I'm out.  That is more beer (or anything) then I would drink in a month let alone one day  But I'll be cheering you all from the sidelines.

evondo - 2010-02-02 7:32 AM Mentor group challenge?!?!Thanks to smilford for the idea of the 'beer mile', was wondering if our group would be interested in challenging some of the other MGs in a beer mile. What is the format of a beer mile you might ask...

Drink a beer / run 0.25mi
Drink a beer / run 0.25mi
Drink a beer / run 0.25mi
Drink a beer / run 0.25mi

If at any point you throw up during the beer mile you do one extra penalty lap. Now I know some people aren't keen on beer, I suggest those people are allowed to take a shot + 12oz carbonated beverage.

How do we win? Scores are normalized off your 5K PR, if you don't have one we'll accept your best guess and trust your honesty unless of course you win! So for example sake lets say my 5K PR is 8:00/mi pace. I complete my beer mile in 8:30 my score is +30, if I complete my mile in 7:45 my score is -15. This way it doesn't matter if you're a 5:00/mi runner or 15:00/mi. We'll average everyone's score in the MG and the lowest scoring MG wins!

This event is best done with some friends in a place where you won't get in trouble and you have until the end of Feb to get your beer mile in. I of course take no responsibility for anything that may happen to you or anyone joining this adventure, this is at your own risk! There are all sorts of nit picky rules that if we have enough interest I'll send out like no shot gunning, no pre-opened cans, etc...

Who's in? If you're thinking no and haven't gotten Justin a b-day present you might want to rethink your answer!

Trin2bfast - 2010-02-02 9:48 AMRunning or not... I am in!  We pick our own beer?  I don't want no Johnny D 'Guiness Specials'! Me thinks the Bud Select 55 is a good choice! Ha!   No wait, the new Shiner 101!

Bring on that weenie group SwBkRun & their ugly step sister... smilford's group!

Only weenies do this event in Seabrook!

smilford - 2010-02-02 9:50 AM While not in my mentor group, we've got a couple 2:30 marathoners coming out for our beer mile in seabrook. They can also drink rather well.

Happy birthday Justin & Emma's Pooch!

Hmm...a beer run. Sounds interesting enough, but I'll have to mull it over for a bit. Two years ago I could definitely drink that much beer and definitely not run that far. Today I could definitely crush that run, but I'm not at all confident in my drinking abilities anymore. I'm usually one-and-done (if I indulge in a drink at all).

Darn, a month ago when my beer training was at its peak I would have killed at this.  But now I'm completely off all alcohol in an attempt to lose those holiday pounds.

I wrote about 4/5 of a fairly long self-assessment for January last night, and the bottom of my hand grazed the touchpad and killed the window.  Netbooks are not good for authoring.  The gist, though, was that I'm satisfied (enough) with my training for January, two weeks of which was my HIM program.  I've managed to keep my recurring soleus issues at bay, and I'm feeling comfortable with the change to a mid-foot strike.  The only thing that's bumming me out is that I don't seem to be losing those holiday pounds the way I expected to.  In fact, since beginning my HIM plan I have GAINED three pounds!

Justin:  you think you're in pain now?  Just wait until you hit 45.  Happy Birthday though, and enjoy your relative youth while you can!

One thought to add to already great advice is to consider aqua jogging.  A couple of marathoners at my gym introduced me to it when my knee blew up last year.  I found it helped keep the fitness up while the knee took some time off from impact.  Caution, it is rather boring but I found that watching some of the more creative swim strokes broke it up a bit.

evondo - 2010-02-02 10:42 AM Keep all runs light and to treadmill/clay, absolutely no pavement/concrete. If the easy running isn't bothering it, I'd do that as much as possible and it might even feel better doing 5x3mi instead of 3x5mi runs. If it still comes/goes while easy running, stop all together. Become a biking machine, you happen to have a new toy to play with too
Trin2bfast - 2010-02-02 9:28 AMQuestion for the group:

I am certain (although not officially diagnosed) I have an injured IT Band on my right knee.  The symptoms are exactly the same as what I have researched & discussed with an elite runner friend who suffered the same injury.  He recommended 6-8 weeks off from running altogether... not feasbale ~ just gonna be straight up with that!  My leg would have to be broken for me to do that!

However, I ran Monday morning and no pain on the treadmill at a very easy pace only up to 5 miles.  My knee usually starts to bother me between the 5 - 6 mile marks when I run outside.  So, I am thinking that I take the entire month of February off from running (4 weeks) and then start building back March 1st... in time for the two races Oly & HIM at the end of April. Or continue with 2-3 easy 5 milers a week and see how the knee feels. If no pain, then continue with that regimine until March.  Most of the runs may be on a treadmill for added easy on the joints.

If it were you... what would you do?  Cycling does not seem to bother it, so I will continue and look to really build on that this month.  The stairmaster doesn't seem to bother it either...but that may simply be, that I don't go far enough to push that threshold.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and/or advice.

To jump into your mentor thread...

I say as triathletes we have more to gain from just cycling more and swimming more when faced without being able to run.

Yes - those of us 40-44 in 2010 are racing for second when Mr. Power Tap / MDot Justin shows up.

As long as Fatty gives him hell in the swim others start to have a fighting chance.

