found this triathlon calculator web page, plugged in fitness from last year and it was almost spot on predicting my first IM time.  thought some of you might be interested in seeing what it predicts for your race....

http://www.qt2systems.com/triathlon-calculator/

My results seemed a bit odd.  Overall est finish for me was 13:54, which is not far from traditional 'HIM time + 1hr' estiimate.  But the splits were weird.  The swim is prob ballpark (for quiet OWS-no wind/chop/current), but run was optimistic & bike was silly slow.  Est bike split was 7:18 with ave speed 15.3mph.  I did a sub-6hr century a few weeks ago at low effort (Z1 ave HR), and that was on a road bike.  My typical low effort (low Z2 HR) cruise on my tri bike is 19-20mph on the flats. scale that effort back a bit for IM & I was still thinking ~6:30 spilt (17.2mph).

The algorithm for the calculator takes into account training volume. Two triathletes with same pace will get different results, based on amount of training in the respective sport, up to a certain "critical volume." In other words, generally higher volume = faster overall time and lower volume = slower overall time, holding pace constant.

If you enter in your data correctly and you are able execute your race properly, you'll be amazed how accurate this calculator is.  I've been using it for a couple years for my athletes and have been very impressed with its accuracy.  They key is proper pacing and it doesn't calculate people going to hard on the swim + bike and blowing up on the run.  Smile

Coach I hear ya about overcooking the swim/bike hurting run leg.  I've made that mistake in an Oly, and (to lesser degree) in HIM last summer (19.5mph bike).  B2B will be my 1st IM & I was planning to pace bike leg at low Z2 HR effort (~17.5mph).  Are you saying that is too hard for IM bike leg?  (All this assumes proper hydration/nutrition of course)

Hey Jonathan,

Definitely wasn't trying to call you or anyone out specifically for not saving enough for the run.  I was just more making the reference of the importance of saving enough for the run.  However, if you look at the results from most Ironmans, you'll see so many people that do slower marathons than they're capable of.  I will not say z2 is the right pace for you because I don't know nearly enough about you to approve something like that.  With that said, that zone is typically the right zone for people to be in during an IM bike.  However, I would highly recommend you do not measure your effort level by speed.  I know the course is super flat, but there are other variables like the wind that factor into your speed.

Colin-

Thanks for your thoughts.  Clearly speed alone is a poor measure to pace from since wind/weather/etc can have have huge impact. Gotta decide on effort (or power if you have that) & let speed on race day take care of itself.

I am not a coach but having a pre-set speed is the perfect way to mess up a race (IMHO). As u said, race Z2 and live with that!

For anyone who has done B2B in the past, I did IMKY last year and am looking to do a non-M dot branded race for 2012 and I have a couple of questions:1) how does it compare to the course of IMKY?2) how Is the temperature? Does it get cold, it is the end of October.3) how is race support?4) bonus question- has anyone down the great Floridian and B2B and how do they compare?Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Amymengle on BT has done all three races, so look her up.

Since your from Georgia, yeah it may be cold.  I thought the temps were great.  I like it cool!

I haven't done Floridian but heard it's way hillier then one would expect.  The ride at B2B has an occasional bridge over the intercoastal waterway otherwise it's pretty flat with an occasional false flat.  We had headwinds for the long leg all the way back to Wilmington in 2009.

B2B run has some pesky bridges and a couple of steep, but short hills in downtown, and a slight rise heading out near the park area.  I was expecting pancake flat and found it a bit hillier then expected.  Not sure on Floridian.

My only complaint in 2009 was that the aid stations ran out of Coke on the run aid stations and I was really enjoying my Coke and pretzels.  That was on my second loop and aprox miles 17-24 and I finished in 12 hours.  Heed is nasty stuff and I was forced to drink it on occasion due to this issue.  Otherwise there was plenty of support.

Not that I'm in the planning mode after being injured most of the year, but looking at tide charts for 2012 my guess is that B2B will be on Nov 3.  The date always changes due to the tides.

Question about if I need to rent a car or if everything is in walking distance. I will be flying down Wed. night and flying home Sun. I plan on shipping my bike down to Bike Cycles and have them ship it back to me. Not sure how far everything is from each other.  I will be staying at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside.

