Yesterday I got back from IM Port Macquarie where we cheered our friend in his Ironman race. He made it and was beyond himself. What an atmosphere! Hard to describe it. It brought back all the emotions I remember from 4 years ago. Yes, 4 years ago. Time flies...

Mark H, congratulations on great time!

Diddo Mark....What an atmosphere. As you know my wife and I watched IRONMAN Texas last year as spectators on the run and it was unbelievable. We wanted to become more of a part of the event so we volunteered for an Aid Station on the run. I consider myself to be very fortunate to live in a community that hosts an event like the Ironman triathlon. It also doesn't hurt to live only miles from transition area either.

The event is only 2 weeks away and in the last year I have made several new friends who will be doing the Ironman for the first time. I have been training with several of them on bike rides and OWS, seeing first hand the work that goes in to doing a full distance triathlon. NOTHING but respect for anyone who attempts an Ironman triathlon.

@Dave-Thank you!

35 minute masters swim this morning. Should have been an hour but after being sick for a week and not swimming for almost 2 weeks I just wasn't feeling it this morning.

Question for the group - how many of you run without socks? I've never raced without socks before, mainly because my old bike shoes weren't very comfortable without them, but I have new bike shoes and that's no longer an issue. I've tried running sockless in all my current running shoes and I can't go more than 2 miles in any of them without getting pretty serious blisters. For HIM and IM I can understand taking the time to put on socks but for sprints and Oly's I feel like I should be able to go sockless and save some transition time. Anyone have any advice or shoes that have worked well? For reference my go-to running shoe is the Saucony Virrata but I also run in Topo's and NB Minimus.

Photo shopped Beth. A few people on Facebook are using it as their profile picture with their bib number. Below is the REAL Exit 77 sign, that is where I exit the freeway everyday on the way home.

45 minutes on Zwift Island. Mitch I don't know how you have the control to follow a plan when doing that! It turns into a long interval for me and I spend the entire time racing someone.

For sprints and Oly no socks; 70.3 definitely wear socks and keep dry pair for bike incase I pee too much.

Ultimately think how much time will you really save in TX putting on socks verse benefit of comfort during run?

In my 70.3 race on Saturday I had the 12th fastest T2 split out of ~200 men and I changed my wet bike socks for dry running socks - no more than 5 secs off/on.

I have been running sockless for several years now. I have never worn socks in a triathlon. I run in Zoots and the TT 6.0 have been the best shoes. Every time I get new shoes I will wear them around the house for a few days like slippers. You will get a good feel for were the hot spots are. The first few runs I will apply generous amounts of body glide on my feet. It does not always prevent blisters. If you do get a blister, give it a rest for a day or two then cover it with a band aid until the blister callouses. Once you have a callous in the hot spots, you are good to go.

Check my transition times in my race reports. T-1 is usually under 4 minutes, the fastest being 2:39. I had a couple ties I blew the transition, like one time I dropped all of my food for the entire race on the ground. T-2 under 2 minutes the fastest 34 seconds. It is the one area I am actually fast. I should sponsor an award next year for the fastest transition, I think I could win it.

Edit: I meant to ask about you sockless folks about these callouses. Between the pool and other aqua activities and my regular pedicures there is absolutely no way to build them. How long does that process take you guys?
I will waste the 10 seconds and put my socks on, I'm just not that dedicated to build them I think.

was traveling for work the last few days. Another hotel fitness center bike ride yesterday and a run around the resort today. 2 rounds of golf that don't count.

Jim - my trainer rides have had longer intervals a lot of the time that work well with Zwift. Go relatively strong for 20 or 30 minutes then ride easy for 5. I do occasionally go harder n some of the climbs. I've gotten wary of sprinting to hard on the trainer. The discipline comes in letting a rider go who you've been pacing with for a while. I'll be back on it tomorrow morning.

I seem to have done a great job building up callouses on my heels. They are a mess.

Mark Z and Dennis, kuddos to both for helping out at the IM races!  Dennis, IM Texas was my first IM in 2012 and it was incredible experience (really tough with the heat at the end) and could not had done it without the great volunteer support!

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
