Happy Sunday! I wanted to report that I had a really great race yesterday. I ended up winning overall, which was definitely my goal. I got 2nd my first year competing in this race and 4th last year. I trained more for this race than any previous, and it really paid off. One girl did almost catch me (she finished like, half a second behind me). I didn't have much left but I had just enough to not let her get me!

I celebrated with a beer flight at a local brewpub. Then went and played football and had a wedding last night. Needless to say, I am completely wiped out today. And dancing last night was hard b/c my legs were extremely sore. The link below are the results from the race. I will try to write up a RR today or tomorrow. Now I need to study for my chemistry midterm that is on Tuesday...so tired.

First workout back after failed HIM attempt last Sunday--a short swim (1300yds). It felt pretty good, but I did take a lot of harassment from the masters coach, who was at the pool getting his own lunchtime workout in. Ankle didn't hurt, but I did some pulling and very easy push offs the wall.

Congragulations on the win, and thanks for the race report. You're crushing it at the moment.

Another short swim for me today. Honestly, I'm starting to get back that feeling for going long. I only had time for a 30' swim. When I had to get out, I was bummed. All things pointing to recovery?

Foot/ankle still in brace with RICE instructions, but it is feeling much better of late, so maybe I'll try biking at some point soon. Just maybe though. :P

A little over a 5 mile run this morning. Started out nice and easy and picked it up a little bit at the end (not much). This was my first non-race run in two weeks so just wanted to get my legs moving. Will try to do something with some speed over the weekend.

Got in two good swim this week, two short bike sessions and a TON of strength training and core work.  Celebrated by getting three (!!!) facet injections yesterday.

Taking a couple of days off to let the medicine do its magic, then back at it next week.  Pain doc people think they'll get me back to where I was before (you know, doing that running thing which just happens to be a requirement of our sport LOL).

Happy Purple Friday!!!

Take it real easy with that foot/ankle thing...better than having it become chronic.  My right ankle is so messed up from volleyball and basketball I can turn my ankle to the side and almost walk on the ball of my ankle.   Let me know if you want any rehab tricks.  My goto back in the day was the old Stairmaster.

I got brave and went for a walk yesterday, my first day out of the brace. Ugh...for as short of a walk as it was, my foot was twinging. I don't like that! The dog wasn't too impressed with the speed either. She really misses our runs.

Lunchtime swim scheduled for today!

Slow but sure progress...I'm sure walking out of the brace made some scar tissue come loose.

After a weekend of doing almost nothing (similar to our local football team...), I got in about a mile in the pool yesterday and 30 minutes on the bike this morning with about a half hour of strength and core work both days.  Back is still tender from the injections as expected - it takes about a week for that to subside.  Icing it down now (the treatment, not the cake topping...).

Everybody pretty much done racing for the year?

I have also not been very active for the past week and a half. I have the Baltimore Running Festival this weekend in which I am running a leg of the relay, but think I will be pretty slow since I have not really run much lately. Hope to get a run in this afternoon (it was really cold and dark this morning :-/).

Made it to the pool for a midday workout--1200yds. Foot hurt on the push offs some, so I think tomorrow might be an off day (or, maybe I'll "ride" one of those hand cycle bikes at the gym).

Short swim (1050yds) today at lunch time. I'm rediscovering my lunchtime gym buddies, but certainly missing my 5:30am gym buddies.

Foot still hurting. Not liking where this is going (i.e., another dr visit). Wife comes home from business trip on Sunday and says if it still hurts by then she is sending me back to the doctor for more extensive scans to find out what is wrong. A bully with my best interest at heart. :P

I have not done much this week. I hate the dark mornings, they severely kill my motivation.

Have the Baltimore running festival tomorrow, so I'm running a solid 6.3 miles through the city. I run right by my house so will have a cheering section in my neighbors who have decided to tailgate the event I'm doing it more for fun so don't really have a goal time or anything. This is a huge event though and I've lived here almost 10 years and have never participated, so I figured now would be a good time since I trained for longer distances while training for my oly.

The running festival yesterday was really awesome! It was a long day for me. I went to the start even though I was running the third leg, so woke up around 5:45am. I biked there, which was the greatest decision ever. My team ran it in 3:58.33, and got 15th in the female relay out of 197 teams. Not too shabby! I felt great on my leg but have no idea what my times or pace was. I think it took me about 50 minutes to run 6.3 miles, and I felt good so I'm really happy with it.

Accidentally asked for sour beer after the race, so I didn't love it but it could've been worse. Had football later, and then a halloween party so I'm pretty exhausted and sore today! I hope everyone else had a great weekend!

Nicole, that running fest sounds awesome!! I wish we had more fun stuff like that around here, but it is so rural that a local 5K is a big deal!

I'm still riding the DL with this stupid foot/ankle thing. It has been three weeks of rest (or at least, mostly rest). I'm hating it! This morning I went to the gym and "rode" a "bike". I'm not sure what this piece of equipment is called, but it has both pedals and hand cranks. So, I did 15 minutes with both arms and legs, 5' with just arms; 5' arms and legs, and finished with 5' of just arms again. So, 20' total of leg work. My ankle is very tight, boarding on painful. I think I am going to have to break down and go back to the doctor. Ugh--I hate going to the doctor! Going to try to get a referral to a specialist.

How's everyone else going lately?

Gretchen, people come from all over for this festival. You should try to make it out here sometime! I think they even show it on TV.

That SUCKS about your ankle. Let us know how the doctor goes. Hopefully it is nothing serious but better to check it out and maybe get a special brace or something to help it heal faster so you can get back to the grind sooner!

I put on my big-girl panties and finally called the sports med doctor this morning. Of course, they only do appointments on Mon and Tuesday. This being Wednesday...grrr. My appointment is on Nov 7! Two weeks away!! I asked what I should do if the issue clears up before then, just in case. I doubt it will, seeing as how it has been three weeks since my race and it still isn't feeling right. Hoping someone cancels for next week and they call me.

1300 yds at the pool today, mostly as varying sets of 50s. Way too much pulling for my taste, but my foot hurts if I kick too much, so pulling or nothing.

Swam in the lane between my swim coach and his wife (both former college swimmers, both currently swim coaches)--humbling, to say the least!

I swim at the same time as my daughter's swim team.  They do their kick sets faster than my paddles.

I've been going to the gym a lot lately (Sat/Mon/Tue/Wed) doing relatively small doses of SBR (well, walking on an incline is my R for now...) and lots of strength training and core work.  The good news - back is improving and I'm getting a lot stronger.  The bad news - I'm gaining weight.

Had my yearly physical and topped the scales at about 208, 12 pounds higher than my "race weight" and 8 above normal.  Resting pulse of 44, BP 122/78, nice little spare tire around my belly.

I think I gotta stop drinkin' the IPAs.

Taking a day off today - the weight training does take a lot out of me.  Trainer ride tomorrow.
