Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Anyone out there do both CDA and Lake Stevens and be willing to offer up a comparison. They're at similar latitudes, so I would expect the conditions to be similar. I'm just wondering about the hills. I did Lake Stevens and have the CDA video for the CompuTrainer, but would be interesting in hearing from a veteran of both races. Thanks! -Mike |

Thanks! -Mike Doing Lake Stevens route two times is very comparable to CDA. The two main differences are: The towns folk cheer you on at CDA and the locals don't try and run you off the road; it's like they actually want you there! |

Veteran 185 Spokane | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Come on IM CDA peeps - where is all of the chatter and excitement. I've checked a few times in the last few days, to see if anyone was talking in here - with no results . So - I figured I'd ask everyone some questions, that all of us like to tell our uninterested friends (I'm interested however). What bike are you training on, racing on? What shoes do you train in? What shoes are you going to race in? What is your goal peak weekly mileage for swim/bike/run (each)? Umm...anything else interesting and fun you'd like to share? Ok...those are the fun things for now. Lets get this discussion board going. Oh....I'll answer the questions I just asked: Bike = P2C Training shoes = asics 2140 Racing shoes = ds trainer or nike zoom elite...havn't decided yet Goal mileage = swim - don't know, I usually measure based on days/time (4d/1hr) bike = 300 run = 65 Those are about 10-15% higher then what I did lastyear, so we'll see. What about you cats? |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Cool addition to the thread - thanks! Train on a Specialized Tarmac (and CompuTrainer), race on an S-Works Transition w/Bontrager 9.0 wheels. Train in Asics Nimbus / Cumulus (neutral), considering racing in my Zoot Advantage flats w/o socks, but will most likely wear the Nimbus (w/socks) on race day. Haven't really thought about the goal weekly mileage for the swim. Will probably do open water 1 or 2 mi. on Mondays and Fridays and work the pool once a week, so maybe 3-6 mi.? On the CompuTrainer in the eves through the winter for intervals and tempo work *sigh* and will try to get in long rides (50-100+) on Saturdays, with brick run option, depending on mileage - and mood :P I'm racing Carlsbad in Jan and Boston in April, so I'll be focusing on run training - most likely somewhere between 50-60. Ints, tempo and long runs, with some easy / brick work as well. Also have Oceanside on the schedule in late March and thinking about another tuneup 70.3 3-4 weeks out. Seriously considering Honu, but it's a lot of money (and travel) with both Boston and CDA on the books! Thought you also asked about our cats and I was thinking, "my cat ain't racing, she's fine." But now I get it haha! |

Veteran 185 Spokane | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Mike - that is awesome. I'm totally jealous about the computrainer, wish I had one. Instead, I have to envision the course in my head and adjust my resistance ...thats ok. Sounds like you have some good races on the docket. I would like to find a 1/2IM about a month out as well - we will see. What is your goal time for IM CDA? |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Well, you've got the course experience, which will be much more valuable than any virtual training I can do to prepare. I'm shooting for something like 1:10 + 3 + 5:30 + 2 + 3:45 = 10:30, but I really don't know what to expect on the marathon. Right now that's just an absolute guess. At least we still have more than 6 months to train (or stress?) and if training goes very well, I could do better. Of course, I could very well blow up all over the place and my time could be considerably worse. If doubling half-IM times and adding an hour are a good rule of thumb, then I might expect to be more like 11+ hours, so I guess we'll see. What are you shooting for? Looks like perhaps a sub-10 qualifier? |

Tampa, FL | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I will be training and racing on my P3. I was running 1080 wheels on front and back but just bought a 404 to put up front. The crosswinds cause too much problem with the 1080 up front. I raced CDA in 2008 and with those winds on the last loop I had a hard time keeping it on the road. Generally do long runs in Asics Nimbus but have started using Bandito or SpeedStar for speed work and racing. Right now I am wearing a big black "Boot" on my right foot as I tore my plantar fascia in a race a couple weeks ago. So I might need to reconsider the shoes. Weakly peaks: I would like to swim between 10,000 12,000 yards, would love to go over 300 miles on bike (just need the time) and run around 50 to 55 miles. Thanks for the questions! triseattle - 2009-11-05 12:09 AM Come on IM CDA peeps - where is all of the chatter and excitement. Champion 4942 Richmond, VA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread well, I guess I belong in this thread... In for 2010.
Enjoying my off-season, but actual training shall commence shortly. Figure I need to work-out my lodging issues. Housing lodging need another party for a rental rate? Plus, as for a house rental - wonder if renting a house near the course (and paying for a whole week) would be easier even if I'm only using it for the 4 or 5 days I'll be in town. My thinking is that I'm spending how time and effort to get here, short-sighted to mess myself up b/c I'm staying in a Motel 6 45 minutes outside of town...

