475 | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 I am way behind- I am only at 29,600 but had to take time off due to finding out I had STREP in my sinus cavities and they think it's been "growing" there for several months. Basically, have felt like I have mono only it's treatable with the CORRECT meds. I have been on 4 antibiotics, 2 rounds of prednisone, and 2 different nasal sprays. FINALLY figured out what was wrong- thankfully! I have gained weight from the swelling, had about 8 weeks of feeling generally sluggish, etc . BUT, still swimming and actually following an Olympic plan so on track for workouts just SLOW. I only missed about 2 weeks of swims. Regardless, back on track. I will put my two cents in on the lifting. I lift a lot in my off season but this year I just ran out of time. Did 10 weeks of 2 HARD lifting workouts per week that lasted about 70 minutes each. Finally gave those up about 3 weeks ago. Too much. I needed to start building for IM training. I love lifting and I do feel stronger and can run LONGER at a harder pace (at least I think I can). However, still firmly believe in getting in all of the workouts in my training plan and with 3 kids, PT job, kids' sports, busy spouse that also works out, cleaning, cooking, laundry, etc. it just doesn't make sense. Good for those of you that have time. If you don't have children enjoy that time if you ever plan on having them. Keep at it! Lifting is such a great thing! Core strength helps in all three disciplines as well. Hope everyone is doing well. I ran HARD for 9 miles today and finally felt like I enjoyed it!!! Can't wait to be 100% better! |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 First of the swim meets today. Wasn't sure how I'd do being sick the few days before, but felt past the worst of it. 200 free started ok, matching speed with another 2:15 seed in the next lane for about the first 75, but then lost it. Energy just gone and faded big time. Ended up with a 2:26. Chalking it up to still recovering, especially as that did not feel like a normal fade or later race burn. Dropped out of the 500 free because of that. Wasn't much point in swimming what would be a practice rep time. Had signed up for a 50 fly in between and went through with that. Felt fine technically, but not as fast as I'd like. Still ended up with a :33. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 That is a sweet time for the 50 fly! I think I am just a 100% slow-twitch animal. There is NO WAY I would be anywhere close to that time for the 50, but it's no problem for me to do 150 or 200m of fly at a slower pace. Ditto for distance swimming. It just feels natural. If it's just a continuous swim, I could probably keep going for hours at about a 1:50 pace. But when I sprint 100m, I feel like a penguin trying to run, or a turkey trying to fly. Guessing it could partly be my stroke or training, but it's the same for running--anything below 5000m just feels wrong! My team nickname in HS was the Energizer Bunny (since I could keep going and going at a steady pace like the rabbit in the battery ad)! Edited by Hot Runner 2014-02-22 11:06 PM |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Thanks! Now to keep it going to do some other distances. I know what you're saying with the flatter speed profile as well. I'm much flatter than most others I swim with. Maybe not like you, but it's certainly there compared to others around me. Fast 25's with generous rest and some more can keep up, other some pull away. But put in tighter repeat times and I tend to do relatively well with them. Especially when they get a little longer. 200's and I'll pull well away from the same guys later in the set. That's a reason why I do try to get shorter and faster stuff in there. I just don't know how to go faster, so I make sure to put that into the the workouts. And then try to hold form as best I can when doing the longer and/or tighter sets. Develop the speed and the ability to hold it. It's not really switching to a sprint dominant workout, but trying to put myself into situations where I'm swimming faster more often. Another viewpoint, at a previous meet, my times in the 100 and 200 were the same time off of what's needed for Worlds qualification. Some guys beat me in the 100 and I beat them in the 200. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Did 3050m for 54,100m total. No idea how that extra 50 had gotten into my totals. Must have miscounted something or had to leave when the lifeguard turned out the lights, or something. (He stays not a minute over the scheduled end of HS practice. If I start late, my big challenge is to finish my workout before lights out!) Just curious--how would we count OWS if we don't know the distance? Planning to spend a few days of spring break in March shopping/running/ swimming/eating in Singapore (Developed country R and R!--ridiculous but have to go as running out of Nuun, almonds, and my kitty's preferred canned treats, among other life essentials!), then head to Lang Co for first tri of the season. Hoping to get in a couple of OWS in Singapore but I don't know the exact distance. Usually I just swim continuously for 30-40 minutes. Just estimate based on 2 minutes/100m? (Pretty conservative in my case.) Or not count? Or I could try to estimate using Google Earth. (No swim Garmin.) Edited by Hot Runner 2014-02-24 7:01 AM |

