I'm coming down from Leavenworth (the fort not the Prison) for the ride. I'm planning on riding and then running Sunday. Is anyone meeting up before hand?

Don't know of any plans to meet up before, but there was talk on the facebook group about meeting up after the race (Sunday) for food and beers, but I never heard a final word on that.

Garmin Link

Things to note:

The start time is a little later than 1:30.....logistic issues.

Was in a rush trying to get on the course with the late arrival and forgot to hit the start button till we hit the toll booth. So the numbers in the link are ~2 miles short.

That means the ride was 59 miles and change (consistent with the bike computer on my riding partner's bike).

Garmin said 3,800 feet of climbing. Yeah it is Garmin, but I've found my elevation to be fairly accurate when it is run through the Gravity service on Motionbased.

The big gap between total time and moving time is mostly due to the 2 flats. Glass on the way out on the dam and a nasty nail/staple at about 30 miles. Thanks again to Jeremy for bike holding, tube and CO2 lending, waiting and not making fun of my tube changing skills.

Quite possibly, if you look at the map from the workout, we rode all the way past the water tower and turned around at N300Rd/56HW. That will teach us to show up late. The flat tires didn't help either, every time we'd catch the back of the pack it was time to change another tube.

If I can get up early enough, I'll see everyone running the half mary tomorrow morning.

Does your GPS have a barometric altimeter? I noticed that you used the MB Gravity Web Service.

Recommended

Gravity is recommended for people using GPS units without barometric altimeters. For people with the Edge 305 Gravity is Not Recommendedsince the elevation on the device is more accurate.

From what I've heard, Delorme's Topo USA is the most accurate for reporting elevation gain, but I don't want to spend $80-$100 just to find out.

Thanks for the info. I've seen that too, but without using Gravity, the 305 will tell me that the same spot on my driveway rose 220 feet while I was out running and I climbed 1300 feet on the same course it told me was 600 feet of elevation increase the week before.

With Gravity the start/finish elevation is within 2 feet and the consistency from one week to the next is within 50 feet. So I leave it enabled in Motionbased, it might still be garbage, but it is more believable/consistent garbage.

Kinda what I do, just using the BT route tool. Is that about the same amount of climbing as the old course?

Ryan,

I didn’t get to talk to you this weekend but thanks for a great ride opportunity. The course is challenging for this Nebraska flatlander but I really did enjoy it. I have reserved three campsites, who do I need to contact to make sure that they are together?

Thanks.

What an AWESOME weekend! Thanks again to Ryan and crew for setting this up. And for keeping the rain away - nice touch

Ryan just a mental note for ya'll for next year - it would be nice if the route was marked, especially since you told us it was! I know I am responsible for myself and should know a course before riding it, etc. But just wanted to let you know every single person I rode in with at the end had no idea if we'd taken a wrong turn or were on the right roads. Even the ones with maps. I know it was marked last year, so was suprprised to not see any signs on Saturday. Either way, we all made it (I think?) and had a BLAST!!!!

Also another note... there were no safety pins in the 1/2 mary bib packets. No biggie on that, just an observation. And I know you're not in charge but another observation was the severly short course at the KS Half Marathon. Every mile marker was off, and by mile 10 (according to Garmin) it was more than 1/2 mile off. Made up a little at the end, but I only registered 12.8 miles. Again I am not personally worried since it was a training day for me, but if someone was thinking they PR'd on that course I bet they'd be disappointed to learn it was significantly short.

Last - there was a lady who came by from the charity associated with the KS Half Marathon. SHe gave me an envelope for a donation and it did not make it home with me. Can you post the charity and address I can send a donation to?

Anyway. Again, what an awesome weekend! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

Lisa,
Thanks for coming up for a BIG weekend. I am resting up before I head to St.Anthony's tomorrow.

Yep, the course was short by .014 yesterday...and we knew it. Our adjustable out and back portion had a mud run-off so we cut it off. I figured that athletes would rather have a slightly (not severely... short course rather then running with mud on their shoes for 13.1.

I really appreciate you noting the charity behind the KS Half Marathon. They are the ones who really allowed the IMKS folks to race for free on Sunday. I asked them if we could do it as a way to broaden the demographic of the race and they obliged...but ultimately it was money out of their pocket. The beneficiary of the race was Health Care Access. They provide health services to the uninsured in Douglas County...they are fabulous people and do amazing things.

People like you make what I do worth it...not the ones who came up to me after the race wanting Free extra t shirts and goodies for a charity event that they did not even pay for. OK rant over! ...but I could tell stories of athlete behavior that is amazing...that behavior is not patented to athletes though...unfortunately it is everywhere.

I hope to be able to do the training weekend again next year...it was fun for all.

Health Care Access info is:

To continue on with an above post, I would strongly encourage that EVERYONE, who was comp'd into the 1/2 marathon at the training ride make a donation to Healtcare Access.  A very generous offer by Mr. Robinson to allow all of us to race for free, but the bottom line is that this race greatly benefits a great organization in Lawrence/Douglas County.  If you go to their website, you can make donations via paypal.

Well, I looked at the elevation maps of the bike course and it seems relatively flat, as the scale is only 400 ft and the largest hill is 200 ft.  I can't wait to get on it.  Run course is really flat.  I'll be able to PR on that seeing as I have never ran a half mary in a race.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing- where's the red font?

I have a friend who just did Wildflower, who is convinced that the KS bike profile looks like it has a 'few rollers'....um, sure...just a few...times 10.

Yeah, I have ridden the roads numerous times and it is not flat.  There are definately some sections that will test you.  I guess a lot just depends on where you normally ride and what you call hilly.  For us in the midwest it is a hilly course.  For those from Florida it is a mountain course and for those from Colorado it is a flat course.

I'm from Colorado and it looks pretty hilly to me!  Surely the comments from xcrunner2010 are meant to be funny.  "OMG ... the swim looks flat" is hilarious!

Yup, except even those from Colorado say it's a hilly course.
Some perspective from the other weekend - this is the actual course, just one of the hill progressions.

Ok,  I went and rode the course yesterday.  Couple of things, it was super windy and chilly (around 50 degrees but 42 with windchill).  The start of the course will be tough, since the first mile is basically up hill.  I would say the first 45 miles will be tough and then you get down into a "flat" section before you come back to the dam hill (pun intended), climb that hill and then you are back onto the dam (which after 50+ miles seems to take FOREVER!! to get across).  THen a climb up to the park entrance and then the rollers through the park till you have the downhill to the finish.

The main theme of this ride is to not blow yourself up on the first 40 miles. . otherwise you will pay.

Again, just my 2 cents, take it for what it is worth.

Yeah, it is not Redman flat that is for sure.  It will be a difficult course. . . no doubt about that.  Throw in the wind, which is a strong possibility and it could be a long ride. . .

For those that have done CDA, the hills are about as steep, but not as long as CDA.  Just for reference.