Veteran 185 Spokane | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I like your gear Scott. I also ride the P2C ultegra get up, as well as the 2140's to run in (already mentioned above). I am jealous of gear mentioned around here though - I'm a poor college kid and can't afford those 404's like I'd want to. Anyone got a pair laying around . Keep up the good work. I live in Colorado now, but am originally from Spokane, WA (30 minutes west of CDA) so, I am familiar with your new house location - awesome! |

Veteran 229 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I'll be riding a Trek and running in Brooks. I know better then to set times since I tried that twice. I will say that if there's one goal I have for this one it's to run the whole marathon. An article on Active.com about hill climbing opened my eyes to why my legs failed me in the past and I hope to apply it this time around to help me run. |

Plan to ride old school on Bianchi SS (cira 1982) and will most likely run in Newtons (my Vibram Five Fingers aren't going to cut it). Hoping to raise a good chunk of change for a local charity. Room reserved at the Holiday Inn or Express. |

New user 41 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread First IM next June at IMCDA! Pumped. Working on getting a house for me and some other buddies who are flying in from both coasts to do this thing. Racing in Avia Bolts probably. Train in Avia Lite Guides. Riding a Trek Equinox 7. Wish I had the dough to go get a real chariott. Any suggestions from peeps on how to train for the bike hills of IMCDA when I live in the flattest part of the USA - midwest farmlands of Ohio! Thanks and looking forward to 32 weeks 4 days when we toe the line. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I have a Felt S22, kind of entry level. I train in and race in the Asics 2140, considering maybe changing to Brooks, not sure atm, have to wear out my current 3 pair first. This is my second IM, first was Vineman and I finished in 12:16. So I hope to finish in 11:xx:xx in CDA. I am not sure what my training distances will be, that kind of depends on what my body can tollerate. Anything like 3000 miles biked, 1000 miles run and 250,000 yards swam in the 10 months prior to the race is ballpark. Currently I am run focused with a 30k trail run last month, a 30k trail run next week and a marathon in January. After recovering from the marathin I will start building back up in bike and swim. I am slow at swim and bike, run is ok. So like 1:20:00 swim, 6:25:00 bike, 4:00:00 run or whatever. It is a long road between here and there, so we shall see what will be. So how much elevation is there on the CDA bike course? I haven't looked at the course recently. |

Veteran 185 Spokane | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Baowolf - Sounds good. I think you'll do just fine in CDA by the sounds of what you've done before and what you have on your race schedule between now and then. Most people would probably say that the CDA course is pretty hilly - but I don't think it is terribly bad. I would definitely suggest being comfortable with a few short steep climbs, and a few long 4-5%ish grade climbs. I think the reason CDA seemed hilly was because you have to do two loops . Anyhow, you'll do great, I'm looking forward to the race again and cutting my time down. I finished in 12:47 this lastyear, but have goals to get it down to 11 hours or better, because of some mistakes/problems I had. So, hopefully we will finish side by side! Why are you wanting to switch to Brooks? Have you tried a Brooks shoe before? Just curious - I consider myself a shoe "expert"...so, always wondering. Take care - keep us updated on your races. |

Regular 56 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I'll be racing my first IM with Combat Bobby! aka rwspath. I'll be riding a 2006 Cervelo Soloist with clip ons. I'll race with the 2010 Addias marathon shoe (forget the name) and train on Saucony Pro-grid. I've got a set of Zipp 303s with only 150 miles on them but I think I'd like to upgrade to a 404 / 808 combo. However, hearing about the winds maybe I'll just keep the 303s. I am planning to start building the base now and more focused workouts at the start of the new year. I'll be racing IM CA 70.3 in March, running the Boston Marathon in April, Elephant Rock Century + , hopefully a tune up Sprint or OLY before IMCDA. I know too much to set a goal time for such a crazy long event. |

Do you have an indoor trainer? If so, do low cadence grinds to prep for the hills. My part of the world is pretty darn flat as well and I did IM CDA in 2008. The hills are not too bad but they do seem to just keep coming- especially on that second loop. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread My typical long bike ride has about 4000 feet of elevation gain, out and back with a steap uphill on one side and a rolling long drawn out uphill coming back up the far side. I can do a meaner route, but that road is the only hilly ride with any shoulder at all on the side to bike on. The meanest route near where I live has a 5 percent grade for like 10 miles up, then down the back side then back up again. It isn't the Rockies, but that constant grade drains the begibies out of me. My bigest area to improve is on the bike, that is why I am run focused... er well hrm... maybe there are just more running races in the winter than there are bike races or tri's. I am ambivalent about the asics 2140's. They are a little heavier than the equivalent shoe in Brooks and the Brook's trail shoe looks alright. I haven't decided yet for sure. I hate getting nailed on the ball of my left foot with a rock though, man it travels right through the shoe like nothing is there to stop it. Shrug will have to think about it in about 750 miles when I run out of shoes. I have heard of folks raising the front wheel while on the trainer in addition to increasing the tension and going in a bigger gear at lower cadence. Edited by Baowolf 2009-11-12 6:31 PM |