How far is T1 from the Hilton?  I plan on taking the bus the morning of the race to the swim start. Just not sure about getting my bike to T1 on Friday and getting to packet pick up.

I am doing the full.  Can not believe that it's 8 weeks away

Cab to the hotel and hotel to airport.  Airport isn't that far from downtown.

Packet pick up is real close to the Hilton, I was on the far side of downtown in a rental and walked it, not to mention we didn't realize there's a bus that makes a loop around downtown and is free.  There's info on Wilmington's downtown web site.

Your big issue is the bike, though you should have plenty of people to get a lift from since the Hilton will be loaded with racers and the bike shop is pretty close to T1.

I would think getting your bike from the Hilton after the race and back to the bike shop on Sunday before your departure will be the toughest, but maybe toss it in a cab hit the shop then the airport and head out of town.

Or maybe some fine BT'er with room will just help you out.   There's plenty of places to eat and drink in downtown Wilmington so no real need for a car to get around there.

The B2B site has cab company's listed maybe you can call them to get an idea on rates and do some mapquesting to get distances, etc.

I counsel renting a car.

I see that Bike Cycles is handling bike receiving and shipping for B2B. Will they pick bikes up after the race from the Battleship or do you have to bring the bike to their shop?

I think you're going to want a car unless you've got someone who's going to help you get around. Some things will be close to the Hilton like registration, athlete's dinner, T2/finish. Some things are in Wrightsville Beach; practice swim, T1/bike dropoff, etc.

Separately, it always surprises me how busy I stay the Friday before an IM..details and errands. Not having a car wouldn't make those last few hours before the gun goes off any easier.

Good luck with your training..

I did Louisville this year, B2B 2009 and GFT 3 times on slightly different bike courses each time. My thoughts for you:

Weather is about the same at GFT and IMKY- hot and humid. Wilmington weather can be pretty variable this time of year. I was cold in 2009 Around 40 on the beach start, and I wore tights and a windbreaker for the whole bike, but I am used to FL weather. It also got downright chilly at night - plan special needs accordingly.

The swim at B2B is salt water, current aided, wetsuit legal. But, if you dont like cold water it could be a little nippy - like mid to high 60s. GFT swim is similar to IMKY - you cant see yer hand in front of your face, but at least at GFT the race has been wetsuit legal every year but one. Bike course for the GFT and IMKY are surprisingly comparable, with lots of rollers to sap you quads. B2B is basically flat, but the wind can be problematic. The GFT run is flat like IMKY, but its pretty dull on the trail and around the lake. B2B has a couple of hills - you have to cross two bridges each lap and there is a nasty cobblestone hill up out of the downtown area as you transition to the park area. I would rank IMKY and GFT as equally difficult, with B2B slightly less challenging due to the flat bike.

All these races have tremendous support - there are reports of aid stations running out of stuff at each, but in general I found each outstanding. SetUp Events does a stellar job, and the race compares in every way to a branded race except its a little quieter at the finish. You will not be disappointed with either I think. As for me, even though live on the GFT course, I'm headed back to Wilmington.

Just my $0.02. Your view may vary. Hope that helps!

Training for B2B as 1st IM using Fink Intermediate Program. Unfortunately missed prescribed HIM race this week.  Instead did a HIM(+) brick yesterday---2k(pool)/62mi/15.2mi.  Tried to do anticipated IM pacing/fueling/hydration.  Was a bit light on fuel (only 1120cal in), but finished OK.

Just 5 more 15+hr weeks before taper.  Plan to get in a few OWS's soon.

Hope everyone's training is going well

Ft. Fisher area is up the road from Carolina Beach and there's a pretty nice aquarium that's part of it. From there you could take the ferry over to Southport, which is a cool coastal town.. http://www.pleasureislandnc.org/fortfisher.asp

There's the Battleship, of course..

You can rent kayaks on Wrightsville Beach and explore the marshes - bonus is you'll be on the swim course..no better way to get a bird's eye view. There's a rental place on the inlet side very close to the Blockade Runner Hotel.