Maybe I can just switch to the 1 Mile Fun Run and redefine what a 'fun run' is supposed to be!!

gavisk - 2010-02-02 1:55 PM Live a little, Kevin:  do it as the first mile of your 5k this weekend!

kjivie - 2010-02-02 12:53 PM I'll have a go!  Need to do it before I set a new PR in my 5K this weekend though!

evondo - 2010-02-02 9:32 AM Mentor group challenge?!?!Thanks to smilford for the idea of the 'beer mile', was wondering if our group would be interested in challenging some of the other MGs in a beer mile.

Well, after further research I will pass on spending any money on this issue.  I will focus on my bike & swim... I have to run on Friday for my department's physical agility test (1.5 mile run, 300m sprint & agility/shuttle run). But I will take the next 4 weeks off from running.  Everything I have read ~ indicates that the only 'real' treatment for ITBS is * rest ~ stretch ~ ice ~ compression ~ anti-inflamatories *   So, if that means I lose a little run fitness between now and then... so be it! I will however, be stronger on the bike and get my swim on!  And come Buffalo Springs ~ I will be healthy enough to run up & down 3 big hills!

Good luck with your choice Keri, I really hope it works for ya and please let us know if the treatment works.

KeriKadi - 2010-02-02 9:34 AM I think your friend is right but that doesn't work for me either.  Not to mention I took off almost 4 weeks and it didn't get better at all.  A note of warning - my IT band pain used to kick in around 4 miles then 2 now 1.5 or less.  My worry is that I could take another 4-6 weeks off and it wouldn't help at all and then where would I be?

I am considering some ART therapy http://www.activerelease.com/ There are a few providers in our area that specialize with athletes.  It isn't going to be cheap but the good news is most folks say you only need 1-3 visits.  How much is pain free running worth?

Crap - I never did the math on my 5k PR - 7:16 splits.  With 4 beers this is going to be interesting.

I KENOTT swim - 2010-02-02 3:39 PM I'm in.

I am fairly certain I see a penalty lap in my future.

Ha... you're faster then me Ken ~ my recorded PR for a 5K is a 7:33 pace. I'll take those 17 seconds! Enjoy the beer a bit more!

Aqua jogging & the lighter treadmill workouts are both great recommendations... But the ITBS issue is aggravated (based on three different articles/web sites I read) from bending the knee 30 degrees or more.  Cycling has been known to aggravate it as well... so I will remain very much in touch with how I feel on the bike the next few weeks.  Riding 1:20 last night, I did not feel any discomfort or stress on it... but it also says that, although it may not cause the same pain as running, it can retard the healing process.  I have read an exercise to aid in the stretching & strengthening of the IT band... but it is confusing.  I am looking for a visual.

Using the rolling pin (in lieu of 'The Stick or Trigger Point') I definitely felt some pain when I rubbed down the outer part of my right thigh/quad as compared to no pain on my left.  The active release therapy talked about the manipulation of that area (above and below the knee). Although, I didn't feel the discomfort on the calf like I did on the quad.

The Most Common Causes of ITBS

  1. Leg length differences
  2. Road camber - running on a slope for a long time
  3. Foot structure
  4. Excessive shoe breakdown - particularly it the outside of the heel
  5. Training intensity errors - increasing mileage or intensity too fast
  6. Muscle imbalances - particularly quads versus hamstrings
  7. Run/gait style factors - e.g. bow-leggedness, knock knees, etc.

Thanks to the positive recommendations by Kim on of the use of KT tape... here is a link I found for its use with ITBS.

Thanks Justin!  I know I at least have the ones in red in addition to not stretching enough before running which I have read can also be a factor.  My right leg is nearly .5 longer than my left, you can actually see the difference when I wear pants - I have some scholiosis as well not to mention my right knee (not my affected knee) has been dislocated several times.  I first had ITBS issues a year ago when I started running and that was on my right side.  At that time I took some time off, 2-3 weeks I think and then I would only run for short times and stop either before it started hurting or as soon as I felt a twitch.  I have hope because my right ITBS doesn't bother me at all anymore (knocking on wood).

It doesn't bother me on the bike at all either though I have had it bother me after swimming before but that may have been because it was already irritated.  It does bother me on the treadmill the same as running outside and it even bugs me on the eliptical.

So the tape is for after the several weeks of rest when you decide to run again?  Or are you going to give it a shot with the tape and see how it feels?  Where do we get the KT tape in our area?  It's something I would definitely try when I am ready to ease back in.

Not sure on the KT tape yet... will look into that.
It will be for March and beyond...

I am not a fan of stretching before running... not static stretching anyway.  Dynamic stretches and warm-up run/strides yes... then do limited static stretches before race after warm-up.  Static stretching before a performance run ~ research indicates that it can decrease performance.  I focus my static stretching on post workout and hold stretches for 45-60 seconds... not to the point of pain, but light tension (noticiable - discomfort).

I used to hardly ever stretch, now I am stretching more often and I think it has helped.  My ITBS began bothering me during the later stages of the Ironman... and has been lingering ever since.  It did not help the cause when I ran 13.34 miles on Jan 1 and then the 13.1 on the 18th. (without having that good slow build back up to that distance).  My shoes may have had an effect too.  I rotate shoes, but I may have gone past the milage I should have.

I hate to agree but I know you are faster than this.  When was the last time you ran a 5K ...2003?  I bet you had better splits than 7:33 pace on a tri sprint run.
