hate to admit but I have done some micro-nods while with patients. I lost my cell phone the other day and had to buy a new one. In spite of my exhaustion, my training seems to be going well. Did 3x20 min run test the other weekend and was pretty pleased with the result. Pretty pleased with my rides and I haven't died while doing my OWS and my back and shoulder seems to be recouping....so I've got that going for me. Sounds like you need some recovery that includes SLEEP!!!! How is the chicken dealing with the cast? |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Had a funny and kind of cool moment on my long ride today. I was cruising along and happened upon one of those mobile speed detection things that the police set up and it clocked me at 32 and thanked me for driving safely as it was a 35mph zone. I kinda laughed. |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed 15 mile bike this morning. Still working hard on getting the house prepped to sell. Working around the house is so much harder than tri training. There was a comedian twenty years back who did a routine on how making people who break the law move would be a better crime deterrent than prison. It's only funny because it's sadly true. Five hours on the bike or 5 hours doing yards work........no brainer. |

Extreme Veteran 668 NW Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed I got a day behind on my long workouts this weekend, so 62 for me on the bike yesterday. Feeling it this morning. It was a good experience for me, though. I need to make some adjustments to my fueling for next weekend. I've got a 75 minute run this afternoon and I'm hoping the rain will hold off for a change. Since I am a fairly slow runner, should I be adding more time to my runs to build up a little more distance? A 75 minute run for me right now is around a 10K give or take a few tenths. I'm just starting to get concerned that my bike mileage is building while my running really is not. |

I cannot reiterate how important sleep is. The only training that makes you faster is trianing that you can recover from. If you're doing tons of traing, not recovering and not sleeping all that training essentially amounts to junk miles. Recovering from the training is just as important as the training itself. |
