Barry I read everything that everyone said here and have a couple things.... Bike fitting relies a lot on size of bike, size of person, and what you are trying to accomplish.... However it has been my experience on all of my bike fits that the FIRST thing they do is take my flexibility measurements before the put me on a bike.   I HIGHLY recommend you spend the money for a fit.  This is the first time riding aero specific... Get it done right.  As you drop weight this will change things, as you become more flexible this will change things, but until you are comfortable you are running the risk of injury!!

Lastly you passed over it, but I want to emphasize this.... You said that you have not cut your stem yet?!  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't do this.  Once you don't this you cannot change it.  Let a bike fitter take care of everything.  Be patient.  It is a different ride, riding in aero.  I shouldn't feel like a dream the 1st time.  Your legs will hurt in different spots, your crotch will hurt in odd places, your neck will be sore... Think of your time vs. $$$ spent.  Think of injury vs. $$$ spent?!  GO GET FITTED!

Our shop has Retul.  It's pretty nice, it can take a lot of measurements and spit out a nice form for you.  Though it's just a tool to use, if the person using it doesn't know how to fit properly it won't do you any good.

Hi, all!!

Watched the 49ers crush Seattle at the Portland airport today.  Was a bit outnumbered!

Spent the weekend in Portland for a family wedding, and had a blast.  Ran outside in that rain, however, and can't begin to imagine how those of you that LIVE in those climates do it.  Hats off to you all.......

VO2 testing.... Talk to me about it?  Worth it?   If you haven't done it and want to, how much would you pay to where it is a no brainer?  If you haven't ever gotten you VO2 tested before---WHY NOT?

Does VO2 testing have anything to do with a bike fit? Or a retul type fit?

he's asking if about VO2 during a retul fit.  a retul fit in and of itself may not offer the caliber of testing standards one is looking to achieve in a standard testing protocol, such as a retul fit.

Our coach did our V02 testing, it's what he used to generate our HR zones which we use for training.

It's a pretty simple test for run, you get on a treadmill and they put a mask over your mouth and nose, then the speed/incline is increased until you can't run anymore.  Bike is the same thing but on a trainer.

Sam had it done before we got our coach so she might know how much it cost on it's own.

Seems like a good way to get closer to correct HR zones.

Sam and I finished the Blue/Gray half marathon yesterday.

Seemed to me to be the hilliest race I have ever done.  I need to load my route into the garmin web site to get better elevation numbers but we seemed to be running up hill most of the time.

Definitely a different experience running on legs that are in the middle of training vs. the end of training.  We didn't push the pace at all but still felt like I was working a bit.

Not too bad, 35 bucks for half marathon, got a tech shirt, coin, and at the end they had free beer, pizza, beans and rice and Crispy Creeme donuts.  Which people seemed to be grabbing 3 at a time which would kind of defeat the purpose of the run itself I think...

I think it can be a valuable tool.  You can dial in your HR zones and then train better by staying in the proper zone for the workout.  That way you know if you are working hard enough or trying to work too hard.  Z2 workouts are just as important if not more important than Z4 workouts for creating an endurance machine out of your body.  And I have found that RPE can be way different than your actual HR.

Another great use for the VO2 test is that it spits out how many calories (fat and carb calories) you are burning at your given HR during exercise.  So combined with the RMR test I had done, I have been able to dial in my eating (ie. caloric in/out take).  It has helped me lose weight and more importantly body fat.  I know exactly how many calories I burn on the bike and run.  Then I can add those numbers to my RMR to know how many calories I need for the day.  It tends to me much lower than you think.

I caught her when she was still young and dumb!

And yes I agree, the weather up here sucks right now!  Virtually impossible to run outside due to the cold and layers of ice.  I HATE THE TREADMILL!!!

My wife and I have had the VO2 test twice.  It was $100 at our gym (Lifetime Fitness).  I think that is pretty high, but the value gained helps me justify it.  We had the second one done about a year or so after the first.  It was nice to see the progress of our fitness.  It definitely helps us understand how we need to train.  I am a data geek and like the HR data to help me with my workouts.

A no-brainer price for me would be somewhere under $50.  Going above that mark raises the budget radar for us on something that is a nice to have vs. a necessity.
