Since this is really my first year to do tris, I don't taper at all on purpose.  I just don't work out the day before a race and if I miss a workout during the week due to work, family or school, I don't try to make it up, I just scrap it.  That being said, if I get my stuff together enough to tackle the Oly at the end of the season, then I will probably try to do an official taper of some sort.

Good luck at Onionman, Roni, the name of the race alone sounds like lots of fun

Doug, you are super fast!  19 minutes is crazy fast, I thought you said running was not your strength!

Suzy, I'm pretty sure it is a 5k or 3.11 miles to be more exact, that's what I did, anyhow.

Tracy, happy anniversary...AND, that's a pretty nice 400 yd time there!  Should we all enlist Linda to give us a swim clinic, though??? omg

Today I did a brick workout at the gym...90 minutes on a spin bike outside on the patio overlooking Waikiki surf (I started at 5:30am and there were already lots of surfers out there), then a 30 minute run on the treadmill.  I was drenched when I finished! I have forgotten that dead leg feeling after biking!  Good to start doing the bricks as my race is actually less than 8 weeks away!!! yikes, that is scary...

Roni--Kick some A$$ tomorrow.  I don't care about the onion shirt,  just want to see the pics of your team shirt!

Kim...nice job there.  That must be very cool swimming in such clear water.  At last weeks race you couldn't see your arm let alone your hand.  And the bottom at the start was all geese and duck crap so be the time people were done warming up it was all stirred up.  Canadian Geese....HA, even their geese screw with us.  Have a safe trip back to SF.  Twain was dead on right..."The coldest place I've ever been in SF in the summer".... but man I love that city!

Doug... AWESOME RUN.  Damn you fly! Have a great trip and be sure to post some pics of those German women with huge hooters serving you beer.  What... like none of you other guys in this group were thinking about that?

And finally.... to my dear mentor group.  What would one of my rides be without the comedy of errors....check out my log from today if you get bored and want to laugh.

forgot...My taper, whatever plan I'm on I'll follow.  That may change though with the half as I need more saddle time.  Man Doug, you are fast!

John  - thanks for keeping me entertained!

Team Shi - just finished my 400 - 6:49  -  While it's not as fast as some, I am pretty fired up about it since two months ago, I was doing good to finish 100 yd with out a break!

So I went out and got a bunch of stuff for my bike. Including a dual bottle holder for behind the seat, a bottle for between the areo bars, biking shorts, socks etc. Now all I need is a new bike to put it all on   Probably not this year though My wife never even blinked an eye at how much I spent today so I better not push it. Built a platform for the solar heater for the pool toady and got a new gaxebo so she is pretty happy. As long as she is happy I am happy.

You would be surprised how much better your tri's will  be is you follow a proper taper. It let's your body recover from full training so that it is at it's peak to perform for a race.

Gee Kim I feal so sorry for you that you were drenched after your workout in Waikiki.

I have my first tri of the season in two weeks. A super sprint then an Olympic 3 weeks after that.

Andy - SUPER job on the swim!!!!!!  GO TEAM FOUR!

Me: Well, if I was a horse, they'd put me down. Calfs (calves - sp?) are so sore I can barely walk. Not shin splints - actually muscles right above ankle bone,  and directly up about 6 inches into lower leg.  Started hurting a couple weeks ago and figured I'd just work through it . Doc said stay off them until I see him on Tuesday morning. I said "do not comprehend".  Seriously, looks like I'll be working on bike and swim this weekend which is a bummer because I really need work on the run.

Enjoy the long weekend everyone - it's beautiful here in Washington - hopes it's as nice wherever you are!

Sorry to cut this short, but it is night night time... This experience here at Zion has been UNREAL!  I am a very lucky person to experience this!!!  I had a breathtaking trail run today, and am looking forward to an even nicer one tomorrow...

Just so you all know... Onionman (that Roni is doing) is rated as one of the toughest Olympic Distance's Race's in Washington!  She is a rockstar!

John your stories amaze me!!! I also laughed out loud!!

Shannon, that doesn't sound good.  Have you been stretching regularly.  If I don't roll my calves on either the foam roller or with my "stick", they will tighten up and have in the past caused plantar fasciitis.  Good call by the doctor, but if you don't already have orthotics for your running shoes, you might want to ask your doctor about them.  I know people probably tell you all of the time how lucky you are to live here...but my goodness, you are SO lucky to live here!!!

Good luck and take it easy until you see the doc.

Hi! Hope everyone is having a good weekend! Thanks sooo much for all the well wishes!

I just got back from the Onion Man. Overall it was a pretty good day. I learned alot, and got my first tri of the season finished. My time was 3:28:31, which is alot slower than my last Olympic, but the course was also tougher. I felt pretty good on the swim and bike, but the run was brutal. The temps were in the 80's, no shade, and the first 1.5 miles was on uneven dirt trail. The trail running tightened up my achilles, and I ended up walking lots. Got it done though, and hopefully they bounce back quickly, because I still have training to do for Boise. I'll post the RR when I get it done. Thanks again! You guys are awesome! I thought of you lots on the course today!

As for tapers: Normally I follow a training plan for my "A" race, which has a built in taper for that race. Any other races I do before that race, I consider training races and don't taper, but do atleast try to have an easy day the day before. I know I really notice a difference in my performance when I have a full taper, but can't do it for every race or I'd always be tapering, because I love to race. So I try to pick one or two "A" races a season that I want to be in top form for, train and taper for them and just try to have fun and learn something from the others.

Kim: Running was definitely NOT my strong suit. However, I have spent the last 12 months slowly and gradually working at this. Although not in my training logs, I have worked my way up to an average of 40 miles a week. Over the winter I used treadmills 6 days a week. I ran 40 minutes on Mondays, 45 on tuesday, 50 on wed. 55 on thurs, 60 on fri., and 90 on saturday. Most of these were set up as inverse splits so that I learned to run faster in the second half. The long saturday runs were torture. I fell once on a saturday run and skinned my knees. I am sure my face was a red.

I will not be able to maintain that pace during a tri this year. I did it in controled conditions and did NOT swim and ride before it. Maybe next year I can approach something like that in an actual Sprint.

Now I NEED to improve my swim and round my biking into form.

Bear in mind  that unlike most members here I have yet to complete my first tri. My hat is off to all of you that have already done this. 12 days until my first! I am in Munich now and I am still sore from my run. I will rie an exercise bike tonight and run tomorrow for an hour.

Roni--WAY TO GO!  Looks like you got the job done in some very tough conditions.  Let's hope your next one is cooler and without a trail to run on for the first mile!

Today is my last day in paradise.  We are heading home in the Memorial Day traffic which is usually awful .  Hoping for one more OWS before we leave.  Enjoy your last little bit of the long weekend!