Straight line from one point to the other. Not perfect, but close enough. Nature of the beast with open water. |

Looks like you're shaping up to have a monster season. I'm definitely getting there. My main set today was 11x100 and 8x25. I was around 1:17-1:19 for the 100's and 15-16s for all the 25's. Right now I'm focused on shorter, faster sets, and it seems to help. I'd rather have a 2,500 yd swim with FAST sets than a 3,500 swim that's more moderate in pace. Ever since I've been looking into this polarized training model that I posted about in this thread (http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=511487&posts=24&page=1), I've become a big believer in making my fast efforts really sharp. In short course, which is my focus this year, this philosophy is probably doubly important. For Nationals I need to be able to swim that 750 FAST if I want a shot at Worlds. |

Where does that put our beloved sweet spot? The PT model shats all over the sweet spot theory. I'm using the PT mindset in my running and swimming, but I'm using the Sufferfest Intermediate plan for my bike, which spends a lot of time in Zones 3 and 4. However it does spend the 20% at Z5+ that PT prescribes. From what I've seen in group rides, the Sufferfest plan is definitely helping my bike speed, so I'm going to keep following the plan through. My first race is March 15th, so I'll get a snapshot of where my training is taking me then. |

Did 350y as part of my warm-up today at 1:30 pace, so feeling like that <6:00 400y is probably there. Am planning on testing my 100 next week, but based on my repeat 50 and 100 speed, I'm hoping I'll be at or below goal. My endurance is definitely not there yet, so I'll be waiting for a few weeks to test that 1500;) |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 3200m for 57,300m. Things will get crazier next week as I'll miss at least one swim due to a class trip, and possibly another depending on how long a vet appt. takes. I am DONE with those "Four Weeks to a Faster 1500" workouts. (Eight weeks--I did each twice!) Guess I should do a 1500m time trial soon to see if it works as advertised. Will see how energy levels are Saturday PM (first tempo run since November, so not sure!). Otherwise it would be after work. In Vietnam, I'm never swimming at an ideal time--it's either after a 9-hour workday (with literally zero break--I finish coaching, strip down to swimsuit, and jump in the pool), or Saturday afternoon after my long run! There's no other time that the pool is available to staff. Main set today 20 X 100m--4 sets of 4 @ 1:50 and 1 @ 2:10 (stretch, drink of water). All in under 1:40. The last 5 were 1:35-1:36. This is common with me for some reason--it's often easier for me to go faster at the end of a workout. I've also done crazy-fast final miles of marathons and even my HIM when in shape. No idea why. Maybe mental--relief at almost being done? In this workout, I actually felt a bit bored until the last 5. I want to get to the place where it gets tough to hit the splits. (It did last time, but not this time.) Same with marathon and HIM--actually want the ugly stuff to start so I can deal with it. Just the way my mind and body work, I guess. I probably would not have the patience for full IM! It didn't feel that hard to hit the times, and I was able to hold good form and normal DPS throughout. But I know swimming the whole 1500 hard without any rest, however minimal, is a different animal--we shall see. It will feel good to get back to some faster stuff. I've been doing a little (the stroke/free 50's at the end of my workouts are sprints) but not much. Just not as concerned about speed for my first race as strength/endurance. It's a longer swim (1800m) and the water up there tends to be on the rough side. |
